Dear Animal Friends:

As you are aware, the Toronto Zoo has been experiencing negative media attention this year in a number of areas, including its CEO, Board Chair, Board of Management, current and past Councilors on the Board of Management, the inappropriate use of exotic junkets and free Zoo passes by said Councilors, the dissolution of the Zoo Foundation, and finally poor Union-Management relations. Many Torontonians feel that something "bad smells at the ZOO".

The ZOO lacks of an advisory group to give an honest opinion and enlightenment to the Board of Management.

I am proposing to organize a "Citizen Advisory Group for the Toronto ZOO". This group would be made up of citizens from the City of Toronto and the GTA and One Worker(s) of the Toronto ZOO.

I am asking the support of all Canadians and our American neighbors who ever visited The Toronto ZOO and well.. feel that maybe The ZOO needs a long overdue and necessary overhaul.

Once all the Online Signatures have been received , I am planning to bring this Online Petition to our Toronto Mayor and the City Council to recognize this Advisory Group in an effort to return the ZOO to its previous prestigious position.

Thanks for your support!

People has send me emails before deciding whether or not to support this petition; I would let the media do it for me instead.
Here is Editorial comment that appear in the Tororont SUN: November 16,2008

Ugly: Zoo-y spending. I have no problem with councilors donating a few passes to charity to raise money in their community, but Glenn De Baeremaeker handing out 625 of them? C'mon buddy, that's almost two a day. GDB likes to spend money like water. He needs to be reined in. Too bad there's no one on that troubled zoo board to do it. This is a board and management team out of control at a zoo, with resignations and lawsuits on its books, that wants to start a massive fundraising campaign, leading us to...

Uglier: Zoo Chairman Raymond Cho's bid to bring a statute honouring Dr. Frank William Schofield to the park. How did something the zoo doesn't need become a priority? This is personal pet project run amok, with $12,000 in travel bills to boot. It doesn't matter that South Korea wants to fund part of it if it's not enhancing the zoo experience. And this won't.

You can now make a logical response.

Emails keep pouring in. Torontonians keep asking me what is happening at the zoo. I would very much tell you but again it would be innapropiate for me however the media can let you in the "problems" that is the reason this proposal to have a "Citizens Advisory Committee" is there for to positive influence the Board of Management before they screw up again, and again and again.
Toronto Star : Editorial Comment November 30,2008

With hard-pressed consumers cutting back on their spending and attendance already dropping at the Toronto Zoo, it seems an inopportune time to raise the fee to see this attraction. Nonetheless, that's what the zoo board has decided to do, with the cost of general admission to increase by one dollar, to $21, starting in the spring.

The measure must be approved by city council in order to take effect. Councillors should take care to examine the zoo's proposal before issuing any endorsement. Indeed, the entire zoo operation would benefit from a thorough examination.

Councillor Raymond Cho, chair of the zoo board, can insist – as he did last week – that this civic institution is "doing fine." But evidence suggests the contrary. Over the past year, the zoo's administration has been tarnished by the unexplained manoeuvrings of CEO Calvin White concerning severance pay and a six-month leave-of-absence. Two city councillors have quit the zoo board in frustration over how it is run. The zoo has split from its independent fundraising arm, the Toronto Zoo Foundation. Attendance is down this year to 1.3 million, from 1.4 million in 2007. And the union representing zoo workers has called for a sweeping overhaul of management.

If that's Cho's definition of "doing fine," one shudders to think what might constitute a crisis.

A strong spotlight should be focused on this agency. Accountability needs to be restored. A long hard look at the zoo's latest budget request should be just the beginning.

I support this petition. Something needs to be done to help the Metro Zoo. For one thing I don't think Raymond Cho is suitable. He rarely visits the zoo, he doesn't even live in Scarborough.

I support this petition and applaud Mr. Avila for coming up with an excellent idea. The Toronto Zoo has many problems and a citizen advisory group has great potential.

As a lifelong lover at the Toronto Zoo (I have been going ever since I was a baby), I hope something can be done soon. I am in full support of a Citizen Advisory Group and would gladly be involved in it.
