I believe that it is eBay's policy that individuals using eBay must be 18 years of age or older, or supervised by a parent / guardian / member 18 years or older. This being the case, their reasoning that persons may be using teachers editions to cheat seems to an unbelievable excuse to discriminate against homeschoolers.
because it makes no sense for Ebay to ban all teacher's editions. The publishers of homeschool materials do not care if those items are resold. Let the publishers police the market.
someHOW the government got into the EBAY system; why is it against ebay rules for USA sellers to sell these teachers editions but not a seller from Canada or another country??? makes you think..... why ban; i repeat BAN something that is NOT illegal?? ebay allows pornography?!?! tobacciano and racist black americana crap but all of a sudden does not allow teachers editions?!! this country is becoming a dictatorship and america needs to wake up big time!
Ebay and Amazon policies harm homeschoolers. Ebay has removed the whole homeschool book section in past and only returned it after protest..Kids can cheat on worksheets but NOT many can take the solution manuals to the tests themselves w/out the teacher catching on..so the excuse is a true NON issue...kids are smarter than ebay is on that one! If they memorize the test they pretty much memorize what they needed to learn any way! W public test scores recently Id say they would learn MORE that way IMO.. Public schools never buy on ebay or amazon! Private schools never do either they all purchase large quanitities. A whole sector of people are harmed by this policy! publishers sell their teachers editions and cater to homeschoolers. Yet ebay protects the child...Do they remove the pornography?? NO they dont! I say homeschoolers take your money to egroups and loops keep our money in our own community.
because as a Homeschooler, it easier for me to check my childrens' answers if I don't have to figure it out myself, which takes more time away from teaching (or having fun!)
This policy does not follow the law on resale of books and the net effect is discrimination against homeschoolers. eBay's policy in effect takes a position that only teachers can buy Teacher's Editions. Although eBay is a private business, due to the number of people who use the venue, and particularly homeschoolers who rely on the ability to purchase and sell their curriculum there, they are in effect making a statement and a policy that only teachers have the right to teach.
eBay claims that teacher's editions are for teachers---but even the publishers sell to the public. The punctuation errors on their policy page are an ironic addtion to this concern. See "Why does eBay have this policy?"
I support this petition because: This is America and one by one are freedoms are shrinking. Ebay needs to quit being politically correct and be a venue.
Ebay is a private business and has the right to do as they please. But why they would have such an arbitrary and capricious poicy as this is beyond comprehension. They seem to be making it a mission to alienate good honest folks from using AND PAYING FOR their services.
In an e-mail to us, Ebay says, "Since eBay strives to be a level-playing field, all Teacher's Edition
textbooks will be covered under this policy." In other words, we don't really care about whether homeschooling materials are different, we will just lump them in with any other seemingly similar educational materials without regard to their uniqueness.
In another e-mail from Ebay, they said, "Concerns were voiced regarding the sale of Teacher's Edition textbooks
on the site; as such eBay has used its discretion to prohibit the sale
of such items." What possible concerns could there be? Cheating? Enforce rules about underage buying. Also, this is homeschool. Do they really think the homeschooling parents are going to let their children cheat?
Perhaps there were commercial interests that did not want the competition of items being sold on Ebay. Well, that argument could probably made against MANY items sold on Ebay.
Perhaps there were some in the public education system (government schools) that see homeschooling as a tremendous threat to themselves and complained to Ebay.
Regardless of the source of the concerns, now is the time for us to make our concerns known. Sign this petition. Write to Ebay. Urge HSLDA to address this issue with Ebay.
Ebay is a great place to do business. Maybe if enough people complain, they will re-consider what they are doing and keep it a great place.
because we sell our old curriculum to help pay for new items. It makes no sense. The books that homeschoolers use are very rarely, used in the public school system. We no longer have a viable way to purchase needed items.
If ebay does not want to budge on their "new policy" someone else with the know-how and the resources needs to develop a new auction website just for homeschoolers that is JUST LIKE ebay. Personally, I'm so aggravated with them right now, I would love to take all of my business elsewhere.
This policy has wiped out my small business.
