Pit Bull Ban In California : HECK NO

There is no such thing as a bad breed.

Just bad owners.

----

Due to the recent attempt to get Pit Bulls banned in California, I am starting a petition AGAINST that ban. Why?

Pit Bulls are simply one breed that have had a VERY bad reputation. The truth is, it is not simply a breed or instinct in a dog that makes it bite a human. It is the reaction the dog makes to being THREATENED. Often times when a Pit Bull bites a child, the child is unsupervised, or not being watched closely. Young children do not know how to act around dogs. They will tug on their ears, tails, pull their hair, jump on them, poke them... and the dog, in this case a Pit Bull, feels threatened.

"The dog just bit the child out of no where!"

No. The dog felt threatened, simply because the child did not understand. If the parent had been paying attention to the child, they would have noticed and stopped the child before the dog bit the kid.

"The dog could attack at any moment."

Wrong again. Pit Bulls, all dogs too, react for a reason. NEVER does a dog act without feeling some kind of threat or is attacked itself.

Also, irradicating a breed does not solve dog bites from happening.

In fact, there is NO REASON to ban a certain breed of dog due to their reputation.

You could simply enfource a law that says dogs must be muzzled when out of their house.

That certainly solves the problem, now, doesn't it?

"But the dog could get loose!"

That, is the OWNERS fault. Not the dogs. Punishing the dog for something it's owner did does not solve anything.

There was once two Pit Bulls trained for Search and Rescue. They were training with their owner one day when one of the Pit Bulls ran off, sensing something. A storm was approaching and the dog got frightened. It ran to a near by golfing course, unable to find its way back, and came up to a golfer wagging its tail.

The golfer, in turn, smashed the dog's skull with his golf club.

Why?

He states that he "saw a Pit Bull running towards him and protected" himself.

Now, if a poodle were to run up to you, would you hit it with a golf club?

There is no reason to kill, ban, or hurt an animal merely because it has a bad reputation. If a human bites someone, is their family banned?

In Denver Colorado last year, police were coming into homes and taking away any Pit Bull dog they found without warning the owner ahead of time.

Without even giving the dogs A CHANCE, they euthanized it, then left a mere note on the owner's door.

One of the dogs euthanized was a one month old Pit Bull puppy, owned by a mother and her 7 year-old daughter.

J.LO is LOW DOWN!!! Get J.Lo to stop promoting fur!

Jennifer Lopez has probably worn every animal there is to wear! No animal should be treated like dirt.

Baby wolves are hung by their feet, still fully concious, as the flesh is ripped from their bodies. Their necks and heads are stomped on to make them stop struggling. Some are still concious as their bloody bodies are thrown in a pile, slowly breathing, wanting to die.

If you are kind, caring, and just HUMANE, you will sign this petition to get J.Lo to take fur off her clothing line, and to stop wearing it! If you would like to learn more information, or watch some REAL videos (warning - content may disturb you), then head on down to http://www.jlodown.com.

Save Jumeirah beach in Dubai

The Jumeirah Beach in Dubai is a public beach in the superior sense of the word - it really does belong to the community, locals and expats alike.
We are sure there are many people out there that would feel deprived of their right to a better quality of life if that beach is closed.
The absurdity and greed of it all is obvious - does the government really need the money from another real estate development? - and we think it is time the citizens of Dubai take action and start showing what they think.

Please support this cause and pass it on to as many people as possible. We hope to raise 1000 signatures and present them to the Ruler of Dubai.

Petition Objecting to Special Protection Order for Irish Hares

We, the undersigned, wish to record formally our objection to the proposal by the Department of the Environment to make an Order prohibiting the killing, taking, selling or trading of Irish hares in Northern Ireland anytime from 19th January 2005 to 18th January 2006.

We believe that such an Order has no scientific basis, is detrimental to delivering concerted conservation action for Irish Hares, unfairly discriminates against responsible field sports and is based on personal prejudice.

Stop the Slaughter of Wolves in Alaska

Wolves are incredible creatures whom roam Alaska. Unfortunately, these great creatures are listed as an endangered species. Why? Famine sometimes plays a hand, but the main enemy of the wolf is humans. Because of their bad reputation, wolves have been over hunted, and humans have moved in on their territory. However, action is being taken to save the grey wolf, and numbers have been climbing. However, according to the Board of Games, apparently, this still endangered species is growing too much in Alaska. The organization decided to allow up to 900 wolves to be killed by the barbaric practice of aerial gunning. This brings us to the point of this petition: the slaughter must stop. It doesn't matter whether you are a lover of wolves and nature or not -massacring large numbers is not okay. Please spare a signature to help end this horrible ordeal, and if you can, also visit the website: www.wolfcampaign.org

Lack of Closed Season for Bass and Directed Effect on Tourism in Guernsey

guernseyfishing.com is a site dedicated to helping local and visiting anglers by offering up to date information about how and where to fish in the Bailiwick of Guernsey (includes the islands of Alderney, Sark and Herm).

We are asking whether the current large catches of bass off a local spawning ground will effect the local tourism industry as we try to work towards a closed season for this species in the future. This is to ultimately conserve the local and possible national bass stocks for the future.

