I support this petition. I self harm and have for 2 years. It'd be great to get more people talking about self harm and for people to realise that people who self harm are not nesicarilly 'emo'
i didnt even know that there was a day but also think that if we want it to be more known people need to understand more about self harm. more awareness is needed!!
our daughter told us two and a half years ago she self harmed, it has been very difficult to get her the help she needs and wants,i support this with all my heart and hope it helps all the people out there suffering in silence
I completely support Self-Injury Awareness Day, being a self-harmer myself. However, the biggest reason I support this petition and the awareness is because of people like signer 156 who, as Dr. R said, shouldn't even be on this site.
I hate how so many people are so un-educated and close-minded about self injury. It's becoming an epidemic and I'm grateful to see that someone is trying to spread awareness.
I support this petition. It is also extreamly sad to see some of the comments made by folk who clearly should not be on this web site. Self Harm (or whatever you call it) is one of the most misunderstood of all psychological problems and deserves and indeed demands proper recognition and clinical input. We need to shout, indeed scream at the political folk in order that funding and proper treatment is made available by professionals who know what they are talking about and understand the patient with a little bit of love - or is that so difficult?
I support this petition. I say stop trying to stop you fucking morons, let cutters cut themselves and beed to death. Your a waste of space and pathetic. I celebrate your wanting to die and your awful trials at it. Keep on cutting.
I support this petition. I think it is so important for people to understand how a self-injurer feels and that we're people too. I am a cutter and there are so many people who don't know how to deal with me. I think raising awareness of this issue would be a huge step in the right direction.
I support this petition. I hid the fact that i was self injuring for 10 years, 10 very difficult years. Many children, adolesents and adults out there would find much relife if there was not such a stigma around the subject.
i used to be a cutter because i had depression. when people found out i cut myself a lot of people bullied me for it, i think it is a good idea to raise awareness because most people dont realise why people cut themselves
I'm French.
I think awareness day is a good idea, not to give glory to cutters but to seriously raise awareness, its becoming a major issue on jr and sr high schools and the more awareness the better
I'm from the uk, and yes people do know about it but they only know from that they have heard which is hardly ever the truth. People need to be made more aware and be told the truth!
I'm from the UK, and although there is quite a bit of awareness, there is virtually nothing to help the people who do self harm or for their family/friends. This needs to be changed, there should be much more help available, which we can get through awareness and more research into self harm. The NHS should really think through the fact that anyone under 18 who attempts suicide and is brought into hospital will go to a children's ward. How does that make sense??
I'm a cutter, i dont want help right now, that does not mean i wont want it or need it in the future or that others dont want it. be aware of your surroundings, things arent so peachy afterall are they?

Awareness regarding Self-Injury NEEDS to be raised throughout the USA. I feel that everyone--ESPECIALLY the youth of America--need to know the truths to Self-Injury, as well as the lies. Facts need to be explained, and lies need to be forgotten. There seems to be a National Awareness Day/Week/Month for just about everything out there, but National Self-Injury Awareness Day is not a well-known one. This day needs to be more well-known, so that we can make the growing problem of Self-Injury more well-known.
Awarness most definantly needs to be raised in the world, it seems like such a shock to so many people they have no idea what goes on around them. It just needs to be a little better known to the world other then the SIers so we can be more fully accepted into society.
I'm fron the UK and my experience is that a lot of people, especially teenagers (even those who don't self injure), are aware of self harm and self injury. I think, rather than using the day to raise awareness (although that does need to be done), it should be used primarily to dismiss myths and rumours about self injury.
One of the fears I have about raising awareness is that it may give the idea to people who would otherwise never have done it.
However, awareness does need to be raised - people talk about other problems people have all the time, self injury is rarely/never mentioned.
I agree with this all the way. There should def be more awareness of this, so ppl understand the seriousness of SI. We (SIers) deserve a day like this.
i totally agree with this, i think that it should be something way more talked about but not by doctors but by poeple who have recoved or are trying because they no more then any doctor will ever(unless theyve been there). Also it should be targeted around the world, not just USA!, Canadians cut to, i no i am one.
I know that, since I'm not a cutter, my words might be taken the wrong way, so I'll try to be careful. I think that there should definitely be more awareness about the problem of cutting or other self-injury and especially about how the issue can be addressed. Some of the comments on this petition seem to encourage cutting -- that is not good. I have known several people who hurt themselves and I am all in favor of an awareness day to help people, but let's not treat this sarcastically, lightly, or as if it were an attention-getter. Self-injury is no joke and should not be treated as such.
people live their lives pretending this issue doesnt exist and it does... more people need to be aware...more people should know... more people should care
People should be aware its out there. And SI'ers need to feel like they aren't alone.
Take care of your citizens, especially the ones who are too weak to take care of themselves.
this petition is genius. cutting shouldn't be some taboo thing that just happens to the "crazy" people in movies. i've been cutting for 5 years, and this petition is what i have been waiting for.
I think this will be good for a lot of people, even if I don't know how it will affect me. I have been a cutter for about 3 years, and I was fine with people not being aware, but I understand that it will help a lot of people feel less left out. I support that.
I think this needs to be recognized and more people need to be made aware. The more aware people are, the better they can spot the signs and get help for loved ones... and SIers can know that they are not alone so they don't have to be ashamed of getting help.
once again...i think this is an excellent idea and i am completely for raising awareness...more information...less pain and unexpectedness and maybe people will finally know how to deal with SI
i'm a cutter, been so for about 13 years now. I know there's a lot of people out there with bigger problems than me, but it's just the way i deal with things. said and done. I believe there should be a day for people like us because telling people that we do is usually the first step to them understanding us and for us to get better. I think this is a very good idea and thank whoever created this petition
