When ordinary citizens take extreme action for altruistic concerns, the Government has no option but to stop and listen. Disenfranchisement is a symptom of politicians weighing purely financial gain against the social consequences of tehir actions. If Irish people are prepared to go to jail to oppose a political decision, then someone has forgotten their mandate as a public servant, this never should have happened. The Government would rather face down the people than renegotiate with a bunch of suits. Cowards.

It seems to me that certain people (2039 Stephen Fleming) consider economic prosperity more important than human rights. When the elected government of a country stops listening to its people and starts listening to multinationals then that country is in trouble.

Noor Aza Othman said 09/28/05, 5:00 pm (verified)
In The Irish Times today, Noel Dempsey very arrogantly attacks Shell to Sea Campaign. Who the hell is he to attack the values of democracy that the public are entitled to. Shell to Sea must reply with a long article in The Irish Times to this injustice, because such democratic values need to be uphold and defended without any compromise. This campaign must extend towards such struggle to highlight such democratic entitlement and human rights of the public, including the unfortunate Mayo rural farmers and the Campaign itself. Thanks for such a brilliant campaign and to the farmers and their families for being such an inspiration towards instigating ordinary people's struggle against such brutal capitalist govt. and multinational corporations.

Stephen Fleming said 09/27/05, 11:45 am (verified)
The reason Ireland is in such a prosperous position today can be totally linked to the shell corporation. Not only were Shell the main reason for the celtic tiger economic boom, but they were instrumental in the overthrow of british rule in this country. I find it disgraceful that foreigners are trying to turn the people of Ireland against a company that has always looked out for the best wishes of the Irish people. What Shell are trying to do will benefit the irish people as a whole, not just the eco-campaigners that have always throughout history failed to see the big picture. I hope that the good name of shell is not tarnished by these small minded "warriors" who, through their own selfish actions, are placing people in danger.

It is unconscionable that with our knowledge of the environment and of the hazards associated with the proposed oil and gas activities, that these men who are fighting to protect their communities have been jailed. Until the greed-driven quest for fossil fuels ceases, citizens have no alternative but to stand up for the health of those they care about, since we cannot rely on our governments to do so. A similar pipeline in Victoria, Australia, blew up killing two persons and reducing the supply of gas so much that Melbourne was without gas for 3 months. Shell also arranged for the judicial murder, by hanging, of seven environmental protestors in Africa. They are an evil company and should be stopped. The people of Ireland should not be dictated to by such evil mem and women. Release the Rossport 5 immediately.
