im a recovered self injurer and im proud of my self, and i tihnk that if people were more educated on the subject then i wouldnt have 100 people coming up to me everyday asking me what happened to my arms, i think its a good idea to have a day and educate people on how it really is becoming a problem in our society

i'm a cutter and i had no idea...we had a day..i think it would make it alot easier for people to come out and seek help if more people knew how serious it was...and weren't so quick to judge!!!

I think it's quite sad, that just a few people know about it. I didn't knew before I started. I don't even know if we in Germany have a day like this.

Brandy said 07/10/05, 10:44 am (verified)
I personally feel that the awareness for the causes and reasons for self-injury should come to light for more Americans. There are so many people who know a self-injurer, but probably either do not want to admit that the signs are there, or don't know how to deal with it. Like Anorexia, this is a pretty taboo issue and is also a recently new "epidemic," and people need to be educated about this. Thank you!

Heather said 07/07/05, 9:54 pm (verified)
This is for a good cause so all you other people out there who think I'm ****en gay, FUCK YOU. This person is only trying to help and you shoot them down with a magnum. What the hell is wrong with you people? I think this is for a good cause, and all you dips who signed it saying crap like "get a life" or "who gives a shyt" are juss helping this cause for the awareness. My friend used to be a cutter, and I knew her problems, knew how she felt. She poured her heart out to me, and to everyone else out there who are cutters, I feel for ya, keep on hanging on, dont let go.

Marie said 07/07/05, 9:48 pm (verified)
I used to cut myself, and it's not a pretty thing....My friend who is so much better than she what she is now is a self-inflicter and i wish she would stop. Personally, I think all shes doing is trying to get attention because shes a ****en POSER. Seriously, she has nothing to cut herself over. But to everyone else out there, I wish you well, find a way to make peace with your problems. Blessed Be. ....Yes I'm Wiccan.

i am not sure what to think about this whole SI, but i know that if people are hurting themselves, it's for reasons that they obviously are too scared/embarrassed to verbalize. i am not one to SI, but i know someone who is and she is a beautiful person with a huge, wonderful heart... and i pray that she can get the help she needs through her family, friends and this. you don't have to agree with WHY people who SI do it... just know that there IS a very serious problem and try to empathize with them. We need to be able to point them in the right direction for help... not ostercize (sp? sorry) them. love them... love you Ang!

I agree with this idea, we shouldn't have to be ashamed anymore but, I must say sending this to George W. Bush is NOT going to do much good seeing as state governments are responsible for most of their own public awareness stuff not the federal. But as a former self injurer..I will support this petition anyway

I support this petition... this is an issue that is growing at such a fast rate that it really needs to be addressed by society.

#48

Jess said 06/17/05, 4:34 pm (verified)
I agree with Ashley: "I support this because of the rude comments that other people (who don't understand) make rude comments about SI." People make comments because they are afraid and ignorant of the facts. They're scared and don't understand. I think this is a wonderful idea. But I think you might have trouble with people making comments about this on the day. I support gay rights, and there is a day of silence, for all the people who can't say that they are gay because of the discrimination and so many people make stupid comments then. For all of us, though, I hope this succeeds.

nikki said 06/17/05, 4:13 am (verified)

I think it would be a good thing for people to know more about why people hurt themselves. Maybe those who critisize and automatically lable will understand that not everyone is like them and deal with problems and depression in other ways. Maybe people will realizes its not just a cry for attention.
#40

Sam said 06/15/05, 5:22 am (verified)

More and more people should know about self harm. However, I worry that it could be used wrongly, mainly for attention, especially by people in the public eye. I'm glad there is a Self Injury Awareness Day, but I also hope that it is properly explained, as half explanations could lead to some people thinking that SI is not serious, and doing it "for a laugh".
#16

Danni said 06/09/05, 3:21 am (verified)

I have very mixed feelings about this issue. Self affliction is real...and many people should recognize that..but its also an art... i happen to be an artist...I paint with my blood so to speak...si is an emotion..a trance you go into just like an artist does...i dont show people my "art" but many people do... it depends on how "famous" you want to become for your "art"! Im speaking in medaphors here but you all get the point... my favorite quote is "dying is and art, like all things...I just do it especially well" When i SI i feel like Ive died..then i am reborn..Blood is life...blood is eternal..why not share your blood...see your blood...feel your blood! i may sound kookoo but this is what i feel!
