911 patriot I wholeheartedly agree. I always used to argue that there are enough of US living at or below the poverty line, and that others gain twisted perspective outside of the U.S.A. mostly due to our military might. As I went to college with people of many different nationalities, I reamember enountering so many different questions like you especially when they witnessed the conditions of living for the poorest americans, and it breaks my heart. I live in NYC, I was near ground zero on 9/11 and had many friends who went to my old high school which is only a couple of miles away from the WTC site. I've seen that devastation but also understood that for years others have gone through the same thing, and it's only these events that have brought America on the page with the rest of the world, including the new passport laws that are going into effect.
