End School Uniforms for Good

We need to end the pain that comes with these uniforms. You say that they end bullying over clothes, but you have basically started new ones. People are picked on because of how their belt looks, because khaki doesn\\\\\\\'t look well on them, even because they don\\\\\\\'t seem to wear it right. This is a lot of mutiny, and if we were at least allowed to wear jeans and a t-shirt, both of which you have forbidden, maybe things would look a lot better. And here is one other thing that bugs me: you identify us by the color pants we wear? That makes us feel very uncomfortable and worthless sometimes.

Apollo High School has recently decided, out of the blue, that students, starting on January 4th, 2010, will no longer be able to carry and sort of bag or backpacks. They will be forced to have a locker, and carry their books around with them during school. This is unreasonable, as we students have been carrying backpacks and bags since Middle School. We have had the option of either a backpack or locker since then. Now, it is about to change, and I say, as a fellow Junior attending Apollo High School, that this is at the utmost importance that we do NOT let this happen. Please join me, and help me and yourself, and stop the new no-backpack rule!

Save the Buddhist Studies Program

The undersigned students taking courses in the Buddhism, Psychology and Mental Health Program at New College, and in Buddhist Studies in the Department of Religion are concerned by rumors that Buddhist Studies is in trouble. We hear that two Religion professors in East Asian Buddhism are being recruited by another university in the U.S. The University of Toronto has in the past attempted to match such offers in order to retain world-class faculty. Up to today, however, we understand it has made no counter-offer to this valuable pair of teachers and research specialists in East Asian Buddhism and has even proposed to discontinue at least one of these positions altogether! This is not the way to promote diversity, and will strain the connections to the diverse Toronto Buddhist community that have been built up over the past few years. Indeed the loss of these two East Asian Buddhism professors will threaten the destruction of the vibrant and internationally renowned Buddhist Studies program, and students interested in such a program will go elsewhere.

We ask that the University invest in the future and make every effort to keep these two here. If those efforts fail, we seek assurances that there will be a tenure-track replacement for the current tenure-track faculty member. We know that these are difficult times for the University, but we also know the Central Administration still has some discretion as to how to spend its resources. We encourage it to use that discretion wisely, and to Save Buddhist Studies!

Help Joclynn Graduate With Her Class

Joclynn has worked hard her whole life and has always believed she would graduate. She didn\'t even have to be told to do her homework. Joclynn made Honer Roll twice in one year and several times since. Her plan is to go to college and become an anesthesiologist. All of this can be ripped away from her because of a stupid mistake. When Joclynn was 15 years old one of her uncles gave her a knife to use for protection only. When she turned 16 and got her first car, her uncle insisted she carry the knife with her, so she threw it in the center console of her car. Now a year and a half later she had completely forgot about it when the High School she attended hired a company that train police dogs to come in and do random searches on the vehicals in the school parking lot. One of the dogs laid down next to her car and she was then asked if they could search her car and of course, not having anything to hide, she said that it would be fine. They believe the reason the dog chose her car was because of an Inhaler and Amoxicillion that she kept in her car at all times, both were prescribed to her by her family physician. And after finding the knife the next thing she knows she\'s suspended from school pending the school boards desision on whether to expel her from school indefinitely and stripping her right to graduate with her class. Her mother has already purchased her cap and gown. The same day all this happened she found out that she had been excepted into the Davenport College in Grand Rapids Michigan. She also worked for Don Rypma in Whitehall Michigan for two years and Baker College for two summers. She was in training and about to try out for a cheerleading position. This is not your run of the mill case, Joclynn is a very responsible and caring person. We all wish to protect our children and yes sometimes we go to far, but she did not know or even think about the law in this case. She\'s just a kid with a very bright future-If they don\'t take it away from her. Please help by signing this petition. Thankyou!

