I am shocked at the lowest common denominator approach to recent decisions at the CBC. I don't object to rock or even pop on CBC, but the randomly chosen, terrible music, and the insipid commentary, causes me great despair. I don't recognize my beloved CBC.
I support this petition.
We had the same problem last year with the french
Chaine culurelle of Radio-Canada.

I support this petition. While the concept of Freestyle is wretched, the "non-Canadian-nes s" of CBC has been ongoing for years. Every day Radio 2 broadcasts the fluffiest of standard rep "classics", crossover classicalpop, and other drivel. The CBC may be able to hide behind MAPL rules, but has really only observes the APL.

Presumably CBC management has made these programming changes in order to create a more relevant broadcaster, to serve a greater number of listeners whose tax dollar, afterall, pays for the service. But they neglect 1) excellence, the potential of listeners, and the need for an alternative to everything else out there; 2) the need to serve the creative community, not only so that that community has an outlet but so that it remains connected; 3) the inevitable result of their actions -- that politicians will look at the commercial content, wonder why they're paying for something that can compete for advertising dollars and pull funding altogether. And with this kind of programming, of course, it won't really matter.
Public broadcasting, either radio or television, shouldn't have to pay for itself -- its managers should not confuse public service and relevance with ratings. It should present the best that can be created in the medium and represent the human and creative diversity of the country. It is a public necessity, like roads, the post office (forgetting the part that's been privatized) all the things that glue the country together.
It seems that CBC management either doesn't believe in public broadcasting, or has lost heart in the struggle to defend the principle against the narrow understanding of politicians. These people, afterall, live by ratings -- for them public opinion polls and elections. Excellence and qualities opposed to quantification will be foreign if not antithetical to them.
So, I guess we do what we're doing, oppose the changes and hope that this adds a little starch to the spine of our managers.
I fully support this petition and lament that it is necessary. As a one-time devoted listener from south of the border, I am appalled by the apparent shift in CBC's focus and its neglect in upholding the ideals of its mandate.
Sadly, CBC management has obviously lost its sense of responsibility and its commitment to offering profound, insightful, provocative, or most importantly, distinctive, content. What I learned about Canada and its unique culture, I once learned from the CBC, but I now learn elsewhere, if at all. After all, so much of the CBC is a duplicate of generic broadcast offerings in the USA, which I equally ignore.
I hope that this course will change and that the CBC will realise the importance of its position as Canada's national broadcaster. It should not abuse its position by seeking an artificial or supposed audience which may very well not exist. No broadcaster could appeal to every listener at all hours, but the CBC's intended direction is in error and will prevent Canadians, as well as foreigners who listen from abroad, from appreciating the unique culture that has always flourished in Canada. Is it CBC's intent to give internal and external listeners that the "distinctively Candian" content of your mandate is in fact recycled, quite often outdated, popular music, the bulk of it from outside Canada's shores?
I support this petition.
As a composer, I hope that the CBC seriously reconsiders their recent actions. They must represent the collective artistic individualism that makes this country what it is.
As an educator, I cannot stress enough how the current CBC motives are destroying the individuality of our country's youth and future artists.
I support this petition.
PLease return the CBC to something which is interesting and relevant. Believe it or not, there are people who actualy want stimulation in the afternoon from the radio, not the blanket of shlop-pop and meaningless chatter which is being dished out now.
You are loosing this listener.
I think it patently absurd that a public broadcaster would choose to focus on commercial entertainment. Their reason for existence since the beginning has been to provide a cultural voice for the nation, providing airtime for creators who are not in the mainstream of popular culture.
The stark reality is that this move puts more broadcast royalties into the pockets of Elton John and Madonna, and takes away yet another opportunity for Canadian cultural artists to earn those royalties.
The necessity of a forum that fosters growth and the appreciation of a national identity is being, not overlooked, but, completely disregarded here. I support this petition.
I support this petition. Further more I detest CBC management's disinginuousness and banal assumptions about what their listeners want to hear. The people who want to hear pop, rock, country, ethnic and jazz have many stations to choose from. I have only one and that one is quickly becoming cheap, tacky and tawdry.
My feeling is, that if I want to listen to Madonna, Elton John, et. al, I'd rather tune into another station because there are thousands of radio stations that play that stuff, both on the airwaves and online.
I specifically tune into CBC, because I want to tap into Canadian content and culture. I feel what you've done is made the radio equivalent of a bad generic version of vanilla ice cream. You tell me I'll like it because I sometimes like vanilla, but really it's a waffle cone a snowball in it. There's just not much flavour to it, and the chocolate you fed us before was much tastier.
I support this petition.
It is tragic that while the CBC could do so much to further musical culture by leading, educating and nurturing, it prefers to follow the poorest manifestations of 21st century commercialism.
I support this petition. This is very important and we can't give up on this issue. The CBC has to be reminded of what its role is in Canadian broadcasting.
I support this petition wholeheartedly; the only people likely to appreciate the CBC's new programming already have countless radio stations to feed them a non-stop supply of generic pop and lobotomized programs.
I support this petition. CBC has been a lifeline for 45 years for us. Our fear is not of change, but of weakening the cultural integrity of public broadcasting.
Background listening is for commercial gain not for publicly supported radio.
I support this petition, not because I agree with it, but because it is obviously the "cool" thing for self-styled artistic intellectuals to do. Nobody has ever complained about the pop-culture orientation of DNTO, and nothing like the National Playlist has ever appeared on commercial radio. Insipid hosts like those on Freestyle and a certain Ms. Rogers are a far greater threat to Radio One than the occasional popular song.
I support this petition. As a Canadian-born performing artist, experiencing the gradual shut down of the CBC's unique coast to coast platform for Canadian talent has been a tragedy.
I support this petition. The recent devolution of CBC Radio towards mainstream pop programming is in complete contradiction to its role and purpose in the Canadian cultural landscape.
I support this petition. The national playlist is a mess.
The CBC makes no effort to drill down to the truly great music that is happening in this country. It is impossible to get anything played on CBC that is original, accessible and
outside genre fascism . There is where the next music resides. An effort in this direction would go a long way towards the CBC fullfilling it's mandate as a national voice.
