On March 11th 2009 the Toronto District School Board proposed drastic budget cuts to address a $23 million dollar deficit. Officials proposed that key financial savings would be met through elimination of Educational Assistant (EA) positions in the classrooms.

This proposal has detrimental effects on the quality of education available to future generations. Children in Toronto face many barriers due to the range of cultures and languages, increasing attention and behavioural problems, and concurrent learning disabilities, and high rates of poverty in Ontario.

What do these savings mean for the kids??

EA’s play a vital role in student’s learning. They provide extra time and support to students who have not been formally identified as requiring special needs assistance.

When EA positions are cut from primary grades, these students will be left with no supports. Eliminating this educational support role will allow more children to experience learning difficulties, which progress to negative self perception, depression and low education attainment. More children will be at risk of falling through the cracks of the education system.

Education is a right!

Students with exceptionalities have a right to special education and
education assistants play a key role in supporting these children.