I am having to start all over again.
The mental, emotional spiritual and physical distress thas has caused me and my family is beyond description
I have been buying antique schoolbooks (including teacher's editions) on ebay since 1997. Someone told me about the ban on teacher's editions but I thought they must be mistaken. Later I bid on a 1930's teacher's edition of 1st grade textbook and then 1 day before the auction was supposed to end (about 5 days after I bid on it), ebay cancelled the listing and it vanished. I think it is quite ridiculous they don't want me (or others) buying (or selling) antique teacher's edition schoolbooks. I'm grateful for the ones I already acquired over the years (most through ebay!), but geez, what's next? Pretty soon ebay will ban student editions too, because how can they be sure the person buying it is a student? After all, they were intended for use by students! This is the most bizarre thing I ever encountered at ebay! (And I've seen nearly all of it over the years, including ghost in a jar and the virgin mary on the piece of toast!)
I support this petition because it is not eBay's job to regulate this. Anyone can go to the publishers themselves and order these manuals. EBay will not only be isolating an important group of buyers and sellers, but losing a share of profits from these sales!
I support this petition because eBay's claim of being just a venue is materially not a true statement. Homeschool businesses on eBay represent the cream of the crop in terms on honesty, customer service, and positive feedback. We want all our supporting fellow homeschoolers, family, and friends to know that eBay's decision has far-reaching repercussions.
Ebay has allowed the sell of these items for years. They have established "past practice." I think the real issue is that persons with anti-homeschool bias was created a fuss. Ebay needs to change their policy. I say lets help them police. Look at the prohibited items section, and each day search for some items. When found, immediate notify EBAY. Let's flood them with issues.
I support this petition because ebay keeps changing the policy and not letting us know. First it was big name publishers TE's and now it is Sonlight IG's that don't have any answers in them! This doesn't make sense. Ebay doesn't ask for proof of a driver's license inorder to buy a car on ebay, or proof of age to buy a knife, etc. And they are targeting names such as Bob Jones and Abeka and even names that are meant FOR homeschoolers. Please cancel this policy.
because this is rediculous. Since when is an elementary student going to get on Ebay and purchase a teachers edition to a book? Most of the TE that are sold on here are for Homeschoolers. Most of us know if our kids are cheating! If others are cheating then they will be found out. This is all ludicrous. That's ok though...I'll sell them elsewhere if E-bay won't allow us to here and refer people to look at my feedback on Ebay instead...heck atleast I'll save money fees that way!
I am disappointed that we are no longer able to sell our used homeschool products. This real "not right" as children under the age of 18 are suppose to NOT be able to purchase on eBay so what is the problem? Once again sellers are having listing cancelled for a BAD policy that should not even exsist if they upheld the NO ONE UNDER 18 can purchase on eBay. eBay is going after the sellers rather then the problem.
As listed, children age 18 or under that typically attend high school shouldn't be making purchases on ebay without adult approval legally. If they are purchasing such items then they will find a way to cheat by any means neccessary. Please understand parents teach at home and would like to use ebay as a resource. Publishers will sell these books without ID to anyone.
it seems rather odd to ban all teacher keys due to the idea that students are getting ahold of them to cheat. It does not make sense because most first, second, third graders have no idea how to get on ebay, open an account, make a purchase, then send a money order or have a paypal account to pay. I suspect a supplier or suppliers are putting in these complaints to ebay, using cheating as an excuse, but the real reason is that they would rather have parents go to them and pay full price for brand new materials, instead of resale. These used books were all once purchased new from the suppliers and are legal to resell.
I have in stock and will carry when I can find them at a reasonable cost (or if my mother who is a teacher and does not need her books she buys for herself and students)textbooks for those teachers and home school parents who CARE about the education of there children. If eBay is afraid of students getting a hold of these books, then do not let children buy in ebay, if these students are college students then the school they attend can punish them accordingly if they buy these books and do something dishonest with the contents inside. I guess I better go see if I have any of our teachers editions listed in the store to pull them before ebay does. Otherwise we will take these books elsewhere to be sold.