Petition to allow Rhodes to remain 7-9

The Mesa School District has proposed 8 recommendations that would change the make up of West Mesa, including Rhodes Jr High World Studies Academy and Dobson High School. Under the recommendations, freshman from seven Jr Highs would be moved to three area High Schools. While some Jr Highs will be turned into focus schools that will include grades K-8, Rhodes Jr High World Studies Academy will only maintain grades 7 and 8. By signing this petition you are acknowledging the hardwork and dedication on the Rhodes campus by students, staff and the community in accomplishing the following;
1. Increased enrollment in direct opposition to projected decreasing growth trends.
2. Increased AIMS test scores in reading, writing & math despite the fact that Rhodes went from partial to full Title 1.
3. Increased Rhodes community & academic effectiveness via the proactive pursuit of partnerships with the World Affairs Council of AZ, Mesa Community College, City of Mesa, ASU\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s Confucius Institute, & Chinese American Community.
4. Enhanced reputation with the AZ Department of Educations, International Schools Division via Administration and staff leadership roles on the AZ Department of Educations International Schools Committee

By Signing this petition you are requesting that Rhodes remain a World Studies Academy that houses grades 7-9 as an alternative to those seeking options and a World Studies focus. This will allow Rhodes Jr High World Studies Academy to maintain a comprehensive curriculum & a true World Studies Academy model.

Grant Dr. Jeremy A. Ervin Tenure at MUC

Professor Ervin\'s teachings exemplify exactly what Mount Union requires of their teacher candidates: Competence, Capability, and Caring. Most all Education majors agree that he is one of the strongest professors in the Education department and we are lucky to have him. We are signing this petition to officially voice our disagreement with the refusal to grant tenure to Dr. Jeremy A. Ervin. This petition will be sent to Dr. Richard F. Giese, school president and to Dr. Patricia Draves, Dean of College and vice president of academic affairs.

Notes on Signing Petition:
1. Please explicitly indicate your affiliation with Mount Union College in the comments section.

2. Please refrain from negative comments towards the dean or any other MUC officials. Our goal is to get Professor Ervin the tenured position that he deserves, not to condemn anyone for following bureaucratic protocol.

YEAR 13 GRADUATION DINNER

To the students of Year 13 if you haven\'t already heard there are five students who have been told they cannot attend Graduation Dinner due to an incident where they turned over a concrete table tennis table, causing it to be damaged, and then went on to littering the school.

They will be paying reparation for their part of the table tennis table and have already missed out on our year 13 fun activities after School finished for us. Some of those students also missed out on the special luncheon that was put on for us where we were presented with our ties and scarves.

Even though these students made a mistake, these mistakes in context of their 5-7 years at Saint Kentigern College are quite small and why are they not graduating with the rest of us who have also made mistakes???

As a Year 13 2009 Family we ask that you stand up and support these fellow brothers of Saint Kents to have the right of passage that we all do and sign this petition in support of them attending the Graduation Dinner.

If you too have made mistakes, which we all learn from then sign this petition as the students involved would fight in the trenches for you, like we should now fight in the trenches for them.

Support Akiba-Barrack Teachers

Dear Co-Alumni and other friends,

I am writing to encourage you to support our Akiba-Barrack teachers as they negotiate with the School Board for a fair compensation and benefits agreement. As you may or may not be aware, the amazing teachers that we have had over the years make far less than industry average for teachers of their education and tenure. As I am sure that you do know, they do so because they love the students and they believe in the top-notch education provided by the school. The collective bargaining negotiations undertaken recently between the teachers and the board have not been met with agreement. I have set up an online petition which I ask that you sign, in support of the teachers and their commitment to resume teaching as quickly as possible.

I myself was not eager when my parents told me that I would be attending high school at Akiba. I had attended a public junior high school and had already built my network of friends there; at the age of 13, I recall that this seemed the most important consideration. Looking back, however, I certainly realize how lucky I was to have this first class education. I experienced memorable bible stories brought alive by Rabbi Steve Stroiman, developed my passion for math in Mrs. Shrager and Mrs. Perez’s classes, and was pushed to produce the best writing that I could in Mrs. Schuman’s class. Many other teachers at Akiba-Barrack contributed greatly to my education and many others contribute with the same enthusiasm to the education of today’s students. In retrospect, the education that I received at Akiba was an integral force in making me who I am today, building to my confidence and professionalism. I am working towards my Executive MBA, and have a successful career as Product Marketing Manager for a leading stock option software and administration company in Calgary, Alberta; I believe that Akiba’s teachers played a huge role in my success.

