A lot of states and cities have been making it illegal to own a pit bull just because they are strong dogs, and capable of hurting someone. But just because they can doesn't mean that they will. If they have a good owner, they're very sweet and make great pets. I own a pitbull, and you could do pretty much anything to her, and she wouldn't hurt you. My three year old sister has done things that would make most dogs at least snap at her. My pit bull never has. Overall, they're great pets.

There are many thing spreading myths about pit bulls. One says they've got a "locking jaw", meaning that they can't let go if they bite something. Dr. I. Brisbin has said that "The few studies which have been conducted of the structure of the skulls, mandibles and teeth of pit bulls show that, in proportion to their size, their jaw structure and thus its inferred functional morphology, is no different from that of any breed of dog. There is absolutely no evidence for the existence of any kind of 'locking mechanism' unique to the structure of the jaw and/or teeth of the American Pit Bull Terrier."
One, Tom Skeldon reported that a pit bull had started "going wild" and biting the kennel walls. He tranquilized the dog, and left for a few minutes, waiting for the dog to pass out. When he returned, the dog had bitten a cable, causing the door to open, he it wouldn't let go, even though it had passed out. But studies have found out that other types of dogs could also be unable to relax their jaws when unconscious.
There is another myth that they can't feel pain. This has been studied and proven untrue. Their nervous system works just like any other dog's.
One of the most common myths is that they'll turn on their owners with no reason. No sane dog will do this without reason. Usually, aggression can be traced to problems their owners have caused or disease.
