The Welsh Assembly Government have decided that there are too many Primary teachers trained in Wales. They have therefore decided to close some of the QTS courses in Wales despite the fact that our neighbors in England are crying out from a shortage of teachers. They have chosen to stop our BA(Hons) Primary Education with QTS course at Glyndwr University.
We aim to send this petition to the Welsh Assembly Government to show them the necessity of this course for the local area. The university has created a good relationship with local schools over a number of years which will be lost if the course is stopped.
Around 30% of students who complete the QTS course are mature students. Many of these student have families and would therefore be unable to do a QTS course if they had to go elsewhere. Also 60% of the students commute from outside of Wrexham to do this course, coming from Buckley, Telford, Chester and Prestatyn. If the course was stopped the nearest Welsh university for them would be Bangor which in some cases would double or triple their commuting time.
The last intake is due to be in September 2009 therefore the course will be stopped in June 2012.
This will also not only result in the job losses of many very skilled lecturers who have been with the university for a good number of years but may also deter people from joining the course because of it's future closure.
The Glyndwr course is a specialized course which due to the small teaching groups allows students to receive a personalized degree. This can help to ensure the students reach their full potential as a teacher.
We now need your support in this. Please sign our Petition and get involved in our effort by adding your comments and suggestions. Once we have enough signatures we will be send this off to the Welsh Assembly Government.