More background information can be found here - http://www.freebb.com/viewtopic.php?t=28&freebb=guernseyfishing

We would like to ask current and potential visiting anglers whether this current bass fishing would make you question holidaying in Guernsey in the future?

If we can prove that it will make a difference then we have a strong case to put to the local State of Guernsey.

Our aim is to introduce a closed season or prevent fishing in this specific area during the spawning months.

Feel free to post any additional comments within this thread.
________________________________________________

We, the undersigned, agree that the Island of Guernsey needs a closed season for Bass to ensure that the spawning fish at the fishing mark known as Boue Blondel are protected. We would be strongly against holidaying in an Island that does not actively protect Bass stocks and permits the mass catching of spawning Bass.

Stop Chinchilla Cruelty!

“Grasping the chinchilla’s head and jaw, he arched the neck awkwardly backwards. The chinchilla squealed. The farmer then pulled sharply on the animal’s tail, breaking his neck. He tossed the jerking chinchilla to the floor, where the animal writhed in continuous spasms. We asked if he was ever bothered by the killings. “I don’t feel anything,” he replied, and moments later, added, “I could do this all day."

Disgusted yet? You should be, because this happens to thousands of these adorable, innocent animals in the name of fashion everyday. One voice has only a small chance of being heard, but thousands of voices can be deafening. Currently, there are no federal laws providing any protection for chinchillas and the millions of other animals who suffer and die on fur farms. Please sign below and tell Dr. W. Ron DeHaven that there needs to be humane regulations for the killings of these animals for their pelts put in place, or countless more animals will suffer.

Sweetheart Act: Federal Ban on Dog Fighting. Breed Specific Legislation and the Protection of Game Breeds

Sweetheart Act: Federal Ban on Dog Fighting. Breed Specific Legislation and the Protection of Game Breeds

The first point to get clear is 'pit bull' or 'pit bull' is not a breed; it is a nick-name or a type, just as a German Shepherd Dog is 'shepherd', or a Golden Retriever and a yellow or chocolate Labrador are 'retrievers'. The term 'pit bull' actually covers 5 breeds (6 including both color forms of the bull terrier). The term 'pit bull' has also been so totally warped by the media that the resultant monster one thinks of at the mention of that word is physically impossible. Quote taken from http://www.loveabull.org/pitbullinfo.htm

Many famous people have loved this breed and this petition is to restore the good name of the American pit bull Terrier. Michael J Fox, Helen Keller, Frankie Muniz, Teddy Roosevelt, John Stewart, Ashley Olsen, and Sinbad to name just a few. A common misconception is that pit Bulls are vicious Not according to the American Temperament Test Society. A recent study by this organization rates ALL the various bully breeds with passing rates of no lower than 83.9%. This is as good or better than many popular dogs today. For comparison, the Border collie only received an overall grade of 79.2%, and the Golden Retriever got 83.2%. These tests put the dogs through a series of confrontational situations. ANY sign of panic or aggression (with a minor exception for dogs TRAINED as guard/attack dogs) leads to failure of the test.
Q: Do pit bulls have locking jaws?
A: This is a popular myth. No they do not. There is no special structure or enzyme that allows a 'pit bull' to lock its jaws closed. Dr. I Lehr Brisbin of the University of Georgia states, "The few studies which have been conducted of the structure of the skulls, mandibles and teeth of pit bulls show that, in proportion to their size, their jaw structure and thus its inferred functional morphology, is no different than that of any breed of dog. There is absolutely no evidence for the existence of any kind of 'locking mechanism' unique to the structure of the jaw and/or teeth of the American Pit Bull Terrier." "Pit bulls" just have very strong jaws due to their bull-baiting background (look at those cheeks!) and are VERY tenacious.
Q: Aren't pit bulls able to bite with 1600-2000 lbs psi in bite pressure?
Sorry, wrong again. Dr. I Lehr Brisbin states, "To the best of our knowledge, there are no published scientific studies that would allow any meaningful comparison to be made of the biting power of various breeds of dogs. There are, moreover, compelling technical reasons why such data describing biting power in terms of 'pounds per square inch' can never be collected in a meaningful way. All figures describing biting power in such terms can be traced to either unfounded rumor or, in some cases, to newspaper articles with no foundation in factual data."
*UPDATE*UPDATE*UPDATE*UPDATE*UPDATE*UPDATE*
Dr. Brady Barr (PhD) actually tested the bite force of several schutzhund-trained dogs, including a Pit Bull named Aiden, with a bite meter inside the attack sleeve. His experiments were televised on a National Geographic show titled "Dangerous Encounters: Bite Force". The hardest bite he recorded from the Pit Bull was a mere 235 p.s.i. As they say on "Mythbusters", this one is officially "BUSTED!"
Q: Do pit bulls make good guard dogs?
A: Not generally. Most bully dogs are just too friendly. They are more likely to give a robber a guided tour of the house, and then beg for a ride in the getaway car, than they are to guard your 'stuff'. The exceptions are, because of their extreme loyalty, a bully will guard its owner if it feels its owner is in peril, so it’s a good dog to have at your side as you walked through that dark alley that may have muggers in it. Also due to their loyalty and eagerness to please, if the owner wants a dog to be aggressive toward humans and reinforces this behavior from an early age, the dog will most likely be aggressive towards humans as an adult.
Q: Don't only thugs, gangsters and drug dealers own pit bulls?
A: ABSOLUTELY NOT. (Gangsters, thugs and drug dealers own the ones they try to train to be people-aggressive, so we know which ones to steer clear of) Seriously, though, people from all walks of life own pit bulls. Some famous people to have owned pit bulls are: Helen Keller, Thomas Edison, General George Patton, President Theodore Roosevelt, Fred Astair, Jack Dempsey, Michael J. Fox, and Jan Michael Vincent.
Q: Won't a pit bull that shows aggression towards other animals go after PEOPLE NEXT?
A: Nope. Animal aggression and human aggression are two totally different things. I'm sure you've all heard someone say "Oh No! He went after my little Fifi! Your kids will probably be next!†This is one one of the biggest whopper myths out there. It's COMPLETELY 'normal' for a bully breed to be affectionate and loving with people, but not be totally trustworthy around other dogs or small animals. A properly raised and socialized bully should NEVER be human aggressive, IT IS NOT IN THEIR NATURE OR BREEDING. Bullies that do show aggressive behavior towards humans are NOT breed typical and should be seriously evaluated by a professional trainer to see what is causing it, or humanely euthanized.
Q: Should DOG AGGRESSIVE pit bulls be euthanized?
A: Since we just discussed that dog aggression does not equate with human aggression, there really is no need to "throw away" a dog aggressive bully dog just because it doesn't like other dogs. All the bully breeds are highly trainable and eager to please their owner, so even the more dog aggressive individuals can be RESPONSIBLY MANAGED by a smart and loving owner.
(*note: last two answers paraphrased from BadRap's website

