WHAT DOES A PREMIUM CABLE NETWORK SUCH AS HBO OR SHOWTIME HAVE TO GAIN BY ADOPTING FIREFLY?

There have been around 600,000 dvds of the Firefly dvd series sold to date in the US at a retail price of $50 a set. Assuming that a sixth of them already subscribe to the premium cable networks, that still leaves around a half a million people that would gladly subscribe to whichever premium network decides to revive firefly for a price cheaper per episode than what they paid for the dvd. When you consider how many of those 600,000 dvds were borrowed and viewed by friends and family who also became very interested in the series but simply didn't see any point in spending another $50 to purchase another dvd set when they already had easy access to one, as well as the number of fans that became dedicated fans of the shows but simply didn't want to spend $50 on a dvd set when they already viewed the series for free on Fox and could rewatch the episodes for free on the scifi channel, it's pretty easy to see why the actual number of new subscribers to the premium network might actually be closer to a million.

THIS IS ESSENCE GUARENTEES ATLEAST AN ADDITIONAL GROSS OF AROUND FIVE MILLION EACH MONTH TO WHICHEVER PREMIUM NETWORK DECIDES TO ADOPT FIREFLY from new subscribers in the US alone. And this isn't even considering the ADDITIONAL REVENUE that could be generate from DVD RELEASES of the new episodes, the newer fans that the show picks up due to additional exposure, and the number of newer subscribers to the network that could be picked up from FANS OVERSEAS. Indeed, Firefly's fanbase in Canada and Australia alone easily exceeds it's US counterpart when taken as a percantage of the population.

Another way to estimate the number of new subscribers is based on Serenity's box office gross. Serenity has thus far grossed 24.5 million domestically and another 12 million overseas. The average price of a movie ticket in 2004 was $6.21 in the US, according to the National Association of Theatre Owners. What this means is that there are 4 million people in the US alone that were willing to invest $6, two hours, and a drive to the movie theater because they were sufficently interested in the Serenity universe. Even if as many as a quarter of them went into the movie without knowing what it's about before hand and as many as 80% of the rest are either already subscribed to the premium networks or wouldn't be willing to spend $10 a month to watch another two to four hours of the Firefly universe monthly, it's not hard to see why the 500,000 new subscribers is actually a very conservative estimate.

WHAT MAKES FIREFLY SO SPECIAL?

As anyone who has seen an episode of Firefly can tell you. Firefly is undoubtedly one of the most brilliant television series ever created. How else could a television show which only aired for nine episodes, in the wrong order, aired on Friday night, was prempted by baseball, was given little to no marketing, and was pulled from the air so quickly, managed to draw in such a dedicated fan base that the dvds sales numbered among the highest of all time, a major feature film was produced, and the series is still, to this day, the highest rated television series on tv.com three years after the last episode was aired. There's a reason why the feature film based on the franchise has recieved very positive reviews from virtually every major publication, though it's still not nearly as brilliant as the television show. Furthermore, the brilliant characters and the rich universe that the franchise immerses you has so many possibilities for storylines since each new world that the crew manages to find themselves on can very plausibly be like no other world they've been on before. Each could have a wholly distinct ruling body, a very different set of rules and beliefs, and could each expose the audience to a wholly novel experience.

Now with the franchise at the peak of it's fame, with so many copies of the television series sold on dvd, millions more viewers that will be exposed to the franchise through the feature film both in theaters and via dvd rentals, and the multiple popular magazines that featured this franchise as their main story, the series is ripe to be brought back to life, and continued from the final episode that was produced, in part to fill in the gaps between the final episode and the feature film, and in part to continue the story pn from the conclusion of the film. A television network like HBO or Showtime that has the resources to produce the show as it was originally envisioned, and give it the marketing and multiple airings that it most certainly deserves is a perfect home for this franchise. And this petition is meant to get the attention of such a network in order to get this wonderful show back on the air.

A little about me... I'm the type of person that never ever watches the same episode more than once, and the the number of dvds that I own ranks in the single digits. But I've seen every episode of Firefly atleast three times, would gladly subscribe to any premium cable network that decides to revive Firefly eventhough I don't subscribe to any currently, and even took the time to spend many hours reading more about it at http://www.fireflyfans.net/ and do the research and make a petition about it online.

In addition, I've never been a fan of sci fi, I've never been a fan of westerns, and I've never been a big fan of any of Whedon's other shows either. Everyone that I've exposed to this show fits that description as well. So I'm quite confident when I say that this show crosses beyond any and all genres to draw in viewers of all types, because it truly is above and beyond anything else on television. The show is just soo damn addictive. The characters and plots are absolutely brilliant.

I support this petition. Fox has got to be crazy for cancelling this show. If it went back on air, there would already be AT LEAST 17k dedicated fans. The way TV is boring now, Firefly would explode on the channels.

I support this petition and can\'t believe Fox was silly enough not to see the potential in this show. I don\'t even watch regular TV or cable, but would swim the channel to watch these episodes.
