This petition is to either let hookah bars in the New York City area be exempt from the anti-smoking laws in effect, or to re-write the laws themselves to allow for these bars to exist legally.

Currently, hookah bar owners are allowed to apply for a license to sell tobacco if they make 10% of their total profit from tobacco, and 40% from the sale alcohol. The problem with those numbers is that owners of hookah bars are primarily Muslim, and many cater to Muslim customers. Muslim people are forbidden to touch alcohol for religious reasons, and thus this creates an unfair situation for bar owners.

Please reconsider the current position on hookah bars and re-write the current laws.

Owners of a private business should be able to control it how they want. Both state and federal governments are overstepping their authority.

Please reconsider your stand, hookah is a rising trend and this city needs as many small businesses as possible.
