Goal Progress:
This petition is aimed at Twentieth Century Fox, Sony Classical Records, James Cameron, James Horner, and everyone else involved in the making of the 1997 blockbuster epic "Titanic". The score to the film, composed by James Horner, was a massive success: spurred in part by audience members flocking to purchase memorabilia during the "Titanic" craze of the late 1990's when the film was in its theatrical run, the soundtrack to the film became the most successful film score in history. Containing only 14 instrumental tracks, the original soundtrack contained several memorable cues from the film, including "Death of Titanic" and "Take Her to Sea, Mr. Murdoch." However, many other cues were altered in the final cut of the film - "Southampton" was subtly different, as was "Rose" and "Leaving Port." Although the soundtrack was an utter success, the music released was still woefully inadequate for true fans of the film and the music.
Sony Classical later released a sequel album titled "Back to Titanic". Although this contained vital cues (including the chilling music from the Grand Staircase dome implosion in track 6, "A Building Panic"), the soundtrack was ultimately incomplete, containing an unnecessary extra version of "Nearer, My God To Thee" and three tracks that, though gorgeous, had little to do with the themes used in the film ("Lament" and "A Shore Never Reached".) After purchasing both scores, I kept wondering: where is all the other music? Where are the intense sinking cues? Where are the chilling pieces used at the beginning of the film when Brock is exploring the wreck? Where is the music used when Jack dies, when many viewers found themselves feeling the same emotions of Rose? Music played such a vital role in the film - every note held a certain emotional place, and the movie was made all the more emotionally intense because of Horner's magnificent work.
Several cues registered to the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) are visible hints to the hidden gems of the complete Titanic recordings, including "Rowing Away," "Two and a Half Miles Down", "Butterfly Comb", and "Trapped on D-Deck". These cues provide a level of intensity to the original feature that would be a delight to experience in a collective CD set.
Therefore, I propose that all those involved with the production of the score to the movie "Titanic" release a complete score to the public. Not only would this fulfill the wishes of Titanic fans and soundtrack connoisseurs, it would also generate more interest in James Cameron's upcoming feature "Avatar", also scored by Horner. There have been several re-releases of the film - the VHS version, the original DVD version, the Collector's Edition, and most recently the 10th Anniversary edition, when most people thought the original score would hit shelves - but the original album remains as an incomplete reminder to one of the most culturally significant films of the late 20th century.
Titanic won the Academy Award for Best Original Score - and rightfully so - yet the original album does not justify this. Other films have won the same award - most notably the Lord of the Rings trilogy - and have had their complete recordings released in a CD/DVD set - yet Titanic, having earned far more than these films at the box office, does not. I strongly urge executives to dust the cobwebs off these unreleased cues and release them to the general public, so the initial magic of the film can be once again experienced.