I propose all persons purchasing a pit bull or pit bull mix must provide a photo id regardless of the source of the sale. The seller should be required to copy that information and file it in the proposed Bully Breed Adoption Registry kept at animal control, not to protect the public or invade privacy but to protect the animal from underground dog fighting rings. In the even that there are several dogs being fought and an owner does not step forward, the local animal control will be able to cross reference names and pets. Pitt Bulls should not be given as free to good home pets in the classifieds but rather turned into animal control who will ensure that these puppies are given a good home
I propose that there be a reward offered for information leading to the prevention or end of a dog fight. I am willing to donate $1000.00 towards that fund. That will generate more public cooperation in ending dog fighting rings. I also propose that when a dog fight is stopped, no matter if it’s before the fight during or after, that a $1000.00 fine per dog on the premises is imposed on the bystanders regardless of involvement. This will lead to more public cooperating in ending this brutal blood sport. Also if it is found that there is an owner or someone in charge of the event, usually the person holding the proceeds or bets, get a mandatory seven year prison sentence and while serving that time receive mandatory counseling and paying restitution that will fund the emergency vet clinics and the Dog Fight Prevention reward fund. I also propose that in fairness to the breed if there is a bite incident, that 2 veterinarians certify the breed. There are many APBT look alike, but only one APBT. This will help control the media frenzy and encourage many families to consider adopting these dogs which will also help heal this breed’s image and put them where they belong, with a loving family.

Meath on Track campaign

I fully support re-opening of commuter rail services to Meath, and believe that living in Meath and working in Dublin will be made much easier if this is to happen.

I believe that the solution to ending N3 commuter misery is simple, but the current rail solution on offer to commuters in Meath is inadequate.

The big problem with the Dunboyne extension is that it isn't a rail solution for Meath - it will go as far as the Dublin-Meath border where it stops, and most of us living in Meath will have to pay 2 M3 tolls each way to get there, as well as Park & Ride charges, and that is before we even pay for our rail tickets.

Promises of re-opening the line at a later date seem empty as building the M3 across the route of the old Navan line without putting in bridges to facilitate the lines re-opening means that it is unlikely that the Dublin-Navan line will ever be reopened again. The cost of re-opening the line if the M3 is built across it without bridges is likely to be prohibitive. An Bord Pleanála recently stipulated that the N6 bridge the route of the disused Limerick-Athenry line to facilitate the lines re-opening in future - why does the M3 not bridge the Dublin-Navan line?

I fully support the Meath on track campaign's 5 goals:

1. To ensure that the existing Navan-Drogheda-Dublin line remains in operation and opens to commuter trains.
2. To secure immediate provision of 2 non-stop express commuter trains from Navan to Dublin via the existing Navan-Drogheda-Dublin line, twice a day.
3. To ensure that the M3 plans are changed to bridge the Navan line at Cannistown, etc.
4. To scrap the token rail solution that is the Dunboyne extension plan in favour of re-opening NOW the Dublin-Navan-Kells line via Dunshaughlin & Ratoath.
5. To secure planning for re-opening of Broadstone Station in Dublin as a terminus for the Navan rail service (as it was in the past), to avoid IE's excuse of lack of station capacity.

Meath at present is suffering from an acute infrastructure deficit, and I believe that the Meath on track proposals must be met immediately.

