It saddens me to hear these allegations, especially for the innocent children and people who have nothing to do with this - I will pray that these disputes be resolved soon.
I am deeply confused by the notionn that a UN mission is involved in prepetrating violence on Haiti's poorest of the poor. There must be alternative ways to deal with this situationn. My prayers are with everyone. Keep the vision of non-violence alive!
The U.N. killing and injuring innocent children in Cite Soleil MUST END. Another way must be found immediately. Life is hard enough for these children and families without a "peace-keeping" force adding more violence & trauma.
I am ashamed that my country Canada was one of the countries ousting a legally elected Aristide thus leaving the poor once again as property of the wealthy
After the US military, aided by Canada and France, illegaly overthrew Haiti's elected government (which had a hard time governing Haiti, thanks to cutting the international funding it severely needed for its development), the UN should now be playing a role of supporting the return to democracy, all the while putting any military efforts to a peacekeeping mission.
A lot of the very gangs the MINUSTAH says it is targeting are sprouting in response to the joint MINUSTAH and Haiti National Police previous massive attacks that resulted in open massacres of pockets of the civil population.
If the UN massacres populations that seek to protect themselves for survival since the illegal Feb. 2004 US-backed coup, then how else could these populations interpret this, other than feeling it is a collective punishement for being poor and supporters of the only party that seemed to care for them (Lavalas)?
Dialogue with the Cité Soleil local population and NGOs is the only solution to this downward spiral of violence.
How outrageous that a peace-keeping force would attack Hatian citizens. This seriously underminds the integrity of the U.N. These kind of attacks must stop immediately and reparations must be made to the families of those killed, injured or whose homes were destroyed.
The MINUSTAH interventions in Cite Soleil have much too much 'collateral' damage. The UN needs to be much more open about these interventions and their consequences.
I pledge my full wholehearted support for the people of Haiti and stand in solidarity with them in their fight for the freedom they've long been denied but that one day will have. On that day, they'll be free at last from the oppressive yoke of their dominant hostile neighbor in Washington.
