I Have played Runescape for for free for many years, and I enjoy the game thouroughly, but I would enjoy the game much more if I had a membership, which my parents can't afford. I understand the costs of running such a large game as Runescape, and understand the fee for membership; but, seeing how the game is thriving, I think the game would raise enough money off donations to keep it running and expanding, if it were put to the people that if no-one donates, the fee will return. If it's not possible to have a fulltime free membership, I suggest that each usrname gets, say, 3 months free membership as a taster, then gets reverted back to free.
