The number one cause of injury to females in the U.S. is domestic violence. In the year 2000 alone, 1,247 women were killed by their former/current boyfriends/husbands. Statistics show that one in four women will be battered by the man that is suppose to "love" her. If she leaves him, the risk of being murdered by him increases four to one. In American 3 -4 MILLION women are battered each year by their intimate partner. More than twice as many women are killed each year by former/current boyfriend/husband than by complete strangers. On average, more than three women are killed EVERYDAY by their current/former boyfriend/husband. We need to come together to make the laws stricter, restraining orders ARE NOT working. The majority of women killed already have one issued against the man who kills her. The men know they can get away with it, that is why it is so common today! We are failing these women, ones that can just as easily be our daughters, sisters, mothers, or friends. Help me be their voices. My proposals are:
1) If a woman (or man) calls complaining of domestic violence, first offense, mandatory 24 hours in jail. Second, mandatory 72 hours. Third, he is sent to jail for at least six months to a year, depending on severity. During this time he must successfully complete classes, such as anger management, if not he remains in jail.
2) If he brags that "he will get her when he gets out," or contacts, harrasses her, or threatens her when released, he goes back for a mandatory 2 - 5 years.

Though I know this will not completely solve the issue, I do feel it will deter many men from using violence. It will also reassure women that on that third call, she is rid of him, encouraging her to report EVERY incident. During his incarceration, she can get her life together and do whatever is necessary to be sure she can live in peace, without fear of him and his retaliation. For once, he will be properly imprisoned, not the innocent women being a prisoner in her own home.

I support these suggestions, but think that they are too weak. Often these laws are in place, but good old boys make deals with each other and in a couple of years the guy has his record cleaned, looks like a church boy and is on to his next victim- no improvement, just better at hiding. PLEASE - add to your petition or signature that it is IMPOSSIBLE for a DV violator to EVER have their record expunged - not even for ONE offense. Add- Domestic Violence Conviction - ONCE - no three chances - ONCE - and that person permanently looses their right to custody over any children they may have. DV history - NO CUSTODY PERIOD! I am a survivor and I can tell you, if my batterer had 24 hours in jail to think about it when I left, I would have been dead when he got out. 1st -THE FIRST DV offense, mandatory and public caning, (it is popular and effective in other countries)and 6 months in jail, lifetime random drug testing - as requested by victim, and AUTOMATIC financial compensation directly to the victim, to help them metally and emotionally heal from the battery or other abuse. Many laws are in place, but not enforced. Hold District Attorneys accountable - not for how LOW the numbers of DV cases they have, but for the higher number of CONVICTIONS they are giving and for the stricter sentences - like felony charges and others here. Public officials will continue to do NOTHING unless THEIR jobs are on the line. Make officials accountable. Mandatory public listings of where Domestic Violence offenders live FOR LIFE. Yes, Domestic Violence needs to include emotional abuse, since that is even harder for children to heal from. Domestic Violence Offender - NO CHILD CUSTODY - NOT EVER!

I support this petition. I am a recent victim of a violent domestic crime in Crawford County Missouri. I was almost killed in my home by my ex-girlfriends friend. He is incarcerated by she is not, even though the man who almost killed me told police that my ex-girlfriend told him to do this for her. She is a prior convicted felon (which I was unaware of)and continues to terrorize me and the children of my family. She walks right through the restraining order and the Prosecuting Attorney has done nothing. I do believe it is because of our homosexual relationship, however I am still an American and deserve equal protection under the law.

I like it, but bragging about getting revenge is common in all convicts, and really isn't grounds fo additonal years, unless more evidence occurs.

I support this petition. I believe that there should be more help for survivors. I was left with three children and nothing to live on. I had to stay in a shelter that provided no child care so I would end up and lose my job. Why is this?? My husband was out of jail in 10 hours and back to his normal life while my children and I had to suffer. Does this make sense to anyone else?

I support this petition. The laws need to protect us survivors of domestic violence better. they need to have grants to help us get back on our feet and to help us get better lawyers thru legal services of our states. my husband has broke his order of protection here in missouri and still getting by with it. i have a full order of protection, and he threatened to kill all 3 of us, but the judge still would sign a protection order for my son. they're trying to make him go for week-end visits. but he's 15 and refuses to go. the law said they can't physically force him to go.The laws need to be harder on the suspects and grant the orders of protection and enforce them better for children as well as for the women.

YOU NEVER KNOW THE FEAR UNTIL YOU HAVE LIVED IN THE FEAR....STAND FOR WHAT YOU BELIEVE IN AND NOT WHAT YOU FEAR....

You want to end the chain of abuse? Set the abuser up and make it look like self-defense, take his worthless ass out. He won't abuse you anymore, he won't abuse anyone else in the future and you have the satisfaction of knowing all that for sure. Trying to get government to protect the abused is a lost cause. That is until one of them become the abused. The first key is to leave at the first sign that your partner is an abuser, second make it perfectly clear you are not afraid of them and you will kill him/her in self-defense if necessary. You have to be able to pull the trigger when necessary. Putting an abuser in jail just intesifies the rage and a smart one will keep his/her mouth shut and plot until he/she kills the abused. You better be ready to protect yourself since there may be noone but yourself to do it one day.

I fully support these ideas of change. Those who ridicule and try to deter theses types of changes only prove themselves to be the very reason this type of petition is needed. I only hope that those DON'T BELIEVE in change never have to actually face the fear and terror these victims live with.

If you are truly serious and commited to this cause; I highly recommend you get off this site. Start a non-profit org with it's own webpage. The only thing you're going to get here is more abuse and you will NOT be taken seriously. Be forewarned you are now a target of ridicule and hate. Most of the people here are morons and teenagers with nothing better to do. Then there's the percentage that come here to troll for conflicts. And finally, the misguided; who actually think that this site can be of benefit. The only people it benefits are the aforementioned.