Please read this page!
This email was sent to PETA:
<start>
I am against PETA and ALL it stands for. Letting show dogs out of their cage is right? Dogs are already domestic. All pets are all ready domestic. Everyone I meet that asks me about PETA I give them this link. PETA and to follow it! I would never donate nor join nor tell ANYone to. PETA is sick. Pit Bulls are amazing pets and they have bad reputation.! Ingrid got bit by one Pit Bull and now they are all bad? You say you are helping animals but your goal is to kill the domestic animals. What makes me sad is that you have a PETA Kid's?????? You would wreck most kid's lives my taking away pets. You come to pet fairs and you want no pets? Not the "Fish in Tanks - No Thanks"? You can't just let them swim into the ocean! Let Future Be Bright for Animals? Does this mean in heaven? Because this is opposite of what you really are. Oh and did you know most vegatarians and vegans get sick? There is vitamins they need in meats. They are not wild animals they are farm raised. If we killed none...they would be way to many animals in the world. I will do a petition and see how many people are against PETA and I WILL send it to you.

I strongly suggest World Of Warcraft! If you think RuneScape is unfair and takes to long to level up sign here! Other reasons why I don't like RuneScape is because the grapchis suck, the updates are a BIG disapointment and it offers no jobs in wich you can take to earn gold. This is a foolish game and it has no meaning. We MUST put a stop to RuneScape once and for all!

AAG: Urgent Bush Administration Action Needed on Global Climate Change

—AAG MEMBERS’ PETITION—

**YOUR SIGNATURE WILL NOT BE COUNTED UNLESS YOU ARE A MEMBER OF THE ASSOCIATION OF AMERICAN GEOGRAPHERS; IF YOU ARE NOT A MEMBER, PLEASE DO NOT SIGN**

To be submitted to the Executive Committee and Council of the Association of American Geographers for consideration at the 102nd Annual Meeting in Chicago, March 7-11, 2006

RESOLUTION: URGENT BUSH ADMINISTRATION ACTION NEEDED ON GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE

GIVEN:

That global climate change, with its attendant consequences of climatic region shifts, sea-level rise and island and coastal inundation, increases in anomalous weather events, the spread of disease vectors, agricultural impacts, increases in heat index (humidex) deaths and ailments, disruption of regional water resources, losses to soil moisture and prolonged persistent droughts in many regions (see supporting “Scientific Appendixâ€), does, in fact, represent a major threat to human and non-human populations, with potentially severe consequences to global economies, and indigenous livelihoods;

And, insofar as international scientific consensus points to anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions as a critical factor driving current global climate changes (see supporting “Scientific Appendixâ€);

And, insofar as a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions will act to slow the rate of these changes in global environments, giving societies more lead time to facilitate required adaptation in economies, settlement patterns, and lifestyles, as well as produce added benefits in improved health, species preservation, reduced acid deposition, and reduced pollution of the atmosphere, waterways, and oceans;

And, insofar as the countries of the world joined in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and established a Conference of the Parties (COP), with the Kyoto Protocol emerging from COP-3, the Rulebook from COP-7 in Marrakech, and COP-11 taking place in Montreal in December 2005;

And, in light of Russian ratification of Kyoto in November 2004, which made the Protocol on lowering greenhouse gas emissions international law in February 2005;

And, insofar as these agreements occurred without the participation of the United States, which acted with disruptive tactics at international meetings, and whose delegation walked out of the COP-11 proceedings in Montreal*, leads this Association to conclude that the current United States administration has consistently hindered international efforts to address global climate change…

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE ASSOCIATION OF AMERICAN GEOGRAPHERS HEREWITH ENJOINS THE CURRENT BUSH ADMINISTRATION TO IMMEDIATELY:

1. Accept and affirm the international scientific consensus on global climate change (see “Scientific Appendixâ€);

2. Act upon commitments made by the United States in the UNFCCC, May 9, 1992; ratify the Kyoto Process and Rulebook; accede to the Conference of the Parties; and affirm the International Polar Year for research and science, March 1, 2007 to March 1, 2009;

3. Cooperate fully with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the Artic Climate Impact Assessment (ACIA) of the Arctic Council, the European Environment Agency (EEA), and other governmental and nongovernmental organizations, as well as with the international community of countries, to better scientifically understand human-forced climate change and to develop sound policies to attenuate greenhouse gas emissions.

4. Affirm the essential role of integrative geographic science in synthesizing and analyzing global data in the pursuit of further understanding of global climate change and making informed policy decisions.

* See: http://unfccc.int/2860.php, unfccc.int/meetings/cop_11/items/3394.php, and for background, http://www.ipcc.ch/, and http://www.giss.nasa.gov/, among many others.

