A great act of injustice has been committed in Ruamrudee International School. Tuesday 27 October 2009, teachers received envelopes containing a LETTER OF INTENT, asking whether or not they want to continue teaching in RIS. This letter is to be signed and submitted by this Friday the 30th of October. There were TWO other letters in the envelope, one of them stating the benefits and salary package that teachers are to receive SHOULD they decide to remain at RIS. Here's where the problem all begins. Some teachers discovered that they were being labeled as 'Locally-hired' or in other words ASIAN, even if most of them were NOT hired from within the country. They discovered in the bottom of the letter...that their BENEFITS were to be taken away from them.
These benefits include...

1.) Housing Allowance (20-25,000baht/month)
2.) Relocation Allowance
3.) Home leave
4.) incoming/outgoing airfare

Western teachers are categorized as EXPATRIATES. to qualify as an expat, according to the documents, a teacher MUST be A NATIVE SPEAKER OF THE SUBJECT TAUGHT. So the Chinese and Japanese teachers are considered expats. Yet some teachers hired from other countries in Asia are still deemed 'Local-hired'. 'EXPATRIATES' still have their benefits.... ALL of them.

Many of you, are Ruamrudee International School alumni and/or former students of:
- Mr. Jose Librodo
- Ms. Mars
- Ms. Mendy Bautista
- Ms. Hye-Sun Chung
- Ms. Aurora Phuttitarn
- Mr. Sebert de los Santos
- Mrs. Melinda Agana
and many other Asian teachers at RIS. You probably knew that these Asian teachers are the ones who:

1. CARED about your well being as a student, a friend and a family.
2. HELPED you whenever you have a problem whether it be a personal problem or school related problem.
3. are very, if not the most, INFLUENTIAL teachers who challenged you to achieve your maximum potential.
4. are always there for you.
5. are the reason you want to go back and visit RIS.
6. are almost always, VERY HONEST (especially Mr. Jose..) and would rarely lie to you for any reasons.
7. gave you the most special experience that you CAN"T NEVER EVER find anywhere else.
8. always SUPPORT you for whatever you choose to do.
9. BELIEVED strongly in you, sometimes even more than you believed in yourself.
10. TURN your world up-side-down with their talents!

This petition is created for all those who DISAGREE with this discriminatory action and WILL NOT TOLERATE any form of discrimination in RUAMRUDEE INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL but are living too far to sigh the written petition on Thursday 29 October 2009.

ANYONE who thinks racism has NO PLACE in a school community and have been silent for too long. Here is your chance to start crating a new community without discrimination!

Racism and sexism have held back communities for too long. Discrimination against Gatekeepers creates discrimination for all who pass through them; it creates racism and sexism in many indirect ways.

Everyone is on the same scale now. Funny thing is these long time Asian teachers eneded up losing A LOT more by asking to be treated like Western expats. Now they are off their \"secret\" scale and on the public one.

I support an end to racism and discrimination but your petition is unclear. Race and ethnicity aside, the benefits listed above are in line with standard hiring practices for any international organization. I graduated from RIS, I\'m Asian and some teachers listed were very kind to me but that is besides the point. It seems like some students are misinformed and perhaps some teachers want to consider themselves as not locally hired even though they\'ve settle in the Thailand permanently. I\'m not denying there are other forms of discrimination in RIS but if there\'s more information about this particular issue that I am not aware of, please pass it on. I\'ll gladly help organize former students to chime in. A few of us are discussing this and we\'re hesitant to sign on. Please do not mistake this as an attack on your good intentions. Contact me anytime.
