I don't care for the idea of my taxes being used to duplicate material that private corporations fully fund on other stations. I listen to CBC to hear Canadian content.
I support this petition in a certain sense. The fact that CBC plays mainly pop music is a bit disturbing. That said, so is the fact that Canadians are attempting to ban a certain type of music from this radio station. Do all you petitioners not see that you are no better than the people that wanted to ban jazz when it first came out? No better than those who wanted to ban rock when it first came out? Yes, the CBC should play classical, but no, the CBC shouldnt be forced to not play pop. We do need to maintain our culture in this country, and perhaps playing classical music is one way to achieve this, but to ban a certain type of music so that another can be played is contradictory in itself.
p.s. I still think classical music should be played on the CBC.
CBC Radio 1 and 2 are the only consistent havens on the radio dial to find intelligent, Canadian-focused music and discussion. CBC management has effectively abaondoned the CBC's mandate when it comes to television. Please don't make the same mistake with CBC Radio.
I support this petition. I am a music student, attending Queen's University, and I love the diversity that CBC Radio has to offer. I would be extremely disappointed if CBC were to change its programming.
I deplore the changes to CBC AM programming. I cannot turn to this station until early evening due to the preponderance of banal pop offerings, most of which are non-Canadian in origin.I therefore support this petition wholeheartedly.
The CBC will never successfully outmanoeuver the private sector in the top 40 market - to achieve the goal of expanding listenership it must build style around substance... The only reason to tune into the CBC remains the unique character of its programming, musically and otherwise. Don't blow this! Build bridges across populations and genres: don't pose as something you can't possibly be. Just be a reminder, in a time when it seems hard to remember, how great it is to be Canadian. If we can't define or construct Canadian identity, at least give the country you claim to serve one of Walter Benjamin's "Imagined Communities" and let the minds and hearts of Canadians be proud.
I support this petition.
Arts in Canada are in a sorry enough state. Now it seems Canadian classical musicians and composers are becoming even more marginalized by the one vehicle that at least seemed to give us a voice.
I support this petition wholeheartedly. Radio in Toronto has been in a steady decline since the late '70s. CBC is (was?) one of the last refuges from commercialism, and since I've all but given up on television there's not a lot left for hearing about the new and innovative in the arts.
I support this petition. CBC is the one place we can go to escape the pulp of the commercial, mainstream stations. It should be counted on to provide good Canadian music and information to broaden, challenge, inspire and inform the Canadian outlook. Canadian composers and performers should be headlined above all others, as CBC is our national stage.
I support this petition. I listen to the CBC as an alternative to all the mainstream pop radio. Since the CBC is reverting to pop, where is my alternative to be found?
I listened to the CBC for intelligent shows you couldn't hear anywhere else. Now, not only do they feature the same top-40 stuff you hear everywhere else, they do it badly. CBC, don't try to be hip--you just arent't.
I support this petition.
I would go further and hope that the CBC would play a greater proportion of Canadian MUSIC for its Canadian content, not just Canadian performers' recorded versions of the same few well-known pieces of old classical music.
I support this petition. Canadians need an alternative to American radio. A station that will play Canadian musicians - that will play music being written and made in Canada. And another thing? What is this about Medicare Smedicare? Why promote this and not the Tommy Douglas Biography????????? We need all the points of views being broadcast on the national radio - and we need an opportunity to hear from all sides!
I support this petition. This disease has infected Radio Two. The final hour of 13 December broadcast of Hear's To You is a good example. CBC management apparently considers Vera Lynn, Eric Rogers, Jimmy Durante, Bing Crosby, Robert Farnon and Victor Borge to be NEW. At least the hour ended with JS Bach who although not new is at least classical.
