Very shocked that People would be promoting this as a way for anyone to make money. Don't you care about where the animals go? I think a story on pullymills and the tragic lives these dogs live to produce for people like this young man would be next in your magazine..otherwise you will be losing many readers who are shocked that you would promote this.
NOT one of your best decisions. I would think that someone in your organization has enough common sense to look at BOTH sides of an issue before publishing (and therefore condoning) such a controvertional issue. No matter how you sugar coat it, it's still a puppymill and should be closed down...actually, the person running it should be charged with animal cruelty.
There are no words to express my deep sorrow that as editor of a magazine so large you remain so uneducated on the subject of puppymills. May the editors, Timothy Hampson, and his family that assists him endure the same treatment they heap on these in their care.
this happens here in the UK. The quicker we can educate people on the dreadful conditions these babies are born into the better...
puppy farms should be shut down. and the owners banned from keeping animals for life
After looking at the website, there is no doubt that this young entrepreuneur is running a puppy mill. People Magazine needs to retract this story and do a story on puppy mills.
I think this PUPPYMILLER and the editors at People should visit a local shelter's Kill Room and see all the adorable aniamls that are PTS each day for lack of homes. There are more than enough healthy dogs, including purebreds, languishing in shelters to go around. Endorsing a puppymiller in a National magazine is irresponsible to say the least.
The puppys who are sold here are the lucky ones. It is because of their parents, malnourished and abused, that we are so against this. The dogs who produced these puppies are given only enough nourishment to stay alive and produce puppies. Really, everyone should know better by now!
A terrible footnote to this is that it will encourage others to try the same thing. Of course it's just a
business to this kid, and these dogs
are just a product.
He doesn't even care
who gets them, as long as they can pay
the price. If the dogs are not spayed or neutered, then someone else can order a couple of dogs and start the cycle of a puppy mill all over again.
I have been a people subscriber for years I think this will be my last subscription. For People to encourage backyard breeders or puppymillers is enough for me!!!
Goodbye
If this young man was selling human beings, would you still sing his praises?
Why not do a story on how hard it is to run a rescue shelter for all of the animals bred in puppy mills that end up being abandoned?
Please tell the other side of the story!
It is sad that this young man is unaware of what he is doing. And, his parent allowes her son to continue to breed and sell little lives to who knows what fate.
It is quite sad that your magazine has chosen to give accolades to Puppymilling! Even EBAY is smart enough NOT to ALLOW the marketing and selling of Puppies, Dogs, Cats & Kittens on their auction site. PEOPLE Magazine I thought you were more INTUNED to what PEOPLE of this nation are really interested in "Safe & Humane" Treatment of our beloved pets. Have you NO idea or did you just forget what kind of representation and message your article on this can send to PEOPLE????
How could People magazine promote a puppy mill. You magazine is now responsible for the harsh life and death of many dogs and puppies. Dogs are living, intelligent creatures with feelings. They are not a "thing" that should be bred and sent over the internet as one would purchase a book. This is disgusting and People magazine should print a statement indicating that such practices are denounced. It should also publish a story on the many horrors of puppymills for both the breeder dogs and for their puppies.
I can not believe that people still are allowed to treat animals like property.Did we forget why animals are here?I will never by People Magazine and tell all about this.
Puppy mills treat animals in a cruel and inhumane manner. Glorifying someone who sells these poor abused, badly bred dogs is wrong. Child or adult, its a not an action to be encouraged. People Magazine editors should know better. Never again will I purchase your magazine.
I am appalled that a magizine as far reaching as People Magazine for supporting puppymills. I for one will cx my subscription. I can NOT support a magazine who has NO idea how many animals are PUT TO SLEEP every day becaude of "impulse buying" when they see a "cute" puppy that they have no idea what pain and suffering goes on behind "Puppy Mills". I have 4 granddaughters, who from the time they were able to speak, when going into a pet store to but small critter supplies, would go up to an adult/family holding one of those "cute" pups, would ask " do you have any idea haw may litters that puppy's mom has had this year alone? Do you have any ideas under WHAT conditions that "cute" puppy was born under? Do you know what potintial health problems THAT particular pup has been born with and how to find out before the pup cots $100's of $$$ at the vet before you find out? My kids/grandkid learned this "speech" from hearing it from their Grandmother/Mother make it 100's of times. In my adult life, my husband and I have rescued apox 25-28 dog...not all puppies either, and have never been dissapointed that we saved someone's life. Please, please consider and as another writer suggested.."do an article that shows the horrific puppy mill conditions' Thank you for reading, and I hope acting this petitian.
OK People.....really bad!! Ask the people at AARP. This is a horrific practice that the dog world condemns with their whole heart. This kid should be stopped and put out of business...shame on you people, shame on you puppy milling teen!!!!!!!! Poor little pups.
Hopefully now that People has shown a puppy entrepreneur, you will do an article on puppymills. If that young man saw the conditions his puppies come from he might find he wants to switch right now into the clothing business. At the same time, you will be doing a great service to the public and the poor animals caught in the puppymill mire.
Puppymills are a horrendous way for a pup to come into this world & have their first experiences with people. They all need to be shut down. They benefit no one. Pat Kratzer
As enlightened people, the staff of People Magazine should really know better! Don't you check with reputable breeders if this is a good idea, before you go to print?! I'm a journalist myself and I am ashamed of however is trying to push this kind of trash.
Do you know why these puppies are so small? Because they are the runts of their litters and they are usually very frail and have multiple health issues. I will never ever buy your magazine again, and I will tell anyone I see buying it what you have done!
