 Melbourne has long been heralded as the Sporting Capital of Australia. 10 AFL Teams, The Commonwealth Games, World Swimming Championships, two sudden-death World Cup Qualifiers and a British Lions Rugby Union match are just some of the events that this city has recently been given. All sporting organizations in Victoria have competent and profitable boards, accomplished coaches and brilliant players. Yet in the World Game, which also happens to be the most played sport in Victoria, the one football team from this town has become an embarrassment to Victorians. The Football Club has been able to do what Rugby League has long envied- getting hardcore AFL supporters to come along to games. Devoted fans such as myself have followed the boys around, witnessing some astonishing performances as well as some disgraceful ones. In fact, many supporters from our diehard supporter groups travel all over Australia to support the boys. And the club has been around for one year! Yet it must be asked how long can this patience last? Even the most ignorant of football supporters would know that a team that takes 8 rounds to choose which goalkeeper will be it’s No.1 and stands by a useless striker can realize that there is something wrong with the brains trust. We've been getting sell-out crowds but will it last if Merrick continues to play his boring style of football, which, without goals, will fail to get the turnstiles ticking over in 2006-07. Currently, two teams from towns with populations of around 300,000 are ahead of us. Namely, they’re the Central Coast and Newcastle. The only real competitior to Victoria in the sporting capital stakes, Sydney, are second on the A-League table. Melbourne are seventh. In sport, the blame gets passed around in media circles. But all agree that the buck has to stop with coach Ernie Merrick.

We, the fans of Melbourne Victory Football Club, ask the chairman, Geoff Lord, and the Football Manager, Gary Cole, to bite the bullet and deliver what we have come to expect as trademark performances from Victorian teams in any sport. Efficient, exciting, and brutal in demoralizing opposition teams. The fans have delivered in every game this year, with all games having attendances between 11,000 and a capacity 18,500. The experiment of four Friday Night Games in a row paid off with fans (well, decently anyway), but Victory obtained just 1 point from those four games, without troubling the scorers. Who is to blame for our terrible form and ugly style of play, the type you’d expect to see in the terribly lob-sided Scottish competitions? Is it our star striker, Archie Thompson, for scoring 8 times in fifteen games? HELL NO! As I’ve said before the buck stops with Ernie Merrick, and he’s to blame for our poor performances. Do we want someone like him leading this club forward, or do we want a proven coach. Many say the A-League is a leap forward from the old NSL. Hell, if we’re talking in the coaching department, then we’re a fair way off the mark. Many better coaches from the NSL have been left unemployed due to Victory’s decision to employ this ignoramus. We’d hope an e-mail like the one below is delivered to Merrick’s computer.

I just want to got to a game and watch Victory play some nice football that I know is at a better standard than the one I'm playing at, like Queensland or Sydney does, who keep the ball on the deck, like all the good teams in the world do. If I can be taught to do this in a State 2 team then surely an A-league team should know better, but then again, the players are trying to follow the coach's lead, which is clearly mis-guided. If the long bomb works then use it, if it doesnt, the coach needs to have a brain to change the game either with smart substitutions or a complete change in tactics. Learn to pick the weakness in the opposition that complements the team's strengths, that's how you win games Merrick!! Get rid of Merrick or support for Victory will plummet!!

After our recent dismal home form I turned to my friend after seeing the 1,000th long ball sent forward by our defenders to their defenders and we both said "it has to be the manager instructing them to do this." I still think his treatment of Kitzy early on was appalling and showed that he had no idea when it came to spotting a matchwinner and the type of player that we need at the Victory (instead of some midielders that excel only in running at the opposition only to kick the ball at their shins hoping for a fortuitous rebound.

He is borring, he makes the wrong decitions during times when the victory r on top, has made the wrong desitions picking players for the team. Then there are players who should be sacked as well, 1. Andy Vlahos why u ask, well simple my grandmother can ran faster then him and she's dead, and 2. Allsop. pls people how dum is this player, why do u have a striker that is never forward and always in the midfield, and also doesn't run. What Melb Victory need is a coach that isn't scared to try new things, two new strickers prefer ones that run and have skill, two new midfield players again that run and have skill (Look into gettting some Korean or Jap players) and also have a captain that has brains and that he thinks of the team and not of himself.

We need a coach with good experience, along with an actual personality! The constant robotic droning of "I think we did well" at the end of each match really gets on your nerves, doesnt it!

So many games tried yet he still chooses Vlahos and Ferrante who between have directly assisted in just the one goal while players such as the afforementioned Tadrosse aswell as Kristian Sarkies, who has set up four times the amount a put in and out of the side. Now, while I've had to rely on the good people from SEN (aswell as intertstate streamed radio) to listen to the game because 1. I don't have much money. 2. I'm not willing to be at the Geelong Train Station at 11pm at night 3. My location and 4. I don't have Fox so haven't been able to see much of the games, from what I have seen, we aren't the title challenging side we should be. 6 games won, 4 of which were in a row, a goal rate of just above 1 goal per game. You are shamefully proving Kevin Sheedy right. When I see this Victory side play next season, I want good football and I don't want the away side providing it. Don't forget, Victoria could have a second team if/when the A-League expands.
