While a fair portion of Canadian culture is "Pop" there is ample availibility of that type of programming on comercial radio. It is the responsibility of the CBC to provide alternative programing that reflects the other aspects of Canadian culture.
As some people on Maplepost (email forum for folk music industry and interested supporters) wrote, the issue is the "dumbing down" - perhaps commercialization is not quite the word for it. We do not need CBC to be carrying pop music with inane chitchat.
I have listened to CBC for over 20 years, beginning as a young man in my 20's. I listen for insightful dialogue and factual information about Canada and the world. I do not listen for the music!!
CBC should be the prime national source for news and information important to Canadians. If they want to be a pop station instead, they might as well sell their bandwidth to Jack.
I support this petition. The CBC should not turn itself into elevator music. There are already stations doing that. A small amount of the current hits perhaps should be played but not at the expense of real Canadian content.
I support this petition. I have listened to the CBC faithfully for over 35 years. Oh, for the good old days of Peter, Barbara and their ilk. If you need a role model, follow the line of the BBC, not CHFI (which, while a fine station, is not a competitor of CBC). PromoGirl is an example of one of the programs that has to go. Further, there is so much exceptionally good Canadian music available, why are you so indiscriminate in your choices? So much of what you play is embarrassingly ghastly, reflecting poorly on Canada! Intelligent commentary is what I, and others, really enjoy.
I support this petition. CBC is (or at least was) the envy of the world, in terms of public broadcasting. It helps bring this country together. We violate the conditions of its mandate at our peril as a country.
I listen to 2 radio stations: CBC and a "cutting edge" pop rock station. I don't need 2 pop stations. I like to have my smart days, and dumb days, and be able to pick.
I'm 23 years old, and I love the CBC the way it is, particularly the excellent news/interviews/lectures/ commentaries. The idea that young people need bad pop music and 20 second soundbites to be entertained is a myth.
I support this petition and the CBC. I think It's very important to appeal top new audiences but not by pandering to their level.
there has to be a better way to let them know that CBC is a worthwhile source of entertainment and news. Commercial radio is dying due to its lack of foresight. Don't lower yourselves. You're much smarter than that. A University Education is mostly mandatory for CBC Employees. Don't forget about your roots.
Hilarious. I sign this petition and complain that the Playlist pushes iPods on everyone, then click on the "sign petition" button only to be bombarded with an iPod ad. Is there no end? I think iPods are okay but enough already!!!
Freestyle sucks but it has gotten better since the first show. My guess is a lot of criticism was heard. The National Playlist isn't a bad show. I think there's a healthy mix of Canadian/Non-Canadian, mainstream/ underground. I do think they should stop advertising iPods though and that is the unfortunate premise behind the show, it seems.
I support this petition.
Believe me, by going to mediocre music and dumbed down shows you do not gain new listeners, you lose your main base of listeners.
I support this petition.
I think "Freestyle" should "free itself" of CBC Radio entirely. This show is mostly crap and the not-so-subtle jibes from Kelly to her male (can't remember his name) co-host are just plain irritating. I want Sad Goat and Bill R back, along with a slew of programs that have disappeared over the years, starting 'way back with The Food Show at 8:30 on Sunday mornings.
Overall, let's get back to more commentary, please, and less commercial-style muzak.
I support this petition. Since its inception, the CBC has played the most
significant role in Canada in the development of many diverse aspects of our national culture and identity by allowing us to hear our own geographically separated voices. We have no other national forum for all but the most commercial components. Why is CBC television, as stated in the Broadcast Policy for Canada, sections "r, i & ii", required to provide programming that is "innovative and ... complementary to the programming provided for mass audiences" and "cater to tastes and interests not adequately provided for by the programming provided for mass audiences, and include programming devoted to culture and the arts" while this language is absent from clauses pertaining to radio? I imagine it was because CBC radio was already fulfilling that role at the time of the drafting of the Act. Who, in those days, could have imagined the current direction of the CBC administration?
CBC Radio-1 used to have dignity. Alas, that's gone due to your desperate and pathetic attempts to be hip, or whatever's your motivation. Now I tend to listen only to the classical and jazz content on Radio-2; Radio-1 has become virtually unlistenable.
C'mon CBC, bring it back - we'll be glad you did.
I support this petition. The CBC is no longer my first listening choice. There's a wealth of campus/community radio available to the discerning listeners. Some of it sucks but is rarely wimpy, unlike the recent programming changes at CBC Radio.
I support this petition. There are enough stations worldwide that air thoughless drivel. The CBC has always been an isand of higher listening and is something that should be preserved.
I support this petition. The best thing I can say about moving to Alberta recently, from Guelph, is that at least I can listen to alternative voices and topnotch Canadian and world music on listener-supported CKUA. CBC is losing me - listen up disgruntled CBC listeners - you can listen to CKUA online at CKUA.com
I support this petition.
I have written twice regarding this awful programme - inane chat between two announcer who obviously do not get along, terrible music.
Roundup was so funny, so Canadian, so good. PUt it back.
I support this petition. Radio 1 was always playing in my house growing up, and has exposed me to countless aspects of Canadian and international culture i would not have known otherwise.
I support this petition.
Rabinovitch should resign. He doesn't Please stop Promo Girl from doing any announcements about serious news or tragic stories. Her giggling is an insult to the people affected. It's real life, not some "ironic" ha-ha story.
I support this petition. And I support the CBC as a unique part of our cultural landscape. I would like to see programming that distinguishes the CBC from other radio. With the advent of satellite radio on its way (in fact, it's here) the CBC best carve out a niche for itself or apply the tax dollars to medicare.
I support this petition. Radio 1 has been an intelligent and entertaining source of information on Canadian politics and culture for me for many years. It's a shame to observe some of its originality being eroded.
I support this petition. Please revive CBC1 - there is a large and loyal following who have delighted in the intelligent talk of the CBC - I dont' think the youth will be coming to CBC for their music, but the youth do get older and many will tune into CBC for the talk - please bring it back!
