Nobody reaches the pinnacle of his profession without a full tank of confidence, and if that profession happens to be athletics, chances are the tank is overflowing.
So it should come as no surprise that when asked about the fairly popular perception among baseball's Old School that the days of 300-game winners will end with the careers of advanced-age aces such as Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine and Randy Johnson (assuming the latter two get the 24 and 36 wins, respectively, they need to reach the magic number before calling it quits), the New School, represented by the game's top in-their-prime pitchers, take offense.
"That's pretty closed-minded," says Oakland A's lefty Barry Zito, a 27-year-old with a Cy Young award and 87 career wins already under his belt. "A little bit insulting, really."