SCIENTIFIC APPENDIX

A small representative sample from the scientific literature:

1. Global scientific efforts established a substantial body of evidence and reached a consensus that present record land and sea temperature increases are anthropogenically forced—the result of increased levels of radiatively active greenhouse gases. The IPCC published its Third Assessment Report (earlier reports in 1990 and 1995), concluding, in part:

“…there is new and stronger evidence that most of the warming observed over the past 50 years is attributable to human activities….Both temperature and sea level are projected to continue to rise throughout the 21st century for all scenarios studied…. there is conclusive evidence for a worldwide recession of mountain glaciers.â€1

2. The ACIA (2004), following four-years of multidisciplinary research concluded in their report Impacts of a Warming Arctic, in part:

“Human activities, primarily the burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas), and secondarily the clearing of land, have increased the concentration of carbon dioxide, methane, and other heat-trapping (“'greenhouseâ€') gases in the atmosphere….this is projected to lead to significant and persistent changes in climate…these changes are projected to lead to wide-ranging consequences including significant impact on coastal communities, animal and plant species, water resources, and human health and well being.â€2

3. The EEA stated in its 2004 report, Impacts of Europe’s Changing Climate, in part:

“Due to human activities, the concentration of greenhouse gas has increased 34% compared with preindustrial levels….Europe has warmed more than the global average, with a 0.95 C° increase since 1990. Temperatures in winter increased more than in summer….Glaciers in eight out of nine European glacier regions are in retreat.â€3

4. All the scientific reports find that the high latitudes are being impacted at a far greater rate than the rest of the globe. According to both IPCC and ACIA research, the Arctic Region has been warming at a rate of 1.2 C° (2.2 F°) per decade since 1978, or about 5 C° (9 F°) during this time span. As a result, the Arctic Ocean pack ice shrunk to its lowest extent in the record in September 2005, a fourth low year in a row and less than the low ice periods in the 1930s and 1940s.4

5. Analysis of the Dome–C ice core on the East Antarctic Plateau, an 8-year project and part of a 10-country European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica (EPICA), affirms previous ice-core findings concerning present record levels of greenhouse gases. Results published in November 2005 stated that analysis is complete through the past 650,000 years and confirm that present levels of carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide are the highest in the entire record. Furthermore, the covariation between these radiatively active gases and climate previously identified in the Vostok, Antarctica ice core, are strikingly evident, further proving the link between climate and greenhouse gases. (This ice core is down to Marine Isotope Stage 18.4 level or 807,000 years B.P., as of 2004.)5

6. Declining glacial ice in the Andes, East Africa, Himalayas, and Western North American mountains are related to climate warming and significant water resource losses in affected regions. The Alaskan and Andean glacial melts alone account for more than 16% of global sea-level rise.6

7. Research establishes a new “total dissipation index†to rate the potential destructiveness, integrated over the lifetime, of tropical cyclones. This index is a gauge of storm intensity. The new research relates the marked increase in tropical cyclone intensity since 1970 as “...highly correlated with tropical sea-surface temperatures, reflecting well-documented climate signals...and global warming.†Among several conclusions: “...the near doubling of power dissipation over the period of record should be a matter of some concern, as it is a measure of the destructive potential of tropical cyclones.†This intensity in each storm is significant because we are in an increased cycle in terms of numbers—the 2005 season set many records including most named storms (27, average is 10; not ending until 1/6/2006), hurricanes (14, average is 5), and number of intense hurricanes category 3 or higher (7, average is 2). The forecast for 2006 is 17 named storms, 9 hurricanes, and 5 intense hurricanes.7

8. Surface albedo (the reflective quality of a surface) is a function of its color—dark is most absorptive, white is most reflective. Rising temperatures in the Arctic regions are leading to less Arctic Ocean pack ice (2005 was the lowest extent in pack ice in the record) and also reduced surface snow on land. This results in darker, more absorptive surfaces, with surface energy budgets approaching a dynamic threshold, a “tipping point.â€8

9. In many research papers in refereed journals: a warming signal and a rate of warming at a pace not in the instrument or proxy record; emissions of greenhouse gases continues to increase and will influence climatic trends through the 21st century; as temperatures increase sea-level rise continues at a record pace, with several island countries already beginning permanent evacuations; an earlier spring and later fall seasonal cycle is observed in all midlatitude and high latitude regions resulting in ecosystems dislocations of species and expected species behavior; record ocean temperatures to depth contribute to 25% of sea-level rise by thermal expansion; indigenous forms of economic activity are changing for high-latitude peoples; additional sources of carbon are emerging as permafrost and ground ice melt and active layers deepen, leading to added peat oxidation; increases in plant respiration across many biomes owing to nighttime warming dominance; the spread of disease vectors that lack thermostatic control and increase their range with increasing warmth and moisture, e.g., malaria, dengue fever, West Nile Virus, schistosomiasis, sleeping sickness; and, temperature increases are greater during nighttime and wintertime, as compared to daytime and summertime, strongly signaling present climate changes that are not part of any natural cycles.

10. The results of a survey of all 928 climate change papers published in refereed scientific journals between 1993 and 2003 (ISI database), were divided into six categories and analyzed. Naomi Oreskes stated, “Remarkably, none of the papers disagreed with the consensus position.†There is a scientific consensus that human activities are heating Earth’s surface and lower atmosphere. The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) concludes:

“This analysis shows that scientists publishing in the peer-reviewed literature agree with IPCC, the National Academy of Sciences, and public statements of their professional societies. Politicians, economists, journalists, and others may have the impression of confusion, disagreement, or discord among climate scientists, but that impression is incorrect….there is a scientific consensus on the reality of anthropogenic climate change.â€9

11. The 2001 IPCC Third Assessment Report temperature forecasts for the twenty-first century are, with the rates of change in the higher latitudes and polar regions about double that of the middle and lower latitudes according to IPCC and ACIA reports:

•High forecast: 5.8 C° (10.4 F°)
•Middle forecast: 3.6 C° (6.5 F°)
•Low forecast: 1.4 C° (2.5 F°).

