People Mag., who let
that article go to print? Cuddlypuppy. com.!! Puppymill, is the correct term.
Producing puppies as a way to earn money is irresponsbile and ignorant. I think
it was "mom's" idea,
the kid, he's too young. Shelters
don't need more ill
bred dogs to eventually or quite often, put down, like those from mills, when, their
owners learn the costs to maintain health issues, bye-bye, puppy.
Shelters all over
the country full of badly bred dogs that
have came from
puppymills or back
yard breeders, such as Cuddlypuppy.com.
People Mag.,please,
it's time to do an
article or two on
GOOD breeders, as a tool for educating
people about mill
dogs VS breeders
who do health checks
and why, provide guarantees, work with Vets. who send
interested parties
to us. I have been
reading People for
a good 30 yrs., can't re-call any
article about breeding dogs, now,
this 1st was the wrong way to go about it! Let's get
a review from the
other side!
Perhaps the young entrepreneurs and their mother should spend a week volunteering at a shelter with the designer "pets" that they are so happy to be making money from and are not at all being responsible for. Shame on People magazine for promoting the people in this story as heros. What a disgrace! I will not be renewing my subscription.
Wake Up! How can you not see that this is a VERY bad business! Who is responsible for including this teen in your article? Good grief, it does not take a rocket scientist (ethical editor?) to see that he is a puppy miller! Please retract your promotion of this particular teen.
How nice to glorify the making of money off the suffering of another living creature. These are LIVE animals this kid is selling not beanie babies. Wake up People Mag. Why not glorify cock fighting and bear baiting while you're at it!
We will always have homeless pets and overpopulation as long as this is encouraged and glorified. i have always been an avid reader of this magazine but will stop as long as industries like this are glorified. Maybe you should do a story on a young person working with an animal shelter instead.
OUr family owned a puppy who came from a puppy mill when we were younger - she was a beautiful dog but was overbred and had serious behavioral issues. Please do not encourage irresponsible behavior. I'm sure there are alot of animal lovers among your readers.
I was appalled when I saw this article in People. A nationally known magazine such as this should be promoting breed rescue or animal shelters, not the pond scum who exploit thier dogs and breed them until it is physically impossible, who don't worry about illnesses or breed defects that can (and do) cause major heartbreak to the poor pup's new owner, pain on the part of the new pup, and cost a lot to fix if it's a fixable condition. I can't say I'll be reading People again in the future, unless they'd care to write a new article with some decent research on the other side of this story :(
The premise of cuddlypuppy.com is repugnant. I am disgusted that People Magazine would promote this, as if it were a good thing! This kid needs a lesson in morality, not a pat on the back for selling yet more unhealthy puppies to unsuspecting people.
This is such a bad idea for so many reasons. First the deliberate breding of animals designed to not be the most healthy or stable. Second, the overpopulation of unwanted animals. And third, the irresponsible placement of animals over the internet.
ANYONE WHO KNOWS WHERE ONE OF THESE THINGS EXISTS AND CARES ABOUT ANIMALS HAS TO DO THE RIGHT THING AND REPORT IT TO THE AUTHORITIES OR THE MEDIA WHO CAN EXPOSE THEM FOR WHAT THEY REALLY ARE. GREED MACHINES.
Shame on People magazine for doing a story on something like this.
Thousands of wonderful dogs and cats are loosing their lives everyday. Why because of breeders like this.
Why not follow the life of one of these "Wonderful pups or kittens and see just where their life ends. And the tip of a needle or in some gas chambers somewhere. How terrible.
You should be ashamed of running a story which obviously promotes irresponsible breeding of puppies. There is already far too much of this going on. Rather than being lauded through your article for teen entrepreneurship, this teen and his parents need to be educated regarding the irresponsiblity of their endeavor.
I am so disgusted. I have always read People for the information but I will not read it again. After I went to the site of this little boy who is selling these puppies I am sick for a couple of reason, he lives only about 6 hrs from me, he is 16 and he has no idea of what the breeding of dogs mean, he is breeding different dogs together, there is nothing saying regsitered, and the prices on these dogs. I cant believe that People has stepped to this low. I really believe that people needs to dedicate a whole issue to the rescuing of puppies from puppy mills and from being abused.
