To begin with, there was never, repeat, never a sketch on The Tonight Show called "Hang A Darkie" and anyone who claims otherwise is either very mis-informed or a liar. Here's the whole truth: Carson noticed that the cigarette box kept on his desk had been broken. He in turn found out that Don Rickles had broken it while serving as guest host the previous night. Carson then learned that Rickles was shooting his current show C.P.O. Sharkey in the next studio. Carson took his box and had the cameras follow him to the next studio. Rickles and Harrison Page were in the middle of a scene when Carson walked onto the set. Both Rickles and Page were both caught off guard by the surprise appearence of Carson. Carson then went into a impromptu impression of "Rickles" and that's when the exchange between Carson, Rickles and Page took place.
