I support this petition. The audience that the CBC seems to be attempting to attract with the change in format never listened to the CBC and is unlikely to start. On the other hand, thoughtful, intelligent, well educated people(a large segment of the Canadian public) have no alternative. Please do not let the CBC decend into the vulgarity that is currently pervasive in our culture. Rather, let it continue to be a vanguard against mediocrity.
CBC BUBBLEGUM GETTING STUCK IN YOUR TEETH???
WHY NOT TRY THESE ALTERNATIVES:
Jazz FM 91
CIUT 89.5 FM (U of T)
CFMX 96.3 FM Classical
CHRY 105.5 FM (York U)
CKLN 88.1 FM (Ryerson)
AM 740 (some jazz/ oldies)
WNED AM 970 (US public radio, some BBC)
I support this petition. Little else connects this country! Kill the CBC with an abundance of sleepy music and Canada will continue to only dream about forming a significant sense of self.
What are you - NUTS???? How can you even consider messing with our CBC Radio One format?? Do you REALLY believe we need another Top 40 Radio Station in Canada?!! Where will I tune in to hear the finest in Canadian Jazz and Classical, or to listen to World music?? The CBC needs to give its head a shake - don't mess with the people's FM institution, because it's a mighty slippery slope from there. My tax dollars better not be going to Top 40 Pop crap that hundreds of other stations are playing - you have a responsibility both to the musicians who sacrifice everything to remain true to their craft, AS WELL AS to the loyal listener who has invested a lifetime in supporting the CBC - confident that our ONE national radio station of the people will not betray us.
SHAME ON YOU for even considering it!!
I vociferously support this petition objecting to the proposed CBC programme changes!!
I support this petition. I supported the CBC workers during the lockout, and am totally appalled at the programming change on CBC Radio 1 - I keep switching back to see if this trashy programming has changed, but am dismayed to find it still broadcasting this inadequate, insulting drivel.

I support this petition.PM programming was better during the lockout. After 30 years of listening to noon and early PM programming on CBC 1,I had to switch. Cannot stand the two airheads on Freestyle and the music they play
When I lived ofr a few years in the UK, I remember people saying that BBC was a rite of passage - young people listen to pop stations, but when they 'grow up' and start taking an interest in more serious matters - say around the age of 30 - they switch to BBC. I feel the same about CBC. It should not be catering to the younger age groups - but to the adult citizens of Canadian society. After all, no-one else does.
I support this petition. And CBC management has lost me as a listener with the current programming. I no longer listen from 10-12 or 2-4. And never on Saturday unless CBC Radio 2 and the opera in the afternoon.
I support this petition. At the very least, recycled information programming from the BBC or elsewhere would be preferrable to the new dreck in the afternoon.
I support this petition. When we first moved to Canada we knew little about the culture or life of our new home. Thanks to CBC radio we learned and felt connected from the Atlantic ocean (where we lived ) to the Pacific. I dont need or want more "bubble-gum" programming so please listen to us. Thank you
I support this petition. I have been disappointed listening to "Freestyle". I find that it lacks the intelligence that I have come to love and respect from CBC. Our public radio should be streching the minds of its listeners not dumbing them down.
I support this petition.
The producers of entertainment shows on Radio One should be required to provide attractive and substantial, contemporary programming with our public dollars. Many manage it every day.
Take some comfort in the fact that all these critical opinions are driven by standards set and met by earlier programmers at CBC.
I have been a listener of CBC Radio for most of my life. I found it bad when they separated it into Radio One and Two. I enjoy the news programs and classical radio. There has been a steady increase in popular music since then, and Freestyle takes the cake. I despise the show and turn it off the moment it comes on. If they keep introducing shows like this, I will be listening to less and less of CBC broadcasting. If I want to listen to popular music and culture there are hundreds of other stations to listen to, many of which have much more local content than CBC does.
I support this petition.