Since moving on from my own education at Akiba, I have come across many people in my experiences - but I can honestly say that I have not seen many more dedicated and passionate people than the teachers at Akiba. My mother has been a teacher at Akiba-Barrack for almost 20 years; she is always telling me of the exciting new tools that she is using in the classroom, the new course outline she has planned for the coming semester, the classes she herself is taking to ensure she is up-to-date on all the latest to share with her students. She is not required to do all of these things, but wants to out of her desire to make the classes she teaches the best they possibly can be.

All of this hard work and commitment should be fairly recognized. With the teacher’s union now on strike, I am learning that some things are not, in fact, quite as fair as they should be. I think most would agree that though the old Akiba building may be extremely nostalgic to many of us, it is great that the students of today have a new and upgraded building to enjoy their education. Yes, it is great to have a new structure and facility and to have a hard-working administrative staff, but if this comes at the expense of the teachers’ benefits, it may not be the best for the school and its current student body.

As many of us are removed from the intricacies of a teacher’s world, I will outline some facts which I have recently learned:

•	The teachers are not paid while on strike, and their health insurance coverage is terminated during this time
•	Though the current proposal is for no salary increases in the first of a three year contract, the teachers are willing to agree to this term even though they are now contributing more of the health insurance premiums – meaning they will take home less net pay
•	The main sticking point is the reduced pension contributions proposed by the board – to you and I pensions are not likely a norm, but in a private school where the salaries are 15% lower than they should be, this is a major benefit which they rely upon to secure their retirement – this is what helps to keep great teachers at Akiba-Barrack
•	A teacher at Akiba with a PhD makes barely $60,000, while some administrators working at the same school with a much lower education make easily twice that amount
•	Another underlying issue behind these negotiations is the sense that the school board is trying to break up the teachers union – the union is in place to protect the teachers’ benefits and some may consider teaching elsewhere if the union is not there to represent their interests

The quality of the education afforded by Akiba-Barrack is at stake and I strongly urge you to join me in supporting the teachers that have given their time and their hearts to developing us as successful young adults.

Yours sincerely,
Neta Rosenkrantz-Pyasi

Math is boring not hard

I think that the questions on my math books are too easy, too useless and most importantly, POINTLESS. I mean all the things that they are asking me is for first graders, I learned all of those in 1st grade! My friends and I agree that the reason only dum people or nerdy geeks likes math is because it\'s either too easy and they think their so smart, or for nerds case, they have advanced into a higher math level. Not excactly what the so called adult writters planned. I mean, the school\'s principal in my school claimed that we have new math books this year, but the questions were excactly the same as last years, only stupidder. I mean, I\'m on Vancouver, BC, a place known for where Chinese People usually move to, and they are really smart, like REALLY smart, and the goverment gives us what? Easy math books like as if he/she thinks that kids in elementary are that dum. Its just descrimination!

Now parents, you want your kids to have a good college degree right? Well, if you sign this petition, your kids will do math in school based not only on their grade level, but how good they can comprehend in math at their own level.

Sincerly,
Katie

Tenure for Prof. Sarah Raymundo Now!

AN APPEAL TO U.P. PRESIDENT ROMAN AND THE BOARD OF REGENTS
TO GRANT PROF. SARAH RAYMUNDO TENURE*

WE, FACULTY MEMBERS, ADMINISTRATIVE staff, REPS, students and concerned individuals, appeal to University of the Philippines (U.P.) President Emerlinda Roman and the Board of Regents (BOR) to grant Sociology Professor Sarah Raymundo the tenure she truly deserves.