The 2001 IPCC forecast scenarios for global mean sea-level rise this century, given regional variations, are:

•Low forecast: 0.09 m (3.5 in.)
•Middle forecast: 0.48 m (18.9 in.)
•High forecast: 0.88 m (34.7 in.)

(Noted is evidence that these sea-level rise figures need revision upward as the rate of increase is apparently accelerating.)

12. The National Research Council (NRC) in response to an administration request to investigate the IPCC scientific rigor confirmed that the IPCC Third Assessment Report, “…accurately reflects the current thinking of the scientific community on this issue.â€10

13. The IPCC Working Group III describes “No regrets†options in reduction of greenhouse gas emissions even if the consensus science proves incorrect, in that:

“No regrets options are by definition greenhouse gas emissions reduction options that have negative net costs, because they generate direct and indirect benefits that are large enough to offset the costs of implementing the options.â€11

Claims that curbing greenhouse gas emissions would damage the U.S. economy are not supported in the scientific literature. Five Department of Energy national laboratories, including Oak Ridge (ORNL), Lawrence Berkeley (LBNL), Pacific Northwest (PNNL), National Renewable Energy (NREL), and Argonne (ANL) reported that the U.S. can meet the Kyoto carbon emission reduction targets with negative overall costs (cash benefit savings) ranging from –$7 to –$34 billion.12

14. And that, as an example among many, climate change is accelerating biodiversity losses and increasing rates of animal and plant extinctions, such as the harlequin frog (Atelopus). Researchers attribute climate change related to global warming with the extinction of 67% of the 110 known species of this frog between 1975 and 2000. The integrated analysis links temperature increases, cloud-cover changes and albedo-cloud forcing, thus lowering surface temperatures below 25°C (77°F) permitting the sudden increase of an opportunistic skin fungus and decimating this indicator species.

“The powerful synergy between pathogen transmission and climate change should give us cause for concern about human health in a warmer world….The frogs are sending an alarm call to all concerned about the future of biodiversity and the need to protect the greatest of all open-access resources—the atmosphere.â€13

The unlawful wolf-killings that prompted the criminal charges imposed on one of three hunter-pilot teams permitted by the state to shoot wolves near McGrath is utterly predictable. Permit-holders may well view the shooting opportunity as open-ended, and go anywhere to kill wolves. It’s lucky that David Haeg and Tony Zellers were caught.

The Daily News-Miner’s editorial skips the facts about the McGrath wolf-control program. Originally, the McGrath area included 1,700 sq. miles. Wolf killers couldn’t find any wolves in this area despite Alaska’s Department of Fish & Game’s (ADF&G’s) assurances that the area contained too many wolves, so ADF&G expanded the control area to provide wolves to kill. This is really just a letter that everyone should sign. All the wolves are doing is eating their natural food. They don't deserve to be shot.

Students in Support of Sustainable Sources of Energy at Emory University

Emory is Average

Emory might be ranked one of the top 20 universities in the nation academically, but when it comes to campus sustainability and energy conservation, we are just plain average. While Emory has taken several steps to enhance the sustainability of the campus, we still received an overall grade of ‘C’ in the College Sustainability Report Card released by the Sustainability Endowments Institute, which rates the policies and programs of 100 leading universities in seven different categories.

Emory currently has five buildings on campus certified by the United States Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), giving Emory the most “green†buildings of any university in the country. Emory trustees have also committed to making all future buildings abide by the LEED guidelines and have set the goal of receiving Gold certification from the USGBC throughout the campus. But Emory must continue to develop its sustainability initiatives in order to stay in step with other major universities, like Harvard, Dartmouth and Stanford, each of which received sustainability grades of “A-“.

An area of great concern to many is that Emory must improve the source from which we receive our energy. Emory received a climate change and energy grade of “C,†while more than half of the schools surveyed received a grade of B or higher (21 A’s, 31 B’s). Emory currently receives energy from Georgia Power, which utilizes coal-burning plants that contribute greatly to air pollution without offering any type of renewable energy credits program. Emory justifies the purchase of environmentally harmful energy from Georgia Power because we receive it at a great discount.

One solution to this energy dilemma could be the installation of solar photovoltaic panels on building rooftops. Emory’s Oxford campus is already considering putting in PV panels on their new buildings, yet so far the administration and Board of Trustees at Emory proper have been hesitant to employ this environmentally safe form of energy because it is so expensive.
But there are ways to lower the cost of installing PV arrays. The sustainability office is currently working with GE Power to explore the possibilities of installing PV panels for free and having Emory pay them based on the amount of power we use from these solar panels. Even though Emory’s current arrangement with Georgia Power is able to obtain energy cheaply, we must start to look into other environmentally friendly forms of energy, such as solar power. This will not only help preserve the environment but also show that Emory can be a leader in sustainability among academic institutions.
The Emory Sustainability Initiative office has put a lot of effort into transforming Emory into a more environmentally-conscious campus, but they do not have the ultimate say in where Emory’s energy comes from. Therefore, we the students must put pressure on the administration and Board of Trustees to start committing funds to such programs, even if they may be more expensive. To stay competitive in the sustainability arena, Emory must look past its bottom line and focus on becoming more environmentally conscious. Emory is known for its large endowment, yet several schools with smaller pools of funding have managed to top our score in the report card.
If Emory wants to become a leader in higher education, it must earn it by not settling for this mediocrity in the arena of campus sustainability.