I think that People Magazine should be more aware of just what kind of articles it is printing. As we all know puppy mills are horrible places so why are we making a celebrity out of this young man? These type of things need to be STOPPED! Not praised.
This young man has garnered praise for having become a merchant in misery and suffering. This is beyond disgusting.I have purchased my last PEOPLE magazine.
Timothy Hampson is disgusting-- a money hungry entrepreneur with no regard for the health and welfare of animals - and shame on his mother who should know better and have taught her son about responsibility. This indiscriinate inbreeding is what happened to a dog I recently saw that was born with no left leg and ended up in a shelter. Come on, People Magazine - you should be ashamed of promoting Timothy Hampson as a "budding" merchant - he is a budding animal cruelty promoter.
This is disturbing..with so many "unwanted" and overbred animals in our country a story about adding to the problem is a slap in the face to those in rescue. Hopefully People magazine will give some exposure to the other side of breeding.....the products of their "cash scheme" that get tossed to the side in our nations shelters.
Those poor pups!! If people actually cared for animals, they would NOT be running mills!! There goes my subscription to People, I havent read this issue yet, but as soon as I get home, I'm throwing the damn thing away!
I've written a letter to the editor to People as well. We must protect the animals from the puppymills and apparently People magazine. Let's rattle the cage of the "teenage entrepreneur".
Thank you to People Magazine for bringing this outrageous situation to our attention.
Now, lets see you do the RIGHT thing and allow the educated public to address this openly in your mag.
Puppies are not a Christmas Gift, they are a lifetime committment.
Come on, People Magazine, where have you been? This is exactly the kind of thing that encourages puppy mills. Have you forgotten that these dogs are living, breathing, FEELING creatures?
It is unfortunate that your magazine has chosen to highlight the terrible practice of selling puppies for profit. Obviously the only way to rectify this mistaken article on your part is to immediately publish a retraction in the form of an article warning of the reprehensible activities of puppy mills and Internet breeders and extolling the work of those involved in the rescue of dogs.
It is inexcusable to print an article which so blatantly promotes the peddling of animals purely for profit. People magazine must print an article which clearly shows the "cost" of puppymills and puppy brokering. ?These practices are directly responsible for a large portion of the overpopulation of our shelters and rescue organizations.
This is disgusting, shame on you People Magazine!! Why do this to animals? If the teenagers want to make money, why don't they set-up a lemonaide stand or sell unused items and donate something to charity? I would be ashamed and embarassed to have these children in my family.
This is an insult to careful breeders who try to place their puppies in appropriate homes. Breeding should be done only with improving the breed in mind and puppies never should be placed through a broker. Please consider doing an article on the right way to select and purchase a puppy.
What were you thinking by printing this article? It's obvious you weren't thinking at all, but the damage you have done by promoting this "entrepreneur" will probably start showing up in animals shelters in the near future. I encourage you to do some research on the MILLIONS of unwanted animals that are euthanized each year. Most produced by idiots. breeding to make money with no regard for the health of what they are producing, or the kind of home the dog they produced with have. As a rescuer, I find it very disturbing that a magazine of your popularity would publish such an irresponsible article. These are LIVING animals, not something you put on a shelf. Who will make sure they go to good homes? Surely, not you. But by printing the article, you have potentially encouraged countless others to start their own breeding program. Unless you print an article that focuses on the awareness of the overpopulation of dogs, you will lose my business - and I'm sure the business of countless other rescuers and animal groups. Shame on you.
this is somthing that will have to stop. that kid is only there for the mony if he loves dogs he should stop this now.
not when its to late for the poor dog.
I have spend the last 10 years trying to educate for responsible buyers - one person can trample, with People all the good works of others and give someone who would never have thought of making money this way, a new idea for greed.
As a dog lover and responsible pet owner I was very upset by this portion of your article. Please do a followup story on the horrors of so many puppy mills in this country so the public can be more educated about this horrendous practice.
What a disgrace. This should NOT be encouraged. How can People Magazine actually give this kid recognition. People Magazine and this kid need to spend some time in a shelter or with a rescue group who nurture all the unwanted, negelected, abused dogs that these horrific Puppy Mills produce. Don't buy while others die.
I've just begun to get into the aspect of "animal rescue". Even before seeing and knowing what goes on in this sick world of "profit" breeders, I would never condone a child of mine to do such a disgraceful thing. People magazine should be ashamed and stop this!
People Magazine and Mr. Hampson need to visit the puppymills where he is getting his puppies from. Possibly he has seen the conditions these dogs are kept in and doesn't care. How sad.
This article and this "business" are as irresponsible as it gets. Maybe this young man, his mother and any of your readers that were impressed by this article should go to their local "kill shelter", volunteer and see what happens to these dogs and others like them. Not one of you would ever feel the same way again!
I think its disgusting and irresponsible to give Timothy Hampson and his operation any media attention at all. He's making money off of brokering dogs. Just disgusting. I wont be purchasing your magazine anymomre.
a young man should recieve more notice if he is dedicated to OPENING rescue legue programs or CREATING educational awareness to his peers (the next generation of "buyers") than using a system to enter the leagues of the independently wealthy. WHAT CHILD IS SAVING OUR WORLD IF THEY ARE LEARNING TO PROFIT OFF IT?
In this day and age, after all the publicity, a magazine like this should know better. I won't be buying People in the future. Absolutely disgusting. Go sell Avon or Tupperware!
People magazine should have done it's research on this one. This is not praise-worthy, rather it is shameful!! I would have expected more from People magazine.
