The person who killed our son by shaking him was sentenced five years ago. After much deliberation about the sentence, after considering that she was a 51 year old grandmother with no history of violence and apparent remorse for the death of our son, the judge sentenced her to 3-1/3 to 10 years. since that time, we have spoken dozens of times to groups of child care providers, students, doctors and nurses about the danger of shaking a child. last year, I spoke at the nationial AAP Leadership Forum and the Suregon General's Workshop on Child Maltreatment. After we've told what happened to our son, someone always asks the question. "What happened to her?"
I'm thankful that our judge held her to account for the violation of a fundamental trust, a violation than cannot and should not ever be excused.