If you agree with our cause, please lend your support by adding your signature to this petition.

Legalize Rabbits in Queensland!

It is unbelievable that the Queensland government has banned the keeping of rabbits as pets in Queensland. In all other states of Australia, their keeping is legal.

What is the governments' argument against keeping pet rabbits?

Well, Queensland authorities seem to have adopted a hysterical view that if the keeping of pet rabbits is legalised, the State will be over-run by colonies of rabbits establishing themselves in the wild and becoming a threat to the environment.

This is impossible if the rabbit is de-sexed, which should be compulsory, unless it is being kept for breeding purporses. Also, an escaped rabbit would barely last a day in the wild. Being raised in captivity, it wouldn't know how to fend for itself.

I know from personal experience that domestic rabbits make fabulous pets. They make little noise, they do not kill native animals and birds, and they are by no means dangerous. I believe that the keeping of domestic rabbits in the state of Queensland, Australia should be made legal under the conditions that the rabbit is de-sexed so as to prevent unwanted breeding, and breeding should only be legal with a government-obtained permit.

Rabbits make truly wonderful companions, and it is a shame that Queensland citizens cannot enjoy them as pets. Please sign this petition, and legalise the keeping of rabbits in Queensland! Thankyou.

Save Trestles & San Mateo Creek...STOP THE 241 TOLL ROAD THRU S. ORANGE COUNTY & N. SAN DIEGO COUNTY

We oppose ANY further extension of the 241 Foothill Toll Road. Currently ending at OSO Parkway, beyond it is a thriving wildlife environment and then, near its proposed end where it would intersect with the I-5 is the beautiful blue Pacific Ocean. This toll road (expected to cost the wary consumer taxpayer up to $12.00 each way) would totally devastate the local environment. Rather than alleviate traffic on the I-5 as proponents have claimed, new studies(see L.A. Times article, November 14th, 06') suggest just the opposite, increasing traffic!! Resulting in the permanent closure of 60% of the San Onofre Beach Park, which was set aside for future generations by Ronald Reagan in 1971, the loss of 161 excellent campsites at the San Mateo Creek Campground would also occur and the road will be within 400 feet of the campground! Ever camped next to a freeway? Not enjoyable, NOT why we go camping... Also affected would be seven (known) archaeological sites, including one Native American site, which would be lost forever or suffer irreparable damage. The associated pollution factors are revoltingly astonishing as well, in particular near the ocean. The road runoff effects of heavy metal toxins such as lead, zinc, cadmium and nickel will do permanent damage as they seep into the ground and are carried to the nearby ocean, to eventually trickle into the food chain. That is only a SMALL part of the never ending effects that also include noise pollution, ambient light pollution, loss of endangered species (11 identified federally endangered or threatened species are located there, including the Southern Steelhead Trout in the San Mateo Creek) and lands and waterways that will be lost forever. There is also the premier surfing spot called Trestles (so named because of a railroad crossing we currently walk under from the campgrounds), which hosts many surfing events and is a most beautiful spot with fantastic breaks. Mentioned in the Beach Boys "Surfin' USA", anyone who has ever gone there will not forget the joy and delight it brings to be at such a breathtaking Pacific Ocean spot - wonderfully, one of Southern California's better places to visit and enjoy. As Citizen of this Planet Earth, your signature is important to preserving this currently pristine and undisturbed area. Stop the 241Toll Road! Please sign this petition and forward it to everyone!

Stop Animal Abuse, Inhumane Slaughter, and Animal Testing

Help stop animal abuse. There's no reason for innocent animals to be beated, burnt, thrown out windows. forced to fight, whipped, chained up, and even killed. It has to stop.
There's no way on this earth slaughter can stop completley. We need meat. Eating it is part of the food chain. But to torture the animals before you kill them and make them suffer is wrong. Cows have their throats slit while still alive and able too feel. Baby pigs are burried alive and have thier tails cut off, with no anistedic. Chickens and ducks are force fed and grow so large so quick that the can't even stand. That's not even the worst of it. They should at least make sure the animal cant feel and it killed painlessly. And their living conditions must inprove. All the animals should be able to mave freely, during travel and where they live, not crammed so tightly they can't move. At least make their lives happy while they're alive, not miserable. Like I said before, slaughter can't stop, but at least we can make it humane and painless and make the animals have a happy life before they die.
Animal testing is pointless. We don't need any more make up, shampoo, or any of that stuff. we have enough and there's so need for it to be tested on animals. The testing animals go through unimmaginable pain and suffering that they really don't need to go through. PETA has a poem of lab animal's lives: Unseen they suffer. Unheard they cry. In agony they linger. In lonliness they die. That sums of the life of testing animals. You don't need to test medicine on animals either. There are better ways than harming animals. Cell structures, computer models, and willing people (which there are!)
Basically, people should consider how animals feel, bucause they have feelings, just like us. Stop putting yourself so high above them. People couldn't win against many animals with out a gun. We're a lot stupider than them when it comes to surviving. People couldn't live like the animals do, without technology. So stop mistreating the animals. They have feelings, life, family, and they deserve to live equally happy lives. Do something to help. Sign this petition to help all animals.