On October 28, 2009, U.P. Diliman Chancellor Sergio Cao ruled against Prof. Raymundo’s appeal for tenure. This decision, which came after almost a year since Prof. Raymundo first appealed to his office in November 2008, is flawed and unjust. We raise the following major points against Chancellor Cao’s decision to deny Prof. Raymundo’s tenure:

A.) PROFESSOR RAYMUNDO HAS FULLY SATISFIED ALL THE ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS FOR TENURE:
1.	The Sociology Department and the College Executive Board of the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy (CSSP) never, at any instance, questioned Prof. Raymundo’s academic excellence in the longstanding issue of her tenure appeal.
2.	The majority of Prof. Raymundo’s tenured colleagues, as stated in their original justification for recommending her tenure, acknowledge her \"excellent quality of mind,\" \"expansive intellectual interest,\" \"competence in current and emerging academic discourses (as) reflected in her teaching\" and \"capability to engage in sustained scholarship.\"
3.	Prof. Raymundo exceeded the minimum tenure requirements set by her department and college. Thus, it puzzles us why the Chancellor applied the tenure requirements of the College of Science (CS) to Prof. Raymundo, a CSSP faculty member; unless the Chancellor undermines the tenure requirements of CSSP and other non-CS units.

B.) PROFESSOR RAYMUNDO’S DENIAL OF TENURE IS POLITICAL PERSECUTION IN THE GUISE OF ACADEMIC EVALUATION:
1.	Testimonies detailing alleged instances of Prof. Raymundo\'s \"breach of professional ethics\" or \"dishonesty\" are all personal opinions of three or four individuals coming from the Sociology Department. These \"facts\" have neither been established by consensus nor adequately supported by any investigation undertaken by the Department itself.
2.	In the minority report dated October 17, 2008 sent to Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (VCAA) Lorna Paredes, three tenured faculty members (Profs. Marcia Fernandez, Clarissa Rubio and Marie Arguillas) of the Sociology Department strongly opposed to Prof. Raymundo\'s tenure presented their own \"facts\" and a (contentious) \"interpretation of a poem\" which merely represented their own opinions and not that of the Department itself. One issue hurled at Prof. Raymundo is her alleged failure to uphold the truth by not clarifying that Karen Empeno had an AWOL status at the time of her abduction during a University Council (UC) meeting in 2006.
3.	However, during the same UC meeting, presiding officer Chancellor Cao affirmed Karen’s status as a student of the university, despite her AWOL status.
4.	The Fernandez-Rubio-Arguillas minority report finally confirms that Prof. Raymundo is being denied tenure based entirely on her progressive positions, not on academic merits. Chancellor Cao skirts the real issue of Prof. Raymundo’s tenure struggle by turning Prof. Raymundo’s case of political persecution into a matter of academic, including ethical, requirements.

C.) PROFESSOR RAYMUNDO’S TENURE CASE WAS NOT GRANTED FAIR AND DUE PROCESS:
1.	Chancellor Cao ignored Prof. Raymundo’s repeated appeals that the reasons behind the Sociology Department’s non-recommendation of tenure be made known to her.
2.	Regardless of the number of times she met with the tenured faculty, Prof. Raymundo has never been given the opportunity to answer the allegations against her. The specific allegations and the supposed evidences supporting these have never been formally presented to her by any accusing party. This flatly violates her right to due process. Prof. Raymundo was never able to defend herself in writing nor had the chance to consult with a lawyer regarding the allegations raised against her.
3.	Prof. Walden Bello in his January 12, 2009 letter of support to Prof. Raymundo wrote that, \"The conflation of the tenure process with a disciplinary process - especially one that has not reached any conclusion on the guilt or innocence of the defendant - is wrong and constitutes a dangerous precedent that would destroy the academic objectivity that is central to the tenure process.\"

D.) CHANCELLOR CAO UPHELD SOCIOLOGY DEPARTMENT CHAIR RANDY DAVID’S QUESTIONABLE 2/3 DEPARTMENTAL RULE FOR TENURE:
1.	Prof. Randy David insisted that a so-called 2/3 rule be upheld in the second voting by the tenured faculty, which resulted in votes of 5 for, 4 against, 1 abstain, and 1 waiver of tenure. But this rule was not upheld in the first voting of which resulted in Prof. Raymundo’s favor (7 for, 3 against).
2.	The so-called rule was never raised in any previous voting or correspondence. It was only invoked by Prof. David in a meeting on June 16, 2009 with Chancellor Cao and VCAA Paredes.

