Top of the Pops, a British institution in the same vein as Doctor Who and Tomorrow's World, should never have been cancelled! There are just some things that should never be changed. When it was moved to Sunday night on BBC2, the BBC lost nearly half of the audience; someone should have lost their job over that decision. The show should be reinstated to it's rightful time-slot on Thursday evening on BBC1.
I would very much like to see the BBC bring back Top of the Pops, they have treated TOTP just the same way that they treated Dr Who, so many of us enjoyed both programmes and yet we had to go 16 years without Dr Who, thankfully now that is finally back.
I would very much like to see the BBC bring back Top of the Pops, it is an iconic British programme, the viewing figures of the final episode show how many people are interested in it! For me there is now only 1 programme that I watch on BBC Television, and that is Dr Who, please bring back TOTP and then there will be 2 programmes to look forward to.
I feel very sad that the BBC has gone so down hill, this year marks their 70th anniverary since television began at Alexandra Palace, come on BBC Television, be more like you used to be and let us all have those programmes back we enjoy, and please bring back TOTP and keep Dr Who on-air. Also please make all of the surviving 60's episodes and footage available on DVD unedited.
The BBC deliberately killed off all interest in TOTP. First by moving it (in 1996) from its traditional Thursday night slot of 7.00pm to Friday at 7.30pm, where it was in direct competition against 'Coronation Street' - how could *anything* compete with that? Then by moving it to Sunday on BBC2 last year - after which they repeatedly denied the rumours that the show was for the chop! That was a complete lie - moving it to BBC2 was *always* intended to be the last stage of their plan to phase it out, by which time they knew that no one would care or even notice. This is very sad indeed! Surely the BBC, as a PUBLIC SERVICE broadcaster, should have a duty to provide a weekly, popular music programme - regardless of ratings! The programme controllers who make these absurd decisions, without consulting their viewers, should realise that it is US, the licence-fee payers, who pay their fat cat, £100K-plus a year salaries!!!
It is a mistake to axe it. TOTP is a part of the charts. People still wanna see artists performing live. They should put it back on BBC1 in a good timeslot.