Putting a cap on education, what a concept.... Only those who can afford 100 dollar books get to teach? geesh!
mcdannells.com
Any student wanting to cheat so badly as to go to the trouble of making an online purchase will find another way to cheat. Meanwhile this policy totally cripples the ability of honest, hard working homeschoolers to buy what they need to do the job they have commited to. Most of us cannot possibly afford the outrageously priced TE from the publishers - some of whom will not sell to homeschoolers anyway! Homeschoolers provide a huge market for recycling educational material - a market the publishers probably don't appreciate because they want to sell their newest editions at ridiculous prices!
E-bay - I'm ashamed of you, this is the pinnacle of discrimination.
I support this petition because the basis of this policy is discriminatory in its very nature. Obviously Ebay has no way of knowing who is purchasing anything that is sold, and it is curious that it is focused on "innocent" educational materials.
It is ludicrous to think that any restriction on the sale of teachers versions of textbooks on e-bay is even remotely valid. Please cancell this ridiculous policy ASAP!!!
I support this petition.
I support this petition because it is ridiculous if you think you are going to stop the few that want to get away with dishonesty..if kid's wanted to get teaching materials they will, Ebay is not the only place. Why let those that are honestly trying to sell their cirriculums suffer??? GET REAL!!
because, these same teacher editions and keys prohibited by ebay are available to anyone from the publishers themselves. Since the publishers make them available to anyone, ebay should have no problem either. I am a home schooling parent who enjoys buying/selling these materials with ebay. Don't restrict the honest because of the few who will always find a way to accomplish their dishonesty.
I support this petition because this is another attempt to restrict our freedoms. You can sell all kinds of pornography on this website, but you can't sell educational material? Give me a break!
I am a homeschooler and find this policy unfair to anyone looking for curriculun on ebay.
Ebay says it can not determine who is and is not a teacher, and thus refuses to sell to all.
Yet they still sell X rated items to any bidder without knowing whether the buyer is a sex offender or not.
Can you all say "hypocrite"? I knew that you could.
for ebay to ban TEs is book censorship on ebay's part. What right does ebay have to determine what books a person may buy? Ebay has also placed itself in the role of parent by putting this ban in place -- which usurps our own role as parents (ban was put in place because, in ebay's opinion, kids were buying these books to cheat).
because I need to be able to buy and sell curriculum to teach my children, to make enough money to purchase more curriculum for the upcoming year, and to pass along what we are finished with to other homeschool teachers.
Homeschooling is a legal and successful option in all 50 staes. As schools, we need to be able to purchase both student and teacher materials to do our best.
This is completely discriminatory! We ARE TEACHERS! This has been brought to HSLDA attention and I look forward to what they will be doing for us in this matter! If you are a member yrge HSLDA to send a note to ebay. I guess there is some liberals taking hold of ebay right now that need to be put in their place....kindly!
I am a homeschooler that has been buying on selling on ebay for several yrs. I think this policy is unfair and makes no sense - I can buy TEs on other websites and sell mine, which I am currently doing!
I support this decision because homeschooling mom's rely on the sale of one year's curriculum to purchase for the next school year. It amazes me that they allow the sale of lewd and suggestive items but prohibit items that make Christian homeschooling possible for lots of moms!
I support this petition because as a home school mom, I buy and sell a lot of my books from ebay. The rule is enforced randomly, relying on other ebay users to turn in offenders which creates a hostile environment. Why have a catagory for selling HS books at all if they don't allow TE of texts? It is absurd.
I buy alot of homeschool materials on ebay I am a homeschooler.I resell on ebay.Ebay also has a policy: no one under 18 can buy or sell on ebay. New policy of ebay: BOGUS
I support this petition because TEs are routinely sold to ANYONE through the publishers, their resale is not illegal, many public school teachers buy these books, homeschoolers depend on these books. eBay should remain 'just a venue'.
I sell many homeshooling curriculums and textbooks with teacher supporting materials to teachers and schools. This Ebay policy makes my selling on Ebay hard. This is not fair to homeschoolers and teachers or Schools.
