This is a scary cult. Though I am a Christian, I requested information be sent to me from the Church of Scientology website, because I was curious as to what they believe. I did receive the literature, but also many calls from the Church of Scientology in Milwaukee, WI. They would call my home several times a day for weeks. The calls finally stopped, but they were very persistant.
Tax exempt status is for non profit orginizations, scientology charges fees to be a member and move up the ladder, they make a profit and therefore are a business. If all businesses claimed to be a religeon would they be tax exempt too?
The Church of Scientology is a pyramid scheme and a huge business. It's all about money. The Government of the People should be taxing this business just like any other.
The court record is] replete with evidence [that Scientology] is nothing in reality but a vast enterprise to extract the maximum amount of money from its adepts by pseudo scientific theories... and to exercise a kind of blackmail against persons who do not wish to continue with their sect.... The organization clearly is schizophrenic and paranoid, and this bizarre combination seems to be a reflection of its founder, L.Ron Hubbard.

and thank you brenda L for being one of the 12 of us in the world that can spell "sepAration" correctly. Wow! you may even know that the word "decimate" (to destroy 10%of something) is misused by the entire world, top media outlets included, when the word "obliterate" is clearly the correct choice...What? Nobody knew that? Shame on you all!!!
As much as they charge there members to join and go up the ranks in church they should not be tax exempt. That is for non profit organization, and this company clearly makes a profit. Also non profit is for donations, this "church" does not take donations it has fees, just like the movies, and clubs do, so should these organizations be tax exempt too.
As obvious as it is that this is neither a "religious" nor a "non-profit" organazition, it shouldnt-but will continue to-enjoy taxexempt status as stated by law. And my name's Thom Cruz too!
This creepy cult is based on money. I have a family memeber caught up in it and he has spent over $60,000.00 as of the last complete bill I have seen for ten years of scientology membership on books, training and such. They call constantly and demand that he and my mother come for more training and they threaten them will all kinds of consequences if they dont. They DO NOT have the money and yet this cult tries to force them to go. They have to be stopped. They are dangerous.
Any organization that targets a particular group (such as rich and/or famous) should be seriously looked into by the IRS and other govt agencies. Did Jim Jones get to buy his Kool-Aid tax free? I hope this silliness ruins Toms career, and THAT would be a lesson that other celebs would pay attention to.
Cruise is an idiot and the Church of Scientology is a cult; not a religion. This cult has been perpetrating a lie to the masses trying to insight a religious revolution. The time has come for the government to step in and investigate the “religious” aspects of these frauds.
Dangerous and abusive aren't qualities I want in a self-help group. I also think it should be disbanded because I don't want them profiting off of the misery of others. Since that may be a ways off, at least we should make them pay taxes on the millions of dollars they fleece out of people.
