October 2, 2006, my cat, Samantha, died. It was determined that the cause of her death was from nibbling frequently on a wood sorrel house plant, the Shamrock, that was sitting on my dining table. A week prior, I had rushed another cat of my own off to the vet with the same symptoms. It was determined an idiopathic condition and said that he "must have eaten something he shouldn't have", per my veterinarian. These cats nibbled on the same plant frequently when we weren’t looking and shared the same symptoms.

Samantha’s death was unnecessary and could have easily been prevented, had I known I had a poisonous plant sitting on my dining room table. She isn’t the only one. Each day, pets are falling ill or dying, by way of a toxic plant. The information on the plant's container itself is non-existent and in doing research online about toxic plants, I have found the information to be incomplete, inadequate, and/ or conflicting. If we had the actual information available on the plant itself, we might be able to prevent our pets from being poisoned.

I believe a law should be passed to clearly identify plants that are toxic to pets. It seems like good common sense to have the toxicity information and symptoms of poisoning on the plant tags and containers. Also, plants sold in garden stores should be sold in categories of "pet safe plants" and "toxic plants".

I would like your support in getting a law passed, on a national level. I want to make it legally mandatory for plant companies and their distributors to have to print on the plant tags and container, whether any plant is toxic or safe for pets and what the symptoms of being poisoned by that plant are. Had I known my plant was toxic to any degree, I would have never brought it into my home OR I would have, at the very least, had it in a location where the cats couldn't get to it. It's unfortunate that it took the death of my cat, who I considered a valued family member, to get me to take the plant out of my house.
