So, have you heard about Schapelle Corby? If you’re not from Australia or
Indonesia probably not. It’s the story of an otherwise unremarkable drug
trafficking trial made remarkable by irresponsible Australian media who
have made journalism a profession not worthy of people’s trust.
I don’t want to rabble on about the trial because enough has been said and
written about it but boy I really need to get my two cents worth out there.
I got a lot to vent! I’m mad because I was fooled and feel shameful about
the views I initially held. I want to rip into all the bull**** the
pro-Corby camp have served up and throw it in their faces.
In the beginning, admittedly, I was convinced of her innocence, angry at
her trial and sentence but eventually snapped out of the media induced
psychosis. After a lot of reading, the facts sunk in and the shameful
ugliness of the Australian public’s response convinced me I couldn’t be
part of this mob so convinced she is innocent. Among my circle of friends,
family and workmates etc I am of the few who believe Ms Corby is guilty, if
not certainly guilty and only possibly innocent.
One thing is certain in all of this, some Australians can be very nasty
and ugly, display inconsistent self-righteousness and indignation, ignorant
of the facts and blind to the hypocrisy in their own backyard and if they
are the majority of the so called 90% of Australians who are certain of her
innocence then it’s a worry.
So is she guilty or innocent? What facts have those who believe she is
innocent digested? Not much it seems. Be honest now. Apart from seeing lots
of tears on tv and reading obscenely bias, sensationalist and plainly wrong
reporting in the tabloid and general media its easy to come to the
conclusion that she’s innocent and get all worked up about it. The fact is
those who are so convinced of her innocence were not in the court to hear
all the facts.
Far from being a closed court, like those in western countries, this trial

A Mexican woman who smuggled 15.22 kg of marijuana received only a
seven-year prison term in December 2001. An Italian man was sentenced to 15
years in July last year for attempting to smuggle 5.3 kg of cocaine, a much
more dangerous drug. Corby did not smuggle cocaine and the amount of
marijuana she was accused of smuggling is far less than what the Mexican
woman brought in. Yet, she got a harsher sentence. Going by the Mexican
woman's case, Corby should have been given three or four years. ----

Now it all begins to become clear. It appears people like Keelty were
after some self-promoting news headlines with regard to the current drug
busts, when innocent Schapelle stumbled into the very thing the Authorities
have finally admitted they were investigating.
“Baggage handlers at Sydney Airport, being involved with the shipment of
drugs, both from overseas and within this country, using the baggage of
innocent people to carry out their task”.
They’ve kept quiet, even made claims that it wasn’t happening, all of
which hasn’t been of any help to Schapelle, in fact Keelty’s statements
were damning to her and he continues to try to cover what they were up to,
by insisting Schapelle’s case isn’t connected.
If Keelty knows so much, how come, once again, they only caught small fry?
They never catch the big fish. So how can the man who only partially
does his job, because he only partially knows what he needs to know, make
such damning statements about anyone, when he quiet clearly doesn’t have
all the facts, or we’d have seen the big fish in the roundup of these
latest drug busts. But we didn’t did we? All we can see is innocent
Schapelle in prison.
The Indonesians have been condemned for this, but now I’m wondering about
that. Were they also innocent victims in all of this? Were they misled by
our Authorities desire to keep a lid on an ongoing investigation relating
to drug smuggling and baggage handlers? Did Keelty’s statements to the
press also mislead them?
It’s highly likely Keelty’s evil mouth hasn’t helped and now, when, as
usual, it’s way too late, Howard finally gets what all other Australians
have been screaming about for months, “maybe Schapelle is innocent” “
maybe it’s possible someone could have planted drugs in her luggage” Maybe
there are corrupt baggage handlers at Sydney airport “ which Schapelle has
claimed from day one.
I think our Government Authorities owe the Indonesians and Australians an
apology. I also think |
