Most homeschool materials are not used in the school systems, and are specific to homeschoolers. Therefore, most students would have no use for the teacher's editions. Those who ARE homeschooled probably have access to them anyway in their own homes. Not only that, but if a student wants to acquire a teacher's edition that badly, he or she can go to their local homeschool bookstore and buy one easily enough. Since when is it ebay's place to act as judge and jury on this?
because the homeschool materials ebay is trying to prohibit the sale of are NOT protected items. They can be bought BRAND NEW by ANYONE without proof of being a teacher. There are many different curriculum sellers that sell these items BRAND NEW. We are only trying to save money by buying them used via ebay. If ebay will do a little research into homeschooling and curriculum sales, they will find this to be true.
I second finding an alternative auction site for, thanks for the info. If Ebay knew what percentage of their users were homeschoolers, their decision would leave them shuddering.
Wendy Orth (255) said it best. Ebay is not the parent. And Wendy Britt (250) also has a good point. How do they know it is not a CHILD who is buying the porn? If it applies to us, it applies to all.
I support this because you are supposed to be 18 to buy and sell on ebay and they do not prohibit other things that are unsuitable for minors. (porn, knives, etc) I thought ebay was just a venue?
I have purchased many of our homeschooling resources through E-bay. When I heard that E-Bay would no longer allow the sale of teacher's editions, I was sad to think that I couldn't get any resources there and I was at a loss regarding where I *could* go for our materials.
I thought that one had to be over 18 to purchase or sell through E-bay. If my recollection on this is correct, then the anti-teacher's-edition policy *does* specifically discriminate against parents who teach their children because they're the only ones who can legitimately buy through E-bay. The students they're allegedly protecting from cheating aren't permitted to purchase through E-bay.
If a person wishes to cheat, he or she will find a way to do so. Not selling teacher material does not stop a cheater it only stops a teacher from having access to valuable material.
Ebay does not need to monitor people and their buying habits, especially concerning Teacher Editions that are used to educate our children. We do not need big brother looking over our shoulders!
I support this petition because it is neither eBay's duty nor right to stop the selling of Teacher's Editions. They are not illegal or dangerous, and if parents cannot monitor their own children to prevent them from cheating, then the problem is with that family, not for eBay to resolve!
Will ebay stop selling pornagraphy because off abuses? But that would loose them too much money. Homeschoolers should not use Ebay any more, find an alternate auction site. How about Homeschoolbid.com?
If a student wants to cheat they can very easily order these same items new, directly from one of the many, many suppliers. Banning them from Ebay will in no way stop this problem (if it really is a problem).
This new policy certainly discriminates against homeschoolers. Ebay would loose a lot of sales from me b/c most of what I list is old Teacher's Ed's that I no longer need, and almost all I buy on ebay are Teacher's materials I find at discounted prices which enables me to educate my children affordably.
I have used ebay to buy alot of my homeschool materials including teachers editions. I believe it is the parents responsibility to manage their ebay accounts and not let their children purchase such things. How to manage? Keep the password from them. It is not for ebay to "police".
It should not be up to eBay to try to restrict students from looking at teacher's editions. This is a heart issue between parents and children. The children should have been taught not to cheat in the first place!
This is descrimination against any homeschooler. I am so upset about this new rule of theirs not only as a buyer but as a seller. We have every right to teach our children at home, we should have the right to buy and sell our books on ebay. If ebay wants to ban something look at all the xrated things that they sould be banning. I don't think children are on ebay looking for ways to cheat. If anyhting they are looking at the xrated stuff and pictures of half dressed women.
I am a homeschooling parent that depends on selling my curriculum to other homeschoolers in order to purchase more materials to teach my children. This new policy is ridiculous!
I support this petition because I am a homeschooling mother who buys and sells curriculum regularly on eBay. It is a great place to buy at a discount!!! Parents should regulate whether their children are cheating, NOT eBay!!!
Because homeschoolers need to be able to buy books at resonable prices. How could a student from a traditional school get an answer book that they could cheat with? Public schools don't sell their books on ebay.
This policy makes it difficult for families to educate their children in the way that they feel is best. This policy will negatively affect many children in receiving a good education.
I am offended by eBay's heavy-handed policy and have been shocked at the obvious bias against the homeschooling community. Shame on them for the trouble they have caused for many homeschooling families!!
