Smoking affects non smokers as well as smokers because of secondhand smoke. My right to breathe is more important than a smokers right to smoke. I HATE smokers.

Smoking is, simply put, the number one cause of the number one type of the number one cause of death in this country. That is to say that it causes 90% of all lung cancer, which is the most common type of deadly cancer, and cancer is now the leading cause of death in the United States. If the role of laws is to protect the society over which they govern, then it follows that tobacco production and all forms of smoking MUST be made illegal. Cigarettes are not like most other drugs, in that a black market thrives for substances with significant mind-altering effects. Furthermore, studies have shown that a person is very unlikely to become addicted to smoking after age 18. If cigarettes are banned, there will not be a significant illegal market for them, nor will people miss them once they have managed to quit. It is my opinion that we must make smoking a historical fact rather than the plague of the 21st century.
In spite of laws prohibiting sales of tobacco to minors in Massachusetts, and in spite of being raised in a non-smoking home, three of five of my children (ages 14 to 24) smoke. My two oldest (daughters-24 and 22) have told me that a majority of their friends in high school smoked, so they did as well. Later, in college and waitressing in restaurants, and breaks usually meant cigarettes. They haven't been able to quit, they said. Sadly, we have discovered our 14 yr. old son smoking. He said he has smoked since last summer. The desire to be included by peers, and older kids he thinks are cool, were precipitating factors in his picking up cgarettes. Upon investigation, I have found cigarettes are extremely easy to obtain. Kids simply wait ouside stores and give an accomodating adult money to make the purchase. When young teens are seen smoking on the street, there are no consequences. In Massachusetts, it is illegal for "non-family
members" to give minors cigarettes, according to the Mass. DPH (who told me the meaning of the law against minors purchasing tobacco) but legal for "family members" to give children cigarettes.
What kind of law is this?
If it is illegal for any family member to give a children illegal drugs or alcohol, than it should be illegal for ANYONE to give children tobacco products. Massachusetts, and all authorities who purport to support the protection of children from the dangers of tobacco use and addiction need to stand in a meaningful way for what they say they believe. Stop being ambivalent and hypocritical. At least enforce the law as it is written, and give it real teeth--And make it illegal for ANYONE to give children tobacco-including "family members"!

I don't have much to say, but I'm a smoker and I definatly would like to see smoking become illegal....it serves no perpose. If cigarettes are legal then why not crack, cocain, heroin, or any other harmful drug? It just makes little sense to me.
Smoking is an unattractive and unhealthy habit. 2nd-hand smoke is more deadly than actually inhaling a cigarette. I don't want to get cancer because of someone else's bad habit.
I think, in my humble opinion that smoking has done nothing but hurt people (even people that don't smoke, i.e. second hand smoking.) Basically people should have a smoke free society, as for smokers, franklly if you wan;t to smoke do it in your basement away from all of us who don't want to suffer the same fate as you.

the government won't ban smoking because they get a great deal of money from taxable tobacco sales! but at the end of the day, heath of the nation is more important and the money saved by individuals and companies who have to pay out for the extra heath care will be a lot. Not only that, but many lost hours of business because people are sick from smoking related illnesses, the related drug use from tobacco (unable to roll a joint if tobacco is illegal), need I go on?
