Essay: How I REALLY feel about High School
I believe that High School is getting more and more pointless as the years go by. I feel that we aren’t learning the right things we need to know in order to have a successful life in America. Most of the classes we take that are “required” are the ones that we don't really need to take.
I hold on to this belief because students like me are failing classes that are too hard and difficult to understand. We spend our time studying and memorizing things that we will probably never use in our life.
I’m addressing students, teachers and the members of the board of education for various reasons. Teachers spend their time teaching students, some for years, these things that I say are useless. They teach things like Chemistry, Algebra, and World History, instead of money management, economics, basic math and applied technology. Would you rather know how to balance your checkbook, or how to balance a chemical equation? The Board of Education allows us to take these required classes in order to graduate, and for us to do that we have to pass that class with a 60% or higher. The students that actually do work hard on something they don't understand may get penalized by their parents for a bad grade. Most of their parents don't do the “Hi honey! How was your day? What did you learn?” anymore. So they don't know what we spend our time on. If they were to walk into their child’s Chemistry class and looked at what was on the board, they would have to wait for the teacher to explain to the class in order to be on the same page. And we get punished like having our privileges taken away because we got a bad grade on a test that they have never learned in their life. Things have advanced so much more from back when they were in school.
One thing that I also find really disturbing is the amount of homework we get. We get flooded with so much homework that we don't have a life anymore. It’s like signing a contract with the Devil! It’s so bad that I heard a conversation between two girls in my class and one said, “I’m bored.” And the other said, “I’m pretty sure you have homework to do.” That’s bad for us because since we are constantly doing homework we are miss out on things that we need, like sleep and breakfast for example. I think we should at least sacrifice that for learning something important!
