To attempt to excuse and justify the slaughter of seals by bringing up the slaughter of other animals is ludicrous. One cannot excuse one horror because there are others. As a vegan I denounce the exploitation of ALL animals. Having witnessed the slaughter of seal pups myself this year in the northern Gulf of St. Lawrence, I can attest to the fact that it is unbelievably cruel and not regulated by DFO whatsoever. This year in particular we see proof that the seal hunt is not sustainable, exposing another lie by the government. Despite the implications of climate change and DFO's own estimate that 90 - 100% of seal pups have drowned in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence due to deteriorated nursery ice - upon which they rely until old enough to swim - the slaughter was allowed to continue with a further government-sanctioned death toll of 270,000 seal pups. Add to that the number of 'struck and lost' pups that escape to die later of their injuries, and pups discarded because of damaged pelts, and the death toll rises obscenely higher. To say that the sealing industry is necessary for Atlantic Canada is equally ludicrous. Sealing accounts for less than a half a percent of Newfoundland's GDP. Less than 1% of Newfoundland
Stop this mass murder of our precious harp and hooded seals. This clubbing of our infant seals is one of the most heinous crimes that the Canadian Gov't should shut down.
As a human being, I am ashamed at the sheer brutality and inhumanity displayed by these hunters and by those who insist on allowing them to perpetuate this crime. Such BRAVE men, to chase down and beat defenseless babies to death. It's the 21st century!! Can they not find a better way to earn their bread? Such individuals have no souls.
I used to look up to Canada as one of the last places on earth to value its natural wonders, but after seeing it's capitalistic embrace and rape of its nature, I now feel that the good ol USA overwhelms Canada completely as far its protection of it's natural world.

I request the Canadian government to end the cruel seal hunting that ends with slaughtering of marine mammals on this planet. Its disgusting, unnecessary, and inhumane.
