UCF leadership will propose program cuts including the UCF Management Information Systems (MIS) Department within in the next few weeks during a July meeting with UCF Board of Trustees.

The MIS department was rumored to have low enrollment for the past few years after the arrival of the IT and IST majors in 2005. Lower enrollment in MIS should have been expected with the addition of two additional tech and system based majors. How can UCF leave the College of Business (CBA) without a technology based degree?

About 250 current students will be affected as well as future students and alumni. Everyone involved with UCF MIS in the past or present should do everything in their power to get involved and help support the UCF MIS Department.

'After careful consideration, university leadership will recommend limited academic program eliminations to the UCF Board of Trustees at its July meeting. Most UCF students and faculty and staff members are best served through these targeted measures, rather than through additional across-the-board cuts to all programs.

Earlier today, deans from the College of Business Administration, College of Sciences, College of Engineering and Computer Science, and College of Health and Public Affairs met with faculty and staff members who will be affected by the proposed eliminations. In all, we have proposed eliminating five programs that will affect about 50 faculty and staff members.

A complete list of the proposed program eliminations has been posted to the Budget Resource Center Web site:
http://www.umark.ucf.edu/clients/budgetdocs/ProgramEliminations.pdf
http://www.ucf.edu/budget/

The programs will be phased out over the next two years and will save UCF about $6.1 million.

Program Name Faculty Staff Students Estimated Savings
Management Information Systems 9 1 265 1,700,000

Faculty and staff members in those programs will remain with the university through the end of the spring 2010 semester. Some faculty and staff members may be provided continued employment until the end of the spring 2011 semester to help the remaining students complete their degrees.

UCF’s faculty and staff members make outstanding contributions to our university, and program eliminations are not a reflection on their work. Rather, the severity of this economic crisis has forced us to take this action.

I support this petition. How about instead of getting rid of the MIS Department UCF gets rid of some sports programs? A university is supposed to be about learning, not about sports.

As someone with an IT background but no formal education in the area and a desire to dual-major in Psychology for a (distant) future aim for a Ph.D. in that area, my Psychology professor recommended that I major in MIS. I personally believe I would be especially suited for MIS, though as I do not yet have any degree, that would be at least about 4 years off. Due to UCF\'s recent changes, my plan will have to be to get a related AS in concert with my pre-major in MIS in order to be able to move to a location where I can finish my MIS major. Is there really any sense in discarding an in-demand degree like MIS in this market?

I support this petition because I am currently an MIS student that will be graduating before the program is cut but I believe as technology continues to take over, this is one of the key programs to the success of our future.
