THE AFRICAN SLAVERY PROCESS
The Slave Trade
Until the abolition of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade in 1841, It was a horrific process. The process started when slaves were kidnapped (sadly often by other African tribes, when the leaders of these tribes had to pay debts to Spanish traders) from their homes and families, and then sent to live in giant slave factories that would hold them until ships would carry them to the New World. Conditions at these factories were deplorable, but nowhere near as bad as what the slaves would experience on the Middle Passage.
The Middle Passage was the journey the slaves took crossing the Atlantic to the Carribean and Americas. Conditions on the ships were terrible. Roughly three hundred slaves would be piled into a single boat, shackled, bent over double and placed side by side to conserve space. Oftentimes, there was only about five feet of headroom. There was little ventilation, and sometimes not even enough buckets to hold human waste, so slaves were forced to sit in their own waste. Naturally in such conditions, diseases ran rampant. Morality rates on the Middle Passage were nearly 18%. It was not just men who were taken on this journey – women and children too suffered.
Placed in such a situation, slaves preferred to die. But even this was not to come true. The crew realized that they couldn’t allow the slaves to die – live slaves meant money, while a dead body wasn’t worth anything. When slaves tried to starve themselves, crewmembers would torture them into eating. If that didn’t work, they were force fed. According to one account, a slave ship, when realizing they had inadequate supplies to cross the Atlantic, threw fifty slaves overboard to lessen the number of mouths to feed.
