I think it's in Canada's best interests to keep the music content on Radio One connected firmly to Canadian culture; as one of many American listeners who avidly enjoys CBC Radio One on the Internet it's important to have a viable North American-oriented alternative to the Crass Commmercial American Radio Music mentality, both here on the web and out on the airwaves too.
There is plenty of wonderful and commercially succesful pop music out there these days--it does not need the CBC, nor does it need the embarassment of competition for government funding.
The CBC is in relentless retreat from many of its mandated responsibilities. It no longer does an adequate job of reflecting this country to itself in all its diversity
I cannot believe that the CBC can't do better than the pap that is their "wonderful" new show, Freestyle. Who thought this up? If we want this kind of programming, we can go to any number of commercial stations. The CBC should be better than this. What's next, commercials?
I support this petition. I feel it is very important for the CBC to adhere to it's listed mandate from the Broadcasting Act of 1991. There is plenty of room to improve the CBC without commercializing it.
There is absolutely NO REASON why public money should be used for promoting and or supporting established, Amercian artists. Further more, if I wanted to listen to pop (or ANY kind of music for that matter)I would switch to an FM station. I listen to CBC Radio 1 exclusively for the stories and excellent reporting. You can't get that anywhere else - unlike the pop music - which is EVERYWHERE!
Radio is becoming a nasty oligopoly, where unconventional and new music have little chance of being broadcasted. CBC is a great oppurtunity for musicians who don't make concessions to the top 40. These artists deserve to be heard and they deserve somebody to broadcast them.
I support this petition.
It is absurd for public money and our national radio to be pursuing an audience that ought to be in school during the very time when you are filling the airwaves with teen-age palaver and trivial nonsense about pop tunes. The people for whom that type of programming is sufficient are already listening to it, done much better, on commercial radio stations. Stop trying to dig even further down into the bottom of the barrel and inspire us, young and old alike, with something provocative, stimulating and challenging.
There are enough other stations on the airwaves where I could listen to pop music if I so desired. Please keep the CBC filled with the great music they have been dedicated to for so long.
I support this petition. As a Canadian Composer currently studying in the States I have realized the importance of having a voice that is distinctively Canadian. This system of support for Canadian artists working in a wide range of styles is necessary to maintaining a strong nationalist voice on the world stage. This is something that Canada must continue to pursue.
I support this petition. CBC Radio (both 1 & 2) is a constant in my life. There are few other radio stations with the significant thought provoking feature programs & news. Being a classical music lover, I appreciate the availablility of this music and, also, recognize that one can hear off-the-beaten-track pop, folk, jazz and other music on CBC. Kudos to CBC and long may the radio signals wave!
I listen to the CBC for intelligent programming on: current event; national and local news; Sheila Rogers and The Current. If I wished to listen to pop music, I would turn to another station. As it is, I no longer listen to CBC in the afternoon while Freestyle is on.
I support this petition. The thing I love about CBC is knowing I can listen to some intelligent talk radio for a change and NOT music and screaming idiots all the time. Let the top 40 stations fill the elevators and doctor's offices so we can have something good to listen to in the car.
Where else but on Freestyle could I learn all about disposable socks AND have Bryan Adams stir my soul in the same hour? Great to see my tax dollars at work.
I support this petition. While I support Canadian music of all genres I don't think that the mothercorp needs to reinforce popular, non-Canadian artists who receive airplay via commercial broadcasters. Let's support Canadian songwriters, composers and artists.
