yet another discaraceful injustice on 5 innocent men created by the greed and corruption of mainstream politicians, they have given away our natural resources and five Mayo mens liberty, hang your heads in shame.
The people of erris for decades have suffered under various dictators. They say our government is a democracy well i dont know about that So it comes as no surprize to me how shell have been able to bulldoze there way in here. What the rossport 5 are doing is amazing and i am proud of them.
besides protecting the health and safety of their families, the Rossport Five are protecting an area of great natural beauty which if spoiled will impact on the tourist industry thus negating massive government investment in tourism. Wake up Dublin. you are allowing a priceless natural asset to be spoiled and putting at risk the jobs which depend on it. The task of defending Irelands beautiful Atlantic coast should no fall on the shoulders of five families and a few activists although they are
doing magnificent job so far. The Government should not worry about loss of confidence by investors if it tells Shell to go elsewhere. shell is not a byword in moral behavior as far as the environment is concerned. Remember Brent Spar? Shell tried to quietly tow a rusting oil platform containing tons of oil sludge out to sea and sink it. On that occasion a non government group stopped Shell until the UK Government stepped in. Until the government sees off shell organisations of all sorts(trade unions, farmers organisations, tourist organisations etc) should send their finest and fittest young people, properly equiped, to help hold the site against further despoliation
I just want to offer my support to the Rossport 5 and their families. Tragically the Irish Government seem unwilling to preserve and protect this unpolluted, unspoilt area. Thank God there are brave citizens who will not bow down to large companies of dubious reputation
Was in Ross Port last week. The Shell/Statoil PR machine would have you believe one thing but getting the facts first hand leads to a totally different picture. A development like this would NOT be allow in the UK and should not be allowed in Ireland.
This issue shows the need for the Government to revise it's policy on foreign investment in Ireland, with respect to it's natural resources. It is a shame that a concerned member of the public has been imprisoned for over 50 days in relation to this. I believe the pipe line should not go ahead and that the outside bodies/ third parties involved in the case should have no personal interest or affiliation with Shell.
The quality of life and interests of a group of Irish people has been put secondary to the interests of an oil company. Governements are supposed to be for the people, by the people etc. At present, those we have elected to serve our intersts are letting us sadly down.
Good luck lads, but i think in ireland your in for it. Dont think you are rich enough to have any sympathy from anyone who can help you, especially the goverment, who dont want to upset the big companies who have created a false ireland that allows us to live in fear and dept.Ive noticed that the peoples opinion does not matter - nice treaty!Iraq! etc etc. time to speak up.
Tá sé thar am acmhainní nádúrtha na tíre seo a roinnt i measc na ndaoine, ní i measc comhlachtaí idirnáisiúnta ollsaibhir. Tá leatrom déanta ar an iarthar ró-fhada. Is dóigh liom go bhfuil Michael Davitt ag casadh ina uaigh. Ní síocháin go saoirse.
Well done to you. The more irish people like you stand up for your rights the less power these government backed Money leaching corporations steal from ordinary people.
PS The bit that kills me is the background story that shell greased up "our"politicians years ago and now own our oil.
As a missionary priest I am a witness peoples land being grabbed mining companies. Their livelihoods are destroyed and their environment poisoned. It is sad to think that they think that they can get away with the same schemes in Mayo. Rossport, you have many people who are in solidarity with you ; you are not alone.
These are the stories we hear from South America and show conscern. That it can happen in a "developed" EU country shows the power of these companies that must be broken.