E.) CHANCELLOR CAO DID NOT GIVE DUE ATTENTION TO ALL RELEVANT DOCUMENTS:
1.	Chancellor Cao did not cite Prof. Walden Bello’s letter of support affirming Prof. Raymundo’s academic excellence.
2.	The chancellor also misused a paragraph from Prof. Laura Samson’s letter, which he cited to highlight dissent in the department, even though Prof. Samson’s concluding statement actually favored Prof. Raymundo.

Chancellor Cao’s skewed, arbitrary, and unjust decision-making which is tantamount to abuse of authority has no place in a university that stands for academic freedom and service to the people. We call for the immediate reversal of Chancellor Cao’s decision to deny Prof. Raymundo’s tenure.

Thus, we reiterate our appeal to Pres. Roman and the BOR to grant Prof. Sarah Raymundo the tenure she truly deserves.

Eternal Earth - 22nd Dec. 2012

This is my message to people who believe that world is going to end on 21st Dec. 2012. You are entitled to your opinion but do not spread this topic as if you have full evidence of its happening.

What is going to happen in future is something that no body can tell. I come from very \"cultural\" country, India and I know that you can not predict anything about future. If I specifically speak of 2012, there are no hard evidence at all that it is going to happen. Like our holy books have been altered since centuries, what our ancestors said is also altered over time.

How many scientists has supported this media hype? If we are so sure of dying in 2012, why are we spending billions of dollars on sending man back to moon in 2020?

What Mayan predicted was for their very own civilization. it is basically an end date of Mayan calendar, the calendars in your home WILL STILL BE PRINTED for many more years to come. According to their astrology, their civilization was to end in 2012, but they are long gone before that.

We have hard time to explore the space even with the state of the art technology, how do you think Mayan predicted from Earth without even a telescope?

In 1987, astrologers predicted that California will be in the ocean, is it really in the ocean as I write this or it just came out of water?

As the most intelligent living being on earth and may be in universe, we have to understand that the earth is eternal. Partial destruction does and will happen as we have noticed it. 9/11, Tsunami, Katrina... It is end of the world for people who died in those disaster and will die in future disaster, but to believe that the earth is going END is a totally baseless statement. Science has never supported it, I do not support it and if you too don\'t support it, please sign this petition.

As the world won\'t end on 21st Dec. 2012, on 22nd Dec. you will realize huge difference between astrology and astronomy. And remember news media will show about \"doomsday\" repeatedly. And the same news channels will also say \"we are alive\" on 22nd Dec.

Appreciate your support.
Thanks.

A Letter to Fr. Marco

After multiple students having been hurt by Fr. Marco\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s actions, I created a petition to help the administration see our side of things. If you are a supporter of this cause, please sign your name!!!!

November 13, 2009
Dear Father Marco,

As you well know, every year the Walsh Jesuit community conducts the Magis Raffle in order to support the endowment fund for those families in need of financial aid. This endeavor is fueled by the hard work and dedication of countless students, and for this we should be proud. However, for those of whom do not sell their tickets for various reasons, it is both extremely wrongful and unjustifiable to be inflicted with punishment. For whatever reason that these students chose not to sell their tickets, they should be respected for their decision. To inflict harsh criticism on these students is to disregard all the qualities of “men and women for others” that Walsh Jesuit seeks to impress upon its students.
Selling raffle tickets in order to provide aid for students is a choice that many make in order to help their fellow friends and classmates. However, this endeavor is just that: a choice. Therefore, there is nothing wrong with choosing not to participate in this voluntary activity. Too often the assumption is made that those who do not sell are simply lazy and entirely lack a sense of care for their school. However, I know firsthand that many students were unable to sell their raffle tickets for legitimate financial reasons or extenuating circumstances. Therefore, even thinking of disrespecting the decision of these students is not only unethical, but also extremely irrational. If those who do not choose to participate are going to be subject to discrimination, then proper measures should be taken to change the school handbook and make selling tickets a mandatory practice.
One of the main values that the Walsh Jesuit community strives for is unity among all of its members. However, singling out those who made their free-will choice not to sell tickets is a complete disgrace to the entire mission that Walsh Jesuit seeks to convey. Those of whom did not sell tickets have, without a doubt, contributed to the school community in some alternate way, whether it be through academics, contributions to the performing arts and athletic activities, or participation in one of the numerous clubs that Walsh Jesuit offers. These students have also supported their school through fundraisers and involvement in religious retreats and service projects. Therefore, they are no less a part of the valued Walsh Jesuit community than the other eight hundred students.
It is truly a shame that the cost of $120 worth of raffle tickets was worth completely humiliating and degrading a student. This Magis raffle was created in order to affect the school in a positive way, rather than becoming the source of blackmail through extortion. We need to focus on the good that has resulted from the raffle: the $101,000 that was raised, which undoubtedly will provide aid for those who otherwise would be unable to attend Walsh Jesuit. Our responsibility as true Warriors is to accept the students who did not sell tickets for the Magis raffle and demonstrate courtesy toward their own personal decision. Because, after all, these students are our own friends and classmates, and to us, they are not nor will they ever be viewed as an embarrassment.