Not only is it deplorable that People magazine is applauding this child, but the fact that the mother is teaching her child to make money off the 'backs' of innocent animals needs to re-evaluate her personal values system! I hope that People pays attention to this petition and acts promptly and responsibly.
I would have thought that a magazine as reputable as People would have more sense than to promote the business of puppy mills... on-line.. and to children, of all people. Shame on you.
Shame on you and your editor for allowing your article to make print. Did you happen to know that millions of dogs and cats are euthanized every year because there is not a home for them? This article only hides the fact about where their pets really come from. Unless you buy your pet from a reputable breeder you only allow back-yard breeders and puppy-mills to continue to mass produce poorly bred animals. Most of these animals never feel the grass on their feet, wind blow across their face or get to play; the only human contact they have is when someone throws food at them to eat and that is far and few between feedings too. These animals have to endure living in feces and urine soak surounding with usually only wire flooring.
There are thousands of animal shelters, humane societies and rescue groups across our country that need to find good, responsible, loving homes for the animals we take in to our care.
Please consider writing an article about finding homes for homeless animals.
I am a member of Dachshund Rescue of North America (www.drna.org) and would be happy to help you in this endeavor.
Thank you.
The article itself is an atrocity as the writer did not research it enough. Had the writer known the horrors of puppy mills, he might have taken a new slant on it. A FOLLOW-UP ARTICLE ON PUPPY MILLS IS A "MUST" FOR THIS MAGAZINE!
I am CERTAIN that you were not aware of the horrendous suffering of the dogs who are repeatedly used to build the "stock" of people who sell live stock (in this case, puppies). And I am certain that you are not aware of the HUGE number of puppies that end up dying in shelters because their buyers didn't properly research the breed, bought puppies who were not from sound genetic backgrounds, did not have sound temperaments, and who didn't end up being just like Lassie. Thousands and thousands and thousands of such terrible, sad stories.
How doubly sad that someone who makes money by perpetuating this cycle should be cited as an exemplar.
Please, please....for the sake of the millions of pets who die in shelters; for the sake of the people who DONATE heart, dollars, and time to help those animals; and for the people who become at risk for a bite from an ill-bred dog....won't you do something to recant your championing of this young man's business?
My sincere thanks for your consideration,
Marti Wiseman

Please do the right thing & publish a story that tells the rest of the story -- how many of these animals end up in rescue organizations & shelters. If you want a good story, try publishing one about the young people who assist in finding homes for rescue & shelter animals -- they volunteer their time!!!
When people purchase a dog from irresponsible breeders, like are being promoted in the article, one more shelter dog dies. For every puppy they sell a less fortunate one gets the needle. Reputable breeders see to it that the pups they produce are returned to them if the buyers can't keep them. These puppymillers do not care what happens to the pups after the money is in hand.
Those of us that work in rescue try to save as many as we can and it's never enough. There's just so many unwanted pets out there, we don't need more.
Before you endorse such activity, you should consider the number of unwanted dogs that are killed each and every day. Better still, visit a humane society and watch some of these poor animals being put to death - then, perhaps, your perspective would change. I volunteer for a dog rescue organisation, and thus get to see the results of such activities first-hand. Instead of condoning this "entrepreneur", you should be pointing out the horrors he is perpetuating.
No responsible business would sell puppies in this way. This young man is contributing to the problem of pet overpopulation, and the suffering and exploitation of dogs in puppy mills and shelters.
Why don't you run an article on the people who work tirelessly to save these poor animals -while your at it discuss what the dogs who are bred go through to have the cuddly puppies who will then be put down because all of the sudden they are not as cuddly.
Puppymills are a horrible travesty. Having rescued many dogs, and many from puppymill busts, the conditions the dogs are subjected to, and the lack of humane care is cruel and irresponsible. Awareness of the realities of puppymills needs to be promoted. A cover story on rescue groups and the real story behind puppymills is very much needed.
