'SAVE OUR SURF'

On the morning of Tuesday 24th 2009, Dubai's usual keen surfers paddle out for the fun but small 3 foot surf. The fun was soon interrupted when four police cars and two municipality trucks arrived at the scene with fury! Lights flashing and whistles blowing they proceeded to call everyone out off the water. They then demanded for our driving licenses with no explanation. One of the officers threatened a 14 year old boy (who would not have a license in the first place) that he would be put in prison if he did not hand over his license. After all the commotion, 6 of the surfers were issued fines for, according the officers 'sliding on the waves' - dhs210.

Surfing is an extremely positive part of city and a major benefit to Dubai's community. Synonymous with surfing, surfers of naturally very environmentally conscious and always responsible beach users.

Over the last 17 years, local surfers have saved many lives (with over 20 saves in the last month alone) during the days of bigger surf and continue to serve as unofficial lifesavers at Sunset beach (Umm Suqeim Open beach).