I'm a confirmed listener to Radio Two and Radio Canada's Espace Musique; thanks for the tip--I'll avoid Radio One with pleasure & hope that programmers will start listening to listeners who want Canadian content. (There are lots of great Canadian "top 40s" anyway, so drop the Madonna thing!)
I support this petition.
Oh Come on! What is with this rash of policies watering down our culture and making us more Americanlike? Can we please stop trying to be as stupid as they are to make them happier with us! What are we teenage girls?
Please keep Canadian standards up to a high standard and not just play top 40 pulp. we've got lots of that already thanks.
I support this petition. The CBC currently provides high quality commercial-free programming that covers a very wide range of subjects from politics to sports. Mainstream pop music and culture can be had on many other stations.
I support this petition. CBC radio provides quality, solid, balanced programming. Independence from advertising, provides security from dependence on advertisers and their special interests.
I support this petition.
What is going on? C.B.C. is far too important to the unity, and cultural well being of this country to let it become a venue for the vapid, 'lite" programmimg of shows like "Free Style" or "the National Playlist".
I miss the thoughtful and thought provoking C.B.C. and for the first time in my life, I find myself turning my radio off.
I support this petition because we need a dedicated "classical" station. In Canada. I recall an application for a classical station in Vancouver that was turned down. Instead we got another rap/world music mix station. If the CRTC won't grant a license for a new classical station keep the CBC as our classical source.
I support this petition. There is a proliferation of zero content shows on the CBC now - Freestyle being the best example. They essentially play music while the hosts talk about stuff that they found on the internet. Please focus on the content based news and information type shows like the Arts Today, As it Happens, The Current, Tapestry, Ideas etc. There is a lot of great stuff still on the CBC. Please keep it great.
I support this petition.
Unfortunately there is little to listen to on CBC anymore. What happened to intelligent interviews, reports, discussions. Freestyle is terrible and almost worst than what it replaced from 2:00Pm to 3:30pm. CBC used to be different now it is becoming more and more like any other commercial station. As a taxpayer I resent paying for it. Whose decision was it to include so much popular music, not only at 11:30am and from 1:00pm to 3:00pm but inserted in most other programs too? Goodness me what happened to the CBC?
Very sad.
I support this petition.
The C.B.C. should leave "easy listening" radio to the commercial sector, and stick to informative, educational, and challenging, programming.
I support this petition.I turn CBC off at 10a.m. The afternoon programme is vapid music bland copy unsophisticated. What happened? Have discovered John Moore since the strike...CRTC Even Andie Barrie has lost his punch.
What happened to you?
I support this petition.
While Kate Taylor may have a point about the CBC playing popular music, it seems like it has gone overboard. I do not understand why CBC Radio should be funded by the public for the playing of popular music in large amounts; there are many commercial stations that undertake that role.
I support this petition. For commercial radio, we could turn to commercial radio stations. Better to have a number of truly engaged listeners than many having aural wallpaper. Wake up - you are going to drive away your dedicated listeners.
I support this petition. Why must the CBC Radio program planners constantly turn their backs on the demographic that listens to them? What is wrong with appealing to an older, educated audience who wants thoughtful, informative and enriching radio? Why must we listen to hours of pop trash when the private sector already serves this need very well? Freesytle on Radio One is a case in point. Go is another example of this sort of mindless pop trash. Ditto the National Playlist. It's O.K. not to be cool all the time. btw, programming that supports inter-generational insight such as D.N.T.O. should be maintained. But some balance please. I am not asking for 24/7 Ideas, but a bit less pop culture would better serve your current listening audience.
I support this petition. CBC One has been my constant daytime companion for over 15 years, always interesting & informative. The university of the air. I now have large periods of quiet, as I shut it off when Freestyle and the Playlist come on. Please listen to us, you're faithful supporters and stop the popular music.
