I Oppose any ammendment wich would exempt for-profit home health care providers from the requirements of the Living Wage ordinance.

The working poor and people with physical disabilities are among the most vulnerable in our community. We want to make sure our family members who need special care get the best care possible. We also want to make sure that the workers providing home helath care are paid wages that they can live on.

As a community we have stood up and said that employers have a responsibility to pay a fair wage. The only home health care providers currently exempt from the ordinance are those non-profits whose primary source of revenue is from Medicaid. The for-profit providers seeking a new exemption make substantial profits now and can continue to do so while paying a Living Wage. They should not be allowed to plead poverty while paying poverty wages.

This is about basic fairness. A person who is taking care of the disabled, the frail and the elderly should not be paid less than a person working at McDonalds. You shouldn't have to be poor to care for the poor.

The people who so generously care for our elders need to be paid a wage that allows them to care for themselves and their families as well. It's only fair.

Every business large enough to help with the living wage campaign should do so.
