We just want our children to have the same 4 year experience every other 9 - 12 grade students are currently given. Jasper is not to be split by any of the current board plans but a new plan is being recommended (CW-1m) that would split Jasper and according to all past board recommendations no school in Plano was to split after the new senior high school was built. Each senior high school was to have 2 high schools as feeder schools. Under the current split system at Jasper we have sports teams, academic programs, band, theater, choir etc, all trying to teach programs for 2 senior high schools thus the Jasper students are a great disadvantage when arriving at their senior high. They have to separate from their friends as well as not be well prepared in all of the senior high\'s programs because they were being taught programs of the other senior high school. They do not have a chance of leadership positions because they are a significant minority in the senior high school. It is affecting their chances of getting scholarships as well their self esteem. While we acknowledge the difficulties which the current financial crisis presents to the College, we feel that the costs of losing a Linguistics Program far outweigh the cost-saving benefits which cutting such a program would provide. The benefits that come with a healthy Linguistics Program are many, and accrue even to students not taking Linguistics classes. Without a Linguistics Program, the study of languages at Williams takes a great blow, as Linguistics provides a framework for the analysis of language itself, without which languages exist in a vacuum. But Linguistics is also central in disciplines such as Psychology, Cognitive Science, Philosophy, Comparative Literature, and even Mathematics. Linguistics is also an established academic field in its own right, a field which helps many in the development of a successful career. Linguistics applies Division III logic and reasoning to disciplines considered in the domain of Divisions I and II. As a Liberal Arts college committed to providing students with a holistic education, Williams’ curriculum would suffer greatly from the loss of such an interdisciplinary program. As a Liberal Arts college competing for students who are also applying to other Liberal Arts schools, Williams needs to remain competitive in order to continue to attract the talented and diverse student body it currently boasts. Linguistics is an integral part of being a complete liberal-arts institution. Schools such as Swarthmore, Haverford, and Bryn Mawr boast entire departments devoted to Linguistics, which not only gives them a recruitment edge, but also supports their extensive foreign languages and literatures program. As proud Williams students, we wish to see our institution leading its peers in all fields, not falling into the middle of the pack. According to Professor Nathan Sanders, roughly 5 - 10% of all Williams students take Linguistics classes over the course of their careers. This amounts to at least 25 – 50 students per class year, or at least 100 – 200 students on campus at any given time. This critical mass provides a strong answer to those who might argue that because of the small number of Linguistics Majors over the years, the program has little relevance for the student body as a whole. As previously stated, a grounding in Linguistics can be useful for students of all disciplines, regardless of how many choose to major in the subject. In the light of the aforementioned points, we propose the following. To secure the future of Linguistics, we propose two basic options. In our best-case scenario, a visiting professor would be hired for the coming year to teach Linguistics 100 and at least one other course. We recognize the difficulties of the current situation, and so we propose another option, modeled on the Critical Languages program, in which a Professor is connected with interested students who learn via virtual classrooms. We feel that interest in the Linguistics program is more than enough to justify temporarily integrating Linguistics into this existing rubric. Due to the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences’ financial difficulties, all FASS students’ courses are being restricted, and students have not being advised that their electives are being limited. From 2010, the number of classes to be run will be drastically cut. Class sizes will be increased, with 30 or more students in theory and non-lab production subjects, and 20 or more in lab classes. According to the Dean’s newsletter these class sizes are “optimal” and not a maximum: some classes could be bigger than 30 students. Current first-year students in straight communications degrees will have to make their one sub-major choices now, rather than being able to choose two electives and from these pick sub-majors later in their degree. Current second-year students are having extreme difficulty enrolling into higher-level 200 or 300 courses and finishing their majors to a professional multi-skilled standard. Single degree students are being disadvantaged by being given access to enrolments a week later than combined degree students. Combined degree students are not being fully informed of exchange requirements and could miss out. You are probably having trouble enrolling online for next year’s subjects. If you are, you won’t be aware that you might have already been locked out of subject choices for the coming year. Students are not being told that they: might not get the sub-majors or electives they want; might not be able to get multiple majors; and might not graduate as multi-skilled professionals. Santa Clara University should also look into lobbying Caltrain to increase potential student\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s commute option. The two should work together in the future to ensure proper commute options for students as well. There are no current southbound train that stops at Santa Clara station that allows students to make the 545 class start time. However, there is a 433pm bullet train that passes and doesn\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'t stop at the station. There is also a 427 limited train that gets to Santa Clara at 547 which is 2 mins pass class start. Adding a stop on the 433PM southbound bullet at Santa Clara and have northbound the train leave at 845PM instead of 835PMfrom Santa Clara would greatly help out current and potential students commuting from the North Bay. The SCU evening program starts at 545 and runs to 835 Mon-Thurday. These experiences helped to shape me into the man I am today. My entrée into music was the string education program in the Jackson Public School System. 26 years ago I was a new 4th grade student at Isabel elementary under the leadership of the late Mr. Cleo McGee. My music teacher was Mrs. Nadine Smith. My homeroom teacher was the late Mrs. M.B. Jones, also a musician. Under this administration I was introduced to Mrs. Debra Gum, a member of the Mississippi Symphony. She introduced me to the violin, viola, cello and bass. It was an experience that would change my life forever. In 1984 my family relocated to Texas where I continued my musical studies. The string program in JPS prepared me for my Texas musical experience. I was able to attend and graduate in the top 10% from the Houston High School for the Performing and Visual Arts Had it not been for my JPS introduction to strings, I am not sure that I would have had the various opportunities I’ve already mentioned. My musical training has helped me achieve great academic success. Many of my music teachers have been great mentors and even father figures as I am the product of a single parent home. My music education has kept me out of trouble. It all started in the Jackson Public School System. The recent decision of the JPS Board to cut the string program - in my professional opinion - is a major mistake and one that if not reconsidered will have far greater repercussions than we are able to see now.