Much more research should have been done into 'Puppymills' before this was written - it is deplorable. And you're helping this young brag about the fact that he is only in it for money - what about the welfare of the puppies?
Shame on People Magazine! I will never read your magazine again. Selling puppies and animals for the sake of making money is horrible and careless. I would suggest that People Magazine spend some time at a humane shelter or the SPCA. They will see the dogs that this child and his mother have sold.
We do not need more backyard breeders and puppy mills. Communities are overrun with homeless animals, who suffer before they are euthanized because their are not enough homes to take these animals in.
I am REALLY disappointed to see your widely-read magazine advocating the exploitation of puppies as a "profitable" venture. There are THOUSANDS of dogs euthanised daily, thanks in part to just such "entrepreneurs". I certainly hope you will give equal space to rescue organizations and print "their side of the story."
PLEASE publish a follow-up article showing the horrors of puppy mills. Your previous story was completely shabby "journalism" and you have a responsibility to show things as they truly are. Disgusting.
I'm really disappointed that you would be so irresponsible! To feature a teenage
boy who is selling puppies on the internet! Aren't any of you loved by a pet and are loved unconditionally in return? Responsible breeders aren't going to sell to a business like that so that leaves irresponsible breeders or puppy mills and guess who suffers.... These animals are living creatures who suffer terribly because people see them as nothing more than an opportunity to make money.
You owe those puppies an article that shows what kind of horrors they come from and what people should do to adopt and care for a pet responsibly.
I look forward to seeing that article and if I don't see it soon I certainly don't see me renewing my subscription.
i HAVE A RESCUED FEMALE IN MY HOME. sHE HAD OVER 50 PUPPIES IN HER 3 YEARS LIVING IN A CAGE TOO SMALL TO STAND UP IN. sHE HAD BEEN DE-BARKED WITH A PIPE SHOVED DOWN HER THROAT TO RIP OUT HER VOCAL CORDS! YES, I AM AGAINST PUPPY-MILLS. THE MAN WHO DID THIS IS OUT DOING IT AGAIN BECAUSE HE ABANDONED THE PUPPY MILL IN IOWA. I WOULD WELCOME ANYONE FROM THE PRESS WHO WOULD LIKE TO WRITE AN HONEST STORY ABOUT WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THE REALITY OF A PUPPY MILL. NOT A CUTSIE STORY ABOUT A BOY SELLING PUPPIES WHO CAN'T EVEN CLAIM HE TAKES GOOD CARE OF THEM! TELL THIS BOY TO GET A REAL JOB!
Shame on Timothy and you. Puppy mills are horrible places for dogs and you just promoted the torutre of beautiful animals. You should have been more responsible in the research of this topic instead of perpetuating harm to our best friends.
What a loose cannon your magazine is, publishing a story that will have severe far-reaching effects on small puppies. My family has been active in rescuing the poor little creatures that result from this kind of situation - just push them out and make a lot of money - who cares about the "product"! I wish you would see some of these animals that have been pushed around and been given up on. If you want a dog, there are literally MILIONS of them in the shelters across the US that are BEGGING for even a half-way-decent home, instead of euthanization. Don't bring more of them into the world just to make a buck. What kind of lessons is this mother teaching her son? That nothing matters but the almighty dollar! Why doesn't she encourage him to go work for a shelter or pound every weekend to see what kind of situations he's been promoting - and why doesn't she do the same? I don't ever want to read your magazine again. You should see past the headlines instead of encouraging situations like this.
I doubt it would be legal for me to truely express my feeling regarding puppy mills and their owners. Therefore, I simply state, disgust and sadness over these horrible establishments!
I am embarrassed to be associated with a culture that both condones and advertises these actions. People magazine should have thought a little harder before printing that story. I think it's great this kid has the initiative, but his mother should have suggested a more humane business, like auctioning off tickets to club baby seals. If there are no laws to regulate this, I would hope the public outrage will be enough.
Unbelievable! Your magazine should be looking into these things better. This youth is NOT helping the situation..he is additing to it.... And by all means let's glorify it and his mother for helping him do so. Come On - Print something that helps the situation not promotes it!