We have been homeschooling for over 18 years and need to purchase teacher's manuals for the textbooks we use. Your policy would not only prevent us from purchasing TMs at used prices from each other, but would also be demonstrating a level of discrimination which goes against your business image.
teacher's manuals and answer keys are a vital tool for homeschoolers who are striving to raise responsible, well educated young adults. How can Ebay say they are concerned about these getting into the wrong hands when the general Ebay rules don't even allow under 18 year olds from purchasing or selling items on Ebay? Do they really think elementary aged kids are surfing Ebay looking for answer keys and buying them under assumed identities? Public-schooled students couldn't even get a current edition copy of a teacher's manual used in their particular class if they wanted one (unless they stole one from the teacher). Public school teachers may have to buy certain classroom supplies, but the curriculum they use is purchased (not to mention, owned) by the school district and therefore, they are not free to sell it as they please. Unlike homeschooling parents, who not only have to pay exhorbitant school taxes for services they don't even use, but they must also pay for all the curriculum they need. In my case, I have 4 children and that means 4 different levels of curriculum. Buying used on Ebay saves us a lot over buying new from the various distributors. Has Ebay truly thought about their stance on this or were they persuaded by other factions?
I support this petition because Ebay is not the police force. If everything used to commit a wrongdoing would be removed from the auction site, there would be no site to run. If something is not illegal, it should be up to the individuals whether they are putting it to good use or not. The ammount of good these resources do outweighs the harm caused by those few troubled students and the families who permit them to be used in inappropriate ways.
Homeschoolers have a choice as to where we purchurse our materials. We've been choosing Ebay for a long time. Don't make a change that over a silly and ineffective rule like this. People determined to cheat will find a way to cheat. There are plenty of other places to buy books.. That's not what's happening here -- please don't make it harder or more expensive for parents to teach their children. Wouldn't that be going against the basic foundational beliefs of Ebay itself?
I support this petition. An individuals freedom to educate himself or his children should NOT be undermined by ebay. Without access to teacher's manuals the ablility to educate falls into the hands of the few, mainly government officals that we don't trust our education to in the first place. I am sure that ebay makes plenty of profit off of homeschool auction and should rethink this policy.
Since when do kids need teacher's resources to cheat? They can look in their own books for the answers to their tests. If they could not, then where would they learn the answers in the firts place. This policy is very unreasonable and frankly silly.
It's difficult enough to find affordable materials as a home educator. Ebay's policy just added another layer of complication. Solution manuals, even in the hands of children, are educational, in fact ... this is especially true with math books. The discovery of answers can lead to the "light bulb" effect. It's a side benefit the "cheaters" might stumble into! But, I'm not using it to "cheat." Respectfully request that you please restore the market freedoms of e-bay, or risk losing many of your customers.
I support this petition. Homeschooling is not illegal in the United States. Us families who Homeschool our children using full curriculums NEED the teacher books to help in teaching our children and correcting their assignments, quizzes and tests. At the end of each school year several Homeschooling families sell their books on ebay to other Homeschooling families. The text books without the teacher books don't do any of us any good. We ARE teachers!
I understand the potential predicament that ebay may feel they are in, but it is unreasonable to assume that students so want to cheat that they would spend a significant amount of money on teachers manuals (They are not cheap!), receive these materials and then hide them and use them for an entire school year. I suppose it may happen, I am sure VERY rarely, but it seems unlikely and eBay is certainly not a students guardian and should not be in that position. Further, the parents of those students should be monitoring what their child is doing. Selling the TE is good for homeschoolers, smaller private schools, and eBay, please reconsider this policy.
My Abeka mathmatic listing was pulled a couple of hours before it expired and I had many bids. I e-mailed eBay about this ridiculous policy and the next day I received a warning from them reprimanding me for an expired listing with no bids that they deleted from my unsold category. They stated that I wasn't being singled out but who do you know that goes around reporting unsold items. When I look at the active auctions I can see hundreds of active listings with teachers editions. I believe that my unsold listing that I received a warning on was some kind of intimidation tactic since I have been e-mailing them frequently about this subject.
I support this petition, because I have and would like to continue to use e-bay as a source for homeschooling materials. If I'm going to teach a subject, I need the teacher's manual, and although I admire e-bay's attempt to help control the cheating that is rampant in our public schools, I agree with others that it's not their job to do this. This policy largely then discriminates against the host of homeschoolers who buy and sell materials on e-bay.
I am a home schooling parent who used e-bay to build my curriculum and without the teacher's editions I am unable to do this on e-bay. I have since begun looking into other sources for used books WITH teachers editions. I also sell my old books WITH teachers editions to suppliment our income and off-set the cost of the new school year. Without this ability I am at a loss. I can either find creative ways to list my items so they don't get pulled, find a way to offer them off e-bay after the sale has been completed. (e-bay doesn't get the extra final value fees), or stop listing them on e-bay all together (e-bay doesn't get any of their fees that way). Think about it e-bay.