Suggested Changes to Fishing Regulations on Upper Delaware

New York State DEC has proposed changes to trout fishing regulations on the Upper Delaware River System that we feel may be detrimental to the river and its wild trout fishery.

Current Regulation: Season closes in the spawning tributaries on September 30th.

Proposed Change: Extend Season to October 15th.

Our Concern: This extention could expose prespawn wild brown trout to over harvesting. The water conditions in the tributaries could be low and clear making wild browns susceptible to poaching.

Our Suggestion: Make no change to tributary season. Close season on September 30th.

Current Regulation: Season closes on Upper West Branch September 30th.

Proposed Change: Extend season to October 15th. The existing no-kill will remain no-kill through October 15th and the catch and keep areas will remain open for harvest until October 15th.

Our Suggestion: Extend season on this entire section to October 15th, but make this entire area no-kill during this extended period.

Thank you for your consideration of these suggestions.

Anti Horse Slaughter

Horses have carried man through time, and now it's the age of the auto mobile, so the horse is slaughtered. That's not right!! Horses are like angels, they carry us through the oceans of hardship... they give us wings that let us fly into the clouds of happiness, soar away, and capture our dreams.. so why slaughter them?
Horse slaughter, as many know, is not a humane way of death. In fact, it is far from it, with the horses being abused and tortured from the beginning of their journey to death. Horses that go to the slaughter houses are usually sold at auctions. Here, people called ‘killer buyers’ who
work for slaughter houses, bid for the horses there and send them straight to the slaughter house without awareness of their owners. This leads to many cases of horse theft and is a problem in the United States as well as Canada.
Horses are loaded up and sometimes dragged by chains into trailers, sometimes inhumane double-decker cattle trailers, which are illegal in some states. The horses Often travel hundreds of miles without food, water, or rest. These horses, once arriving at the Slaughter house, are taken out of the trailer and loaded into boxes where they are shot with a captive bolt gun, which drives a spike into their skull. These once majestic animals devoted to working for us now become human food.
In a lunch session at the slaughterhouse, a horse jumped out of its pen and came unnoticed up to some slaughter men who were sitting in a circle eating some sandwiches; the horse approached and nibbled a small piece of lettuce that a man was holding in his hand. The men gave the horse some more lettuce and when the lunch period was over they were so affected by the action of the horse that not one of them was
prepared to kill this creature, and it had to be sent away elsewhere – showing that within each human soul there is an element of pity, compassion and love. It is our duty to encourage the higher qualities to bloom and blossom wherever possible in each individual.
Now our struggle to help our saviors begins, and hopefully will have a happy ending, when people realize that horses aren't livestock, they aren't food, but compastionate and devoted animals.

Stop Shark Finning!

The next time shark fin soup sounds good to you, think again. Sharks are caught for their fins [approximently 3-5% of their body weight], which are then cut off. Then the shark is thrown back, sometimes still alive. This means that about 95% of the shark is wasted. Sharks can't regenerate their fins, so they sink to the bottom, where they drown, starve, bleed to death, or are eaten alive by other sharks.
This horrible practice is banned in several countries, but in others, it is legal, and shark fin soup is a delicacy. You can help stop this awful practice by not eating shark fin soup. With no demand, there will be no supply. So stop shark finning!

Please send this to anyone you know that might be concerned. Thanks for your help and please help the fight against not only cruelty towards Chinchillas, but other animals as well. There's no reason why real animals should be used for something that could be made faux for so much cheaper.

Requiring Flood Control Operation of New York City Reservoirs

We the Undersigned wish to require New York City Department of Environmental Conservation to release water from Cannonsville, Pepacton and Neversink Reservoirs when snowpack is present and whenever reservoirs are in danger of spilling. The objective would be to create a void in these reservoirs when snowpack is present or in times of extrordinary hydrologic conditions. Flooding downstream from these reservoirs would be dramatically reduced, saving lives and untold millions in property damage. These releases can be made without risk to New York City water supply. An added benefit would be to help stabilize flows and increase the ecological health of downstream rivers.

Hello all, Please repost this in your myspace, or forward via e-mail to someone... Anyone.

http://www.peta2.com/takecharge/t-wetseal.asp

Thank you for your time. Let me start off with I am a VERY busy person; because of something I just glanced at, I am taking the time out of MY day to incite a movement that needs to take place and needs to be done NOW.

With every iota of my being, I sadly feel that you need to visit this web site. There is a movie on the opening page that I feel every person, not just Americans need to watch. Here is the address: http://www.peta2.com/takecharge/t-wetseal.asp

I am sorry that I need to be here to address a situation that should never take place on this earth. Long story short, I am doing what I can to begin a movement that I will take as far as I can to Ban both the sale and purchase of Wet Seal pelts.

I know that I am only one person, but I am hoping that with your voice, when we speak together someone will hear us.

  Thanks again for your time,
