Megan McAlorum was aged 16 years. She was brutally murdered by Thomas Purcell on 12th April 2004. The tariff (minimum sentence required to serve) in Northern Ireland for murder is 16 years. This further reduced for 'good behaviour' and time spent on remand.

After Purcell's sentence he could be given a new identity elsewhere in the country. He could even become your next door neighbour. He would be free to ruin another family's life once more through acts of violence. A police office said "We will be sitting with another family in 10-15 years time if Purcell is released".
