in terms of personal taste, i would say you cannot decide.in terms of musicianship, that is a different story. in almost all forms of heavy Metal, you will find that alot of the bands have song structures based off of Jazz or Classical Music. tw o of the most complicated forms of music. Metal's Musicians are almost unrivaled in the amount of talent and skill they posses. the Guitar in Metal is amazing. thrashing heavy to a neo-classical shred, it has it all. from techinical to epic, from raw and heavy, to symphonic and epic, Metal has so many flavors that you cannot name. as for Pop, mainly synthizers, Power Chords, genericly produced beat, and alot of lip-synching. Metal in terms of musicianship blows pop out of the water and into space.
