There are many stations that feature mainstream music and few that feature new composers. It is a travesty to simply sell out in order to attract a few more listeners.
I support this petition. The argument that this is the only way to keep our young people engaged is faulty. Elders are supposed to set the example not follow the trend.
I support this petition. There's enough pop culture pap out there already; let's have some stuff that challeneges our brains. If I wanted to listen to this stuff, I'd change channels. Give me material that won't tempt me to change the channel.
I support this petition. Please don't dumb down the CBC. During the lockout it was impossible to find anything else out there that was worth listening to.
I support this petition. I don't like the new programming on the CBC it brings less diversity to the Canadian airwaves. I can find what the CBC now hopes to offer on dozens of commercial stations. If this is the format of the future the CBC is formatting itself out of relevance.
If we're going to give up on public radio, we might as well give up on this whole enterprise called 'Canada'. It was fun while it lasted... C'mon! Time for a leadership review at the CBC - the present guard is clearly out of their depth.
I of course support this petition.
I support this petition. The playlist for Freestyle occasionally includes some good independent Canadian artists, but I'll never listen because it is (bizarrely) mixed in with syrupy light top 40 tunes the likes of which I hear in the public address system at the mall. That won't attract audiences for each of these "streams" of music, or bring in the young folks, it will repel them both. CBC has a responsibility to be alternative and Canadian. Live up to it!!
I support this petition.
The Commercialization of the French Radio Network last year (2004) has been a complete catastrophe. It has meant the end of the only "cultural broadcaster" which could -somehow modestly- hold to what most European radios have to offer. The death of "La Chaîne culturelle" (equivalent to Radio Two) is one of the most severe step taken by Radio-Canada towards an eradication of "non-strictly-com mercial" culture. We fear very much in Montreal that CBC is the next target. First Radio One gets watered down; then Radio Two disapears... I can only hope that the CBC public reacts more violently than Radio-Canada's public did last year... I am ashamed that French-speaking Canadians let the dismantling of La Chaîne culturelle happen.
CBC management has deceptively suggested that the problem with the programming in question isn't that of us don't like it. That is beside the point. A mediocre duplication of commercial radio is a gross misuse of public funds. The CBC has a duty to present an alternative.
I support this petition, however I also appreciate change for the better. The CBC could use a little freshening up but I'm curious, is it undergoing a radio-canada style rebranding? If so, would the CBC consider loaning contemporary composers some dough for our own satelite radio station? We're good for it.
