In today’s society, skateboarding and inline skating is seen as a problem to the community and destruction to the environment. The truth is though that it is not the skaters fault most of the time for grinding on public rails and curbs, it is the lack of an otherwise safe environment for them to do these things. The damage to the natural environment and bad reputation could all be easily avoided by providing skaters with a safer and more secure environment – a skate park for all types of skaters (skateboarders, inline skaters) that is easily accessible in the downtown Toronto area. Skating is an energetic, positive and creative outlet that promotes healthy development that is interfered by the public’s negative and ignorant view of skaters.

Skaters need skate parks like golfers need golf courses or driving ranges. It is not safe for golfers or other people for them to be driving golf balls into an open public space, just as well as it is not safe for skaters to skate on public streets with hazards such as cars – it is just too dangerous. Skaters not only use skate parks for recreational use, but for the social aspect and the fact that they get a lot of exercise, which is good considering today’s “lazy generation.” Another thing, without somewhere to practice their sport, some young people may turn to vandalism and crime to have something to do, when such productive time could be spent at a skate park. Businesses have no need to worry either, because the increase in traffic to the area would only increase revenue and boost the economy of the area.

The funny thing about the public vs. skaters is the fact that the public regards them as annoying and disrespectful, and even go as far as putting skate stoppers or board blockers (metal plates that are bolted onto curbs, hand rails and benches) to prevent skaters from doing what they enjoy. And the funny thing you might ask? It is the fact that skaters end up skating outside in frustration because the public is not willing to build a skate park for them in an area that is convenient. There are skate parks in the GTA, but not where they are needed, such as downtown and this creates a problem for current skaters because of the distance and so they just end up quitting the sport altogether. It would make sense to build a skate park in the downtown area because of the large amount of college and university students in the vicinity that would be interested in skating but are just not able to commute to where an existing skate park is. The sport is only going to get bigger, and the problems associated with skating on private property are going to get worse.

There is one way to fix this perceived problem – build an accessible skate park. Cities will only go into reverse and create a large unfriendly outburst among youth by trying to ban skating altogether or introducing fines for skating on public property. This action would most likely create a surge in crime and vandalism, which is one of the things the downtown area does not need more of. The way to make this work is for the city to encourage safe hobbies for youth and providing skills for everyday use such as how to fall safely, how to learn to handle themselves, plus many other skills that are very useful. A skate park encourages exercise and provides youth with a fun, socially interactive environment that educates youth in safety as well as influences them to interact with others in an easy-going way.

Skate parks are a positive way to learn and develop new and existing skills that can be used in everyday life, as well as lessening possible injuries now and in the future because of the controlled environment. Without an accessible skate park in the downtown Toronto area, youth are forced to skate on public property which is dangerous for the skaters, surrounding people and cars on the street. Skating in public areas is also damaging for the natural environment (benches, hand rails) because it deteriorates them and costs the city valuable funding to replace. Skate parks provide a positive social and recreational environment which is necessary for healthy development.

I support this petition. 100% logical solution. Since Vancouver has a city built plaza specifically for skateboarders and other legal places to skate, I couldnt believe there wasnt anything here in Toronto. With such a larger population I was expecting more.

I support this petition. This is a good idea and they should also build skateparks in empty areas where nothing is done like wilmington park

I support this petition and hope that the city will recognize skating/boarding/etc. as more than destruction.