Sincerely,
The Undersigned:

Specialty Clerkship are Special

There has been a recent change in the scoring system for residency at RMS (Ho Sin Hang) while most of us in specialty clerkships remain uninformed. Under the previous scoring system, marks allocated to junior, senior, specialty and post-specialty clerks are 0, 0, 10, 15 respectively, while under the new system, M12 = 5, M11= 10, and M10 remain at 15. We do not know who initiated the change but this new system will reduce the chance of successful application of some of our specialty clerk for the critical study period for the final MB.

We thereby demand the following actions to be taken in due course:

(1) To release information on
       i. Who initiated the change in the scoring system
ii. When was the change implemented
iii. What is the reason behind the change in scoring system

(2) Explain the absence of consultation period. Most of us have not been informed by any means (email, pamphlet or letter) and our opinions have not been reflected.

(3) Reassess the need for a change in the scoring system and emphasize our need as specialty clerks during this critical study period.

(4) Withhold the approval and release of the latest application until opinions from our class are heard.

(5) Review the transparency of residence application and influence of hall society on hall administration.

We understand our request might cause a delay in residence application process, however we do believe our voices had been omitted while there are significant consequence to our placement for our last semester. We hope that our concerns will be properly addressed and better communications with the hall administration can be achieved as soon as possible.

Allow Music Players in Studyhalls

In the Riverview High School handbook it implies that we are not allowed to use any type of music player at anytime of the school day. Some students that have study halls can not focus on the work that they are doing because they feel the need to listen to music. Either the study hall is too loud or they are having trouble focusing with others in the room. In our opinion we, the students of Riverview Jr/Sr High School believe that we should be allowed to use our music players during study halls. Its not like we are sitting in a legit class listening to them over the teachers voice. Study halls are our given time to catch up on work or relax quietly. Therefore, we should have the privilege to use our music players during our study halls. It is not like we are interrupting another unless our music is that loud, and if it is all you would have to do is ask us to turn it down. We the students of Riverview have all signed this in agreement that you should let us use music players in study halls because that is our time during the school day.

Say NO to Kaplan\'s new dress code

To: Kaplan College Board of Directors

November 2009

We the undersigned students of Kaplan College have come together before you to request that the administration of Kaplan College take all the necessary action to abolish the new dress code. We request the following to remain as per our understanding of enrollment agreement:

Students may continue to wear the shirts and pants they wish
Perfume/Cologne continue to be permitted
Hats continue be worn as desired by student

We understand that, by enforcing a dress code, the teachers and staff of Kaplan College only wish to promote an atmosphere that is conducive to learning. However, we the undersigned believe that the rules have become too strict. We signed our enrollment agreements with Kaplan College with the understanding that we have the freedom to be fully self-expressed. We believe students should not be dictated to wear a uniform against their will with the repercussion of punishment for not abiding by the new dress code. Furthermore, for many of us this is an unwelcome inconvenience, as we work before attending class. The dress code is unnecessarily strict and the discipline related to said code is unwarranted and unwanted. We request the new code be abolished.

By signing and submitting this petition, no disrespect is intended to the Kaplan College administration. As paying students, we adamantly request that our freedom to be fully self-expressed stay intact at Kaplan College.

We, the undersigned, call upon the Kaplan College Board of Directors to review and revise this new code soon as possible.

Regards,

The Undersigned