I support this petition. I am a proud Canadian, having immigrated to this country. I learned about Canadian culture, its many people, its music, songs, and whatever, by listening to CBC radio. Please do not dilute the Canadian conteny of the CBC Radio One.
I support this petition. When I came to Canada in 1975, CBC radio was my window on the new country. I listened to CBC AM for news and for interesting information about the place to which I had moved. I listened to CBC FM for music.
Sadly, both services have deteriorated to the point that I rarely bother anymore. Dumb chit-chat and bad music on Radio One don't interest me, and although I listen to an assortment of musical styles, hosts trying hard to be "personalities" while mixing country and western, lounge "jazz" and who knows what else into their main stream classical programs on Radio Two leave me cold.
That the national network now aspires to the status of dentist office muzak is a truly sad state of affairs. CBC will not attract young audiences by giving them drivel. They can, however, attract younger listeners who want something other than commerecial radio schlock by giving them quality information and music programming.
When I moved here, I was in my mid-twenties, an age group CBC seems anxious to attract. Were I moving here now, the present incarnation of the CBC probably wouldn't rate a second listen.
I support this petition. Although I agree in principle that the CBC should support Canadian musical talent in all styles of music, I find that I simply cannot bear to listen for any length of time to most of the CBC AM programs. Between my lifelong aversion to the sound of electric guitar and drums and a strong gagging impulse when faced with self-consciously perky program hosts, I am finding that I am lucky to be able to stay tuned to CBC for more than 10 minutes at a time.
I support this petition. It is distressing that the CBC wants to target an audience that is "captive" (e.g. in a dentist's chair, at the office etc.) rather than one free to choose what it wants to listen to. Taste in music is as unique as taste in art, cars, food, what have you. Being forced to listen to music I do not like is excruciating.
Actually, I think the stated rationale for the change is a cover-up for something else. I suspect that the newer programming is cheaper to produce; it certainly sounds that way.
I have listened to CBC (mostly radio two) for decades, especially on the clock radio in the morning. But, sadly, I recently abandoned it when a local "dumbed down" classical music programme (Music to Go) replaced programming of a much higher calibre.
I have read every single comment in this petition. CBC listeners are wonderfully articulate, devoted, loyal and knowledgeable. I am not sure that the people at the CBC making these recent programming decisions are of the same cloth. They appear to be out of touch with their listeners and seem to think that feeding hamburgers to people with finer tastes is quite OK.
I agree particularly with several other people who talked about mature programming that provides examples of excellence that youth can discover and grow into.
I support this petition.Until the lock out this summer, I never found it necessary to try other commercial radio stations. Now I frequently have to turn the dial or turn the radio off as the drivel/unfortunate music choices provide no intellectual or artistic stimulation. Please give us back something to listen that is worthwhile. In your attempt to gain new/younger listeners you are losing too many of us. The new style of programming (i.e.,Freestyle) can be found on other stations...Please return to the unique and interesting, informative Canadian content of yore.
I support this petition. I especially miss hearing CBC Radio 2 broadcasts of Canadian Orchestras. They seem to be very rare these days. We need to support Canadian Orchestras!
I support this petition.
Our radio has been tuned to CBC since the early 1960's but now when the national playlist comes on, the radio goes off. What a shame! During the recent lockout, we tried other stations but couldn't stand them. Why does the CBC emulate mediocrity? We deserve better.
I apbsolutely support this petition. I don't want to listen to pop music & inane chit-chat in the dentist's chair or anywhere else. CBC needs to listen to what its' listeners are saying, not what they claim we say we want. In other words - if it's not broken, don't fix it. CBC Radio used to be one of the best in the world. Now it's an embarassment.
I support this petition. I am most disappointed in the directions CBC has taken. Why on earth does the CBC want to emulate other radio stations. Is it to garner more listeners. Of course it is! Why? just provide quality. Advertise more effectively regarding programming and the people will come!
And as for the presenters on Radio 2, please discourage all the small talk and let's have the music...good music!
