We are now facing a new adolescent epidemic– sleep deprivation. Though some may laugh at the idea of sleep deprivation being an “epidemic”, it truly poses serious threats to a teen’s physical and mental well-being.

Countless car accidents are caused due to a drowsy driver and over 50% of the time, the driver is under 18. Depression and other mental health issues have been directly correlated with a lack of sleep.

What is causing this sleep deprivation? Though many factors contribute to it, the largest factor is the very early school starting time. For quite some time, doctors and sleep researchers have been urging school districts to start school hours later in the day. It is only in the recent past that school districts have begun to listen.

Schools have a duty to educate children in the most effective manner, and in a manner not detrimental to their health. With an extra hour of sleep each night, students would be more alert in the classroom and ready to learn.

This is why I, as well as a great portion of the medical community, urge all school administrations and districts to adjust school start times so that students are safer, healthier, and happier.

I support this petition. Wow, I get my bus at 6:45...there's something seriously wrong with that! The first bell for homeroom rings at 7:15, again I say seriously messed up, and they wonder why people are late all the time!

I really think the reason why I'm getting an F in Geometry is because the class goes from 8:48 - 9:48 am, which is way to early.
