Goal Progress:
This petition is in reaction to "The View" a syndicated show broadcast on the ABC network. The show was created in 1997 by Barbara Walters, and since its inception has provided a hostile environment for African Americans. Upon Star Jones departure, The View has had many "guest hosts." All of which appeared to be possible "replacements" for the one minority seat left vacant by the firing of Ms. Jones. These "replacements" have been subjected to insensitive commentary and questions that at this point cannot be attributed to anything other than blatant bigotry.
Since Star Jones has left the show, Barbara Walters and Joey Behar have physically touched, inspected, and taunted African American Women about their hair, and questioning as to whether or not it was "real." This as a practice is very demeaning, as African slaves were subjected to similar inspections by their captives. During the 9 years of having a permanent minority on the show, there was never a time where they approached Ms. Jones with similar overtures. Additionally, being that they are fixtures in the entertainment industry, they are WELL aware of white women who wear wigs and weaves on a regular basis. Those women have NEVER been subjected to such disrespect. Here are some examples:
R&B artist and actress Brandy was subjected to demeaning and inappropriate questions about her hair and family on Wednesday, July 5th. In the history of the show, it has been concluded that these questions have NEVER been commonplace with the white guests who frequent the show.
Entertainment host Tanika Ray was touched in an inappropriate manner and also grilled about her hair during her visit on the Friday, July 21st show.
Actress and comedienne Mo’Nique was a guest host on Monday, July 24th. The actress newborn twins were described as "creatures" by Barbara provoking a response from Mo'Nique, "Wait a minute Barbara; they’re not creatures sugar. Don’t call my children creatures.” Both Walters and Behar remarked to Mo'Nique ...“Just remember, you come and go, but we stay,” Walters then reached over Mo’Nique to high-five Behar.
We feel that this behaviour is racist, divisive and totally unacceptable. We are asking for a complete boycott of the show, Ms. Walters, and all of their sponsors who appear to support such demeaning behaviour.
