Special Ed is important in the lives of people with different abilities.
Without it students don't get a chance to aspire, dream, or compete.
They don't even get close to a level 'playing field'.

As an ITP student thinking of going into Educational interpreting this
would limit the opportunites for interpreters to work in the system. This
is not acceptable. ALL students need to have access to proper education. |

Pursuant to the IDEA and the Equal Protection Clause of our Constitution,
the Chicago Public School System has a duty to provide an equal education
to students with (legal) disabilities as students without disabilities.
CPS is failing its disabled students already. To further cut spending
would widen this gap between disabled and non-disabled students and further
subject CPS to increased civil rights claims. But beyond the legal
implications, it is morally the wrong thing to do. These are our kids.
Must we continually treat them as if they are a disposable commodity?
Disabled or otherwise. CPS students are the students in the greatest need
and the greatest potential. Re-evaluate your priorities! |

no more cuts. no more school closings. no more racial profiling. lets work
together to truly send a message to CPS, and those that have the structural
influence on this issue. Youth with disabilities and Deaf youth must
receive the necessary resources and support to effectively be educated to
their fullest ability. These cuts are unwarranted and are direct attack on
all of our youth and communities. AN INJURY TO ONE IS AN INJURY TO ALL.

Students with disabilities have the right to a decent education. The
education of kids with disabilities must not be held for ransom by budget
cuts. It it a disservice not only to the students, themselves, but to CPS
as well. |

Carolyn Nickols :
This is a shame considering MANY of CPS students receive some kind of
special ed.services. This cut, although needed to save money, is NOT the
answer. There are too many general ed. teachers who don't know what to
do with special ed. students in their classroom. CPS should cherish and
value their special ed. teachers/aides because they are very much needed.
This cut will be a HUGE diservice to CPS as a whole. |

As a retired high school teacher and longtime disabilities rights advocate,
I am absolutely appalled at these proposed cuts in Chicago. It is generally
understood that people with disabilities, severe and mild, comprise about
20% of the U.S. population. In a time when people are screaming about
rising health and welfare costs, we absolutely need to prepare our
youngsters with all the skills they need to become assets to their
communities. |

without the assistance and persistence of his special education teacher, we
would have been lost in the process. my son was enriched by supportive

they start with the administration? cut some of those salaries then come
