I once got a mail about a girl who had apparently been kidnapped; it included the father's e-mail and address, and what I did was mail him, asking whether it was true. What did he reply? "I don't have any daughter; somebody must've taken my e-mail from my university site. Please tell everyone that it's not true." I get chainmails like that every few weeks. Unless you really know that person, the chances of it being true are small.
